So you want to be calling the contractors every time a new company wants to SFTP files to you? Every time you need to allow yet another protocol out from the exec vlan?

Well, my post was kind of tongue-in-cheek but to answer your question: no. You configure the network with your needs and specifications in mind. There aren't that many surprises: you know you need to transfer files a certain way, you know you have a webserver, you use Gmail, etc etc. Include a VPN in the specs for vendor remote access. Set up a contract that allows for a 6 month post-project free maintenance to handle bugs and forgotten instances of things.

Cant be more than $10,000? I have single switches worth 6x that.

When I said $10,000 that was clearly tongue in cheek. As in the PHB saying, "Do whatever it takes to get this up and running! Hear me? Whatever it takes. As long as you can do it for free."

    1) Why does the network need rebuilding?

A fair question but likely for the normal reason -- it wasn't built right in the first place. Probably grew like a fungus instead of being laid like good plumbing (with a nod to the late Senator Stevens).

    2) Where the hell are they getting an unlimited budget from?

Unlimited probably means they have no idea how much anything costs but it can't possibly be more than $10,000.

    3) Why, if they have money, would they hire somebody who never did any admin work?

Because then they'd have two $80,000 employees on staff when they can only afford one (see definition of "unlimited budget" above).

My company? I'd contract it out. It would probably still cost me an arm and a leg, but my programmer would still be doing his job and I wouldn't need to pay the contract company for more than a few months and maintenance visits thereafter.

I'd say the issue is the thinking that if it's written down, I don't need to learn it. I can always refer to it later. Even more so with Smartphones and the Internet.

Knowing things helps you solve problems, create new things, etc. If people say, "If I need to know it, I'll just look it up" it may not be too far away that we don't know what to look up because we can't even make the basic connections between subjects.

Yes indeed. CMSes in general are non-trivial for administrators, and hopefully easy for content updaters. We've used Plone, Drupal, Wordpress -- they aren't "install and go" applications by any means, and that goes double for a highly available environment. For Plone I highly recommend the Bootcamps they put on. Just trying to read the online documentation available will just get you into the forums asking smart questions and getting smarter answers which you can't understand.

  17. Re:Nether kinda on Ask Slashdot: Are You Streaming-Only For Home Entertainment? · · Score: 1

Old and poor argument. Items have value, a cost established by the majority. Music and movies, which can now be copied, still have value, and considerably less value than if there was only one of them. If the only way you could hear a particular song was to go see the person singing it, you'd end up paying quite a bit more than any arena concert costs. Someone is nice enough to make a high quality recording, ship it to a store near you, and market it well enough that you hear about it. All that increases the value of the song.

I understand that the ease of copying digital media makes people think they shouldn't need to pay for it. And sure, you don't need to pay for something already out there. But if you don't, you're lowering the chance that anything similar will be produced later on. It's the same as really liking a book, then killing the author. At least you have the book you like, but there's no chance you'll see another from him.

I'm not saying everything is fair in music and movies. Not to the viewer nor the artist. I'd like to see that change too. But after thinking about it for a long time, I don't agree with copyright infringement. Maybe the money isn't going to the exact right place, maybe I should be able to watch something for free every once in awhile. But I shouldn't ignore what it takes to create the art.
