  1. Imaging vacation on Entry-Level Astronomy? · · Score: 1

The best way to get a taste for imaging is to take an imaging vacation, go to a place like www.nmskies.com and for a very reasonable price you get to use a $50,000 imaging setup with help from people that do this for a living. You can take your own telescope as well or rent one of theirs for viewing in amazing dark skies. One night of imaging here I got more/better images than in the entire previous year on my own. It makes you lust after nice equipment, but you learn a lot. They also have an option where you can rent time and control a scope remotely if you don't have time for a vacation.

  2. Re:New math? on Vermont Launches 'Cow Power' System · · Score: 1

As someone who grew up on a small family dairy farm (60-80 cows in the milking rotation at a time) I can say that these "crazy milk subsidies" do not benefit all farms equally, like other farm subsidies they can bring in millions for large operations that work loopholes, but for a small farm don't amount to much. When my parents finally got out of the dairy business, the price they got for milk was not much more than 25 years ago when they first started. Most of the money goes to the middle man. At least I remember my father saying that out of a gallon of milk, we only saw about $ .30- $ .50

The correct terminology for this is superalphonic(sp?) There is a similar phenomena with solar wind and the earth's atmosphere, a bow shock is created, much like a rock in a stream. The solar wind is superaphonic in the reference frame of the earth. Very interesting stuff. http://www-istp.gsfc.nasa.gov/istp/outreach/ has some good info.

My Dad's 1970 Honda CB250 states in the manual that it should get around 100mpg at 35mph, not exactly cruising speed, but still pretty impressive. I currently am rebuilding a 79 Suzuki gs850, before the rebuild fully loaded for touring I could still get close to 40mpg if I didn't push too hard. I never felt like riding the tank dry either, a 5.8gal tank will go a ways!

  5. comfort reasons on EPA Fuel Economy Myth: Too High, Too Low? · · Score: 1

For 7 years I drove an 86 Honda Accord, when I traded it in it had 207,000 miles on it and the last tank of gas I got 30.5 mpg. I now own a 98 Honda CR-V and love it, no the mileage isn't as good (mid 20's) but for the first time in my life I actually fit in my car (6'4" 220lbs). In my Accord my knees were forced to the side so that the steering wheel would fit. I can now get in and out of my car without contorting my body. Also when I traded it in the muffler was in the trunk, this was the 4th time it had rusted through, so even though my mpg is worse in the CR-V I am guessing it is better in the emmisions dept. than my Accord ever was! So I used to be anti SUV and I never considered any of the big ones, but for me comfort finally won over fuel economy.

I grew up on a dairy farm, my parents got out of it a couple years ago because
    A. absolutely no free time (milk 2x a day everyday, not many people around have enough experience to fill in and those that do usually don't want to on Christmas, etc.)

    B. Milk price the farmer gets wasn't any better than 20 years ago.

Now most small dairy farms can't make it, only the large ones with thousands of cows can do it.

  8. Snood Station on Snood, the Simple Game · · Score: 1

On my hall we have a small room that used to be the hall phone booth before everyone got phones in their room. We set up an old Mac with Snood on it and it is a great stress reliever and invariably results in a large number of people hanging out in the hall, talking or just watching the game. So I would argue that used properly, Snood and games like it can be great community builders.

If you don't want to shell out big bucks, you can pick up some excerpts of these lectures for about $15, they are called "Six Easy Pieces" and "Six Not So Easy Pieces". They are short books that have some very good basic material. The easy pieces has little or no math in it and the not so easy has more math, but it is still presented in a very understandable way. Also, Relativity: The Special and General Theory by A. Einstein is very easy to read and understand.
