I looked into this with roadrunner so I could get my cable modem billed directly to my company since they wanted to pay for it. It was like $100 or something. I asked the rep why it costs so much, what do I get for the almost double price? She said that business users will usually use the connection more so they charge more. Thats it. Uhhh...isn't it advertised as "Always on?" I know I keep my computers always connected and keep at least instant messenger clients running. So we said forget it. My company just cuts me a check every quarter to cover my cable modem expense and I kept my residential service.
I can't believe how much whining is going on. They call it a teaser for a reason! What did you expect? A download showing the entire plot, introducing all the new characters and some behind the scenes footage? It wasn't called the Star Wars 2 Teaser Collectors Edition! Some of you people really need to get out more.
"I suspect a fair number of people never try Linux or one of the BSDs because they're moderately happy with AOL as an ISP, and switching OSes would mean switching ISPs at the same time."
Oh yeah, thats it exactly, you hit it right on the head. I choose my OS by what ISP I have...bingo. I'm so glad slashdot folks are so damn smart.
You don't have to wait for a medic and then wait for the timer to run out. Just hit your jump key and you'll pop into limbo right away. Most of the time it will only be a 10-15 second total timeout period. You can also change your class when in limbo. If you are in a follow person mode hit 'm' (it says right on the screen what to do!). Then pick what you want. Usually as Allies I start as an engineer and high tail it to one of the blast walls. Set my detonator then if I die I come back as a soldier and go guard the bomb till it pops. If I hear a lot of people dieing while in limbo I flip over to medic and pop in as one of that. Its actually very easy, just read the screen.
I've only got a 800Mhz P3 with a Geforce 2 running W98 with 256MB ram and it played wicked fast at 1024x768. I was playing on a 10 vs 10 map and had no problems at all. I even had outlook and MSN Messenger running in the background.
So I don't know what junk you got running along with it but no problems on my machine.
wrong. Its not a G4 in the gamecube. The g4 was originally motorola (ya know...velocity engine and all that stuff). IBM wanted to concentrate more on getting the Mhz up on the powerpc chips and motorola wanted to throw more features in. That split the group apart. Now IBM is taking on some of the fab for motorola since their engineers are incompentant. The powerpc chip in the gamecube is an extension on the powerpc family, but it is NOT a G4.
Yeah and no one has a claim to international air space on the earth either, but the air traffic control still needs to know where everyone is at at all times. I'd hate to see a private space station ram into the ISS and destroy both of them just because the private one didn't tell NASA they were going to be there.

1: They overcharge their customers for what is otherwise standard equipment that you can get for half the price on the PC side.
You Get what you pay for. Apple hardware is high quality. Not some cheap OEM crap that Dell spits out.
2: Just a few weeks ago Apple released a firmware upgraded that disallowed the use of a large number of 3rd party RAM sticks. Could this be because Apple isn't making any money selling 128 megs of ram for $ 256.00? (Check the RAM Upgrade prices at the Apple Store)
The 3rd party memory that now doesn't work under the latest firmware was memory that did not match the specs that the machines should have had in the first place. There is still plenty of 3rd party modules that did work. Those people that got bit by this were the ones who went for the el cheapo sticks.
4: Or maybe how they claim PowerPC processors kick the crap out of x86 processors. Remember how they used to say the G4/450 was double the speed of a Pentium III/450? Somebody explain to me how a G4/733 (with an extended pipeline as the P4 has) can be double the speed of Pentium 4 1.5 ghz if that was the case. Do the math people....
Yes please do the math. There is more to the processor than just the Mhz ratings! A 733Mhz G4 will beat a 1.5Ghz P4 in some tests (just like the P4 will beat the G4 for in other specs).
5: And now this..... did you honestly expect anything different? As far as Apple and Open Source are concerned - its simply a take and take relationship. They have shown many times that they are completely unwilling donate something to the Open Source community (and dont mention Darwin until you actually try and use it) and this action does nothing but strengthen that resolve in my eyes.
Apple is a company. Heaven forbid they would want to make money and defend themselves...oh my, can't have that. Open source this...open source that. Screw open source! Just give me quality software and I'll pay for it.

Dreamcast does not have WindowsCE running it. It is a Sega OS that is on the disks. The Dreamcast will support WindowsCE if the game disk uses it, but very very few did.

Wired's article sucked. These sites all keep spewing out the same stuff on polygons per frame, colors, memory bandwidth and then comparing it to a single object in a movie. Even comparing it to 4 objects is not valid. I will be very surprised if the hardware in the xbox can apply all the special effects to high quality models at a high framerate all at once.
Creating 1 dino is no big deal when thats all your doing (no background, no sound needing to be processed, no AI and interaction with the player). Throw that 1 dino in with a fully rendered background, all kinds of special effects and make it be interactive, in other words make it a game, not a screenshot. Like typical microsoft stuff I bet it turns out to be more PR than substance.
The ISS was not sent up there to cater to the whims of rich folk. What about the real astronauts that are on in the queue to go up? Is it fair to them to be possibly bumbed because someone has paid a huge amount of money?
The reason this is important is probably a lot of folks like to listen to certain teams that are not the home team in the area they live. Those games do not get broadcast in their area.
This is a great idea...always has been, but there is NO easy solution to any of the problems that are being brought up.
- Security...who as access to what? As soon as you limit access to a record to a certain doctor, chances are that that doctor will NEED to see that record, but won't have access.
- People keep saying they want access to "their" records. Folks the medical records that have your names on them do not belong to you. They legally belong to the hospital where they reside. You cannot just walk into the records department and take your records. You can ask for a copy, but you can't take the original record.
- Wireless is a bad idea, if anything is going to be networked it better be wired.
- PDA's are a bad idea. Doctors are notorious for losing things. What happens when they lose their palm device that just happens to have 100 patient's records on them? Can you say lawsuit?
- What about HIPPA requirements? Jacao (sp?) audits? All of this stuff HAS to follow their rules or else its goodbye practice.
- Computers in all the rooms could be a bad idea. Too easy for little Johnny to get into the computer. Doctors don't like to log off things like this. They log in and then walk away. So you say fine...just keep track of who does what? Doctors also hate to remember their own passwords and login names so they will all find whoever has the shortest one and they will all use his.
We have been working with hospitals to figure out this security stuff...currently we have database level group security (certain groups of users have access to certain databases of data). Next up is document level security, but that is even more difficult. Some of you wondered why hospitals don't take more advantage of the latest technology? The reason is cost. The majority of these hospitals have NO money at all.
