First, the standard package format is RPM. IMO debian can still compily with this standard even though they use deb. Hows this. It is because they have alien. Even then it is not hard for compains to use both package format.

For the second on I think this is a load of crap. Why does LSB need to decied on KDE or GNOME. Most distros have both also most programs run on both desktops. What does need to be done is form KDE and GNOME to use the same sound system (which they will be as AFAIK), the same process communication (I read some where that the KDE team are looking a COBRA again). Thats it the LSB should not tell me what my linux system looks like. They are just there to make sure that software that uses the standard will run the same on distros that compily with the standard.

BTW just becasue that are releasing a new kernel every couple of weeks doesn't mean the bussiness need to keep taking their computers down to upgrade. They only need to upgrade if there is a bug that affects them in the kernel that they are using and the new one has a fix for it. Or if there is a realy brand spanking new feautre that they can't be with out. Other than that the is no reason.

They people who will upgrade every release are developers, proformance freaks, and people that want to be helpful by providing bug reports.
