Wow, I glanced over the headline and thought I had read that Google was partnering with NASCAR. The vision of Jeff Gorgon with a Google logo next to the Pepsi/Coke/Pringles/Jiffy Lube/Dupont/Kwiki Mart/Kroger/Wal Mart/Coppertone/Bosch logos.
This is very different because while Google is top in search, other search companies make money and are easily accessed. In order to use Yahoo! search, simply plug in yahoo.com into your browser. In order to use an operating system other than Windows on your PC, it's a bit more difficult, not to mention that Microsoft is trying to use its leverage as a Monopoloy to bring more people to their search technology.
What about all of our enterprise apps that are running on mono? As long as my huge company that relies upon those apps 24/7 can still get the support they need, let the world move along as it wishes!
Dang I used to just love SUSE Linux. Their documentation was simply the best. Now their wrapped up with Novell, Microsoft...must ponder this change.
Ughhh, so you're touting a model-view-controller type of Web development framework and yet you need a tutorial from Yahoo in order to tie into neutral services?
I disagree. The Fedora project is well supported and has been promoted by Red Hat corporate in a big way. Some may prefer other distros, but Red Hat hasn't dropped the ball, in my opinion. Also, while you might prefer Ubuntu, you sound as if you set up your own machines at work; this means you would not be a Red Hat customer anyway.
Lastly, there currently is very little money in the Linux desktop market. Red Hat is involved in the enterprise not because it's a short term solution, but because that's where there is 'real' money that allows a company to, well, be a company.
If desktop preference drove server preference, wouldn't everyone be using OS X Server?
Does Google primarily use Red Hat linux on their servers, or do they have their own modified version of Linux or BSD or some other OS? I've read some articles about their server software, but I haven't seen much up to date info.
Well, there were fewer viruses for the Mac until this article was posted on Slashdot. After the article, every virus writer in the world that was offended by those filthy rich, OS X techno-elitists decided to hunker down and create the ultimate bruisedEgo trojan, demonstrating once and for all who is better, although no one and no thing is actually better than anything else, of course.
So how would this ultimate virus wreak havok amongst the Starbucks sipping, secure shell using, Photoshop editing, iTunes listening crowd?
Oracle wants to buy contracts, not an OS. Otherwise they would simply role their own. If they were to purchase a company like Novell, they would get the existing business as well as the ability to work with the SuSE OS.
You are correct, but has the goal ever been to make Fedora enterprise ready without any experimental inclusions? I don't think so. Also, Red Hat makes most of their $ from service anyway, so direct comparisons between Red Hat the service company versus Debian a distro company are a bit out of line. Red Hat does have a distro, of course, but they are a corporation that is more into "solutions".

I'm not bashing you, but do you honestly feel that Windows is geared towards technical people and OS X is not? You mentioned Linux...OS X does come out of the box with a nice shell, Java, Perl...I think OS X offers much more to the techie than Windows.
And why is it a hit piece, according to your post? Is it a hit piece because this decision was driven, primarily, by those in the Republican party? If you consider this to be a hit piece, then I would certainly suggest that you write your representatives no matter what party you wish to defend.
Some of the most difficult to use Web sites that exist are sites that look stunning. This has been the case ever since the Web garnered attention from graphical designers and advertisers.
This is nothing new, and good Web designers recognize this.
On a side note, it is often the case that advertisers can sell an idea that looks good to the client, but that same look might do nothing to attract customers.
Sheeesh, is the press without the means to actually spend 5 minutes of research on anything at all? I am so sick of that fact that the press is great at yelling at one another, but obviously piss poor at performing the most basic research.
No kidding. Symantec would love their user base to expand, especially since MS is selling anti-virus software. It is legit to promote awareness of possible OS X exploits, but it ridiculous to rely upon any information from a company such as Symantec - they have a vested interest in scaring the hell out of people that don't know any better.
I'm sorry, but virtual beer just doesn't take the place of a few cold ones on the golf course. I believe this to be the biggest hurdle for this concept (-:

Dude, no need to be THAT cool!
If you are reading about Nerdcore Documentaries on Slashdot, then suspect no longer, you rival all of your friends in the world of geekdom.
Alas, I honestly feel the need to go out and do something 'cool' now that doesn't involve computers, WoW, etc.
At what point has MacOS, OSX, and/or Linux made up any significant desktop market share compared to Windows?

The Linux Link Tech Show Episode 157 contains an entertaining interview with the author.

Last I checked M$ had a bit more money than Oracle. So based upon your logic, should M$ not dominate the DB industry?

Why don't you write a Rails/Yahoo API tutorial?

Thanks!
I just wanted to add that I thank everyone on this board for working with these two pieces of software so I don't have to!

Would it make more sense to invest money into supporting server load that is probably going to happen one time?

The professor should provide the notes to the class and ask the students to simply pay attention and become engaged.

My guess is that they are tinkering with a distro for a Web tablet, a 'next great thing' that hasn't really caught on fire as of yet.
Ughhh, to hear the words 'Ubuntu' AND 'blog' all day long makes my skin crawl.
