.. and what if DOOM3/UT2003 is 75% of all software that you run?

Then you have more throw-away money than the original poster... and that seems like a heck of a lot of dough to spend just to play a few computer games. Why not just get a videogame system? It's more economical, that's for sure. You can't dispute that.

Although this advice is primarily geared toward students in Computer Science, there are two things I can recommend to you:

    1) Do Co-op if your College/University has it. Get any kind of experience you can because right now, there just doesn't seem to be any jobs for grads with no experience. Things may change in the future but having some experience is always better than having none.

    2) Network, Network, Network! Make contacts. Keep in touch with your employers after your co-op terms. Get to know your professors. From what I've seen up here north of the border, it's more important "who" you know rather than "what" you know.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Ok, I hear Mozilla kicks ass in this department, but what about a solution for IE? Some people are saying disable javascript. Does that mean disabling the just-in-time compiler under advanced options? If anyone uses a third-party program for dealing with pop-ups in IE I'd love to hear your suggestions.

  6. Re:Lots of people complain about this.... on Traffic Shaping on DSL? · · Score: 1

An 8KB TCP window is 80k bits, so even if you're getting your whole 128kbps upstream, that's over half a second of data that could be sitting ahead of your ACK, dogging your downstream flow rate. It's especially bad if your upstream traffic has a big window size, while your downstream is using slowstart and has never gotten a very big window.
If I'm not mistaken, this can be correct by adjusting the Recieve Window on a Windows machine, which defines the size of the recieving computer's packet buffer. You can find out how to adjust that here.

An 8K buffer is too tiny for a highspeed connection. If a packet is lost or corrupted, the reciever has to notify the sender of this and in the mean time, buffering the incoming packets until the replacement packet arrives. Of course, I don't have my 4th year comp sci network book in front of me, so I could be off a bit (or a lot) here.

An extremely large recieve window (buffer) is not great for performance either. Does anyone know why that is the case? I think the same principle applies but I'm not sure.

I always had a hard time finding these on the Sybase site, so I thought I would throw them up on my webspace for this post. I used these for my University Databases course and they were golden. They're not great for learning SQL from scratch, but they're an excellent reference for those tricky queries or table manipulations you might run into. I still use them occasionally for non-sybase DBMSs as well. I hope you find them as useful as I did.

  11. Bell Intrigna and the Province of Manitoba on Publicly Funded Broadband and 802.11 · · Score: 2, Informative

You have to hand it to Intrigna. They beat out Alberta's own telco (Telus) to get this contract, which to me is quite a feat. Intrigna jointly owned by BCE and Manitoba Telecom Services. MTS (majority holder) currently has a bunch of communities (from large to extremely small) in it's own province wired for dsl, part of its own 300 million dollar initiative to wire the province for highspeed internet.

Wondering how much we pay for dsl? Try 19.95 for the first 6 months (~1.2Mbps down, 256kbps up) then the price is 39.95 each month after that. Free install and startup kit included, of course. How about them apples. :)

The use of the word "cities" is a little strong in the article... I'd imagine some of the communities have less than 100 people.

  12. Declaration form on Cooperation in CS Education? · · Score: 1

At my University, all comp sci students are required to print out and sign the following form for every assignment we do, except a few classes that do require teams. It's been in effect for the 3rd year now:

    Software Engineering I (3rd yr)
    Software Engineering II (4th yr)
    Database Implementation II (4th yr)

My plan was to take all 3, but S.E. I was such a horrible experience for me I declined to take the others. Our team bickered and had disagreements right until the end, and we weren't the only group. It would've been nice to have a course earlier in the curriculum that taught us how to work as a team. It may sound stupid to some of you, but I can tell you that my group sure could've used it.

Was this maybe more of a move to mask Nintendo's launch of the Gamecube? Originally, it was Nintendo that had the 3 day cushion. In my eyes (looking from north of the boarder), I see Nintendo's launch being less of a bang then what would have been with the original dates. It's getting out advertised up here by 2 to 1 easy.

Hmmm... according to the LA times article, if Nintendo is "locked and loaded" with their consoles, would they release on their original date of Nov. 5? That's a 10 day buffer to sell a ton of $440CD (2 game bundle) systems, and watch Microsoft wait and wallow with their $600CD (2 game bundle) systems.

I see an enormous difference. The rating system on Slashdot is meant to benefit the reader, not the writer. I can load a discussion, filter out the crap (crap = 2 or less, IMO) and read the good stuff. What I get in the end is a very informative, interesting debate on a topic that comes out of the blue. I can't get this reading a newspaper, or even a site like salon.com.

On the other hand, HotorNot voting would appeal to the writer of the vote. You see something you like...10. Ugly girl...2. Your vote counts for nothing more than immediate satisfaction. So what if you see the overall rating. How does that benefit you as a reader?

Unlike Slashdot, there's no other purpose.
