  1. here's the bottom line on What's A Good Starter Linux distro? · · Score: 1

Whatever you start with is probably what you are going to end up liking and using. I have been using redhat, although I have tried out slackware, debian, and suse. I came back to redhat because I started on it, was familiar with their tools, and well it's just plain easier for me. I can only think one distro would be better than another if you experiment. Alot of people suggest mandrake, well I am recommending redhat, which most people probably don't agree with. I figure it comes with standard packages that you will find in all distros (minus gcc 2.9.6) which are probably going to have bugs now and again. Plus redhat disables everything but SSH now, so the complaints about everything being "wide open" on install now shouldn't be a problem anymore.

I am all for decss in it's legal uses (dvd playback in linux) but I do believe the first step in ripping a dvd into divx is passing the vob through decss. I think the MPAA is less worried about you burning bit for bit copies (which I don't think you could copy the key region of a dvd anyway) but rather some d00d ripping the movie into downloadable chunks for all to grab.. I see what they are worried about. Would it be so hard to have a closed library (published by the mpaa) that does vob decoding and regular GNU software for the playback?

you bought the disc itself. I think it's rather arrogant to assume that every artist (used subjectively) would want you to redistribute their work. That's why it shouldn't matter in what medium you listen to music that you have licensed from the seller as long as you don't give it to someone else who did not pay for the license. Furthermore, as is easily demonstrated among this crowd. Just because the majority (court) says-so doesn't make it so.

obviously you never seen or wrote ibmtr_cs. It will lock up your machine faster than hell because linux can't determine what interrupts are being used by hardware on a thinkpad. I've never had windows 98, NT, or 2000 lockup due to a bug that wasn't noted and had a patch for or due to some company mucking up the install shield that left bogus dlls, vxd, and registry keys lying around. My point is all OSes are vulnerable to this and it's laziness on developers parts.

by far is the fact that napster will not be distributing mp3's that you can do what you want with. You will not be burning cd's with any music you get from napster. It sounds like a pay per play kind of basis which is no good for anyone but the record companies. Make sure to check out www.emusic.com for real mp3's where the artists get compensated directly. Here is an excerpt from http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/so/20010606/en/napste r_strikes_deal_with_three_major_labels_1.html

Napster plans to license the music through MusicNet, the joint venture formed by the three labels in April in order to make their music available online (see). When the subscription service launches, users who pay Napster's regular subscription fee -- previously estimated at $4.95 a month -- will not get access to major-label content and will be limited to trading indie-label music, CEO Hank Barry said in a press conference Tuesday evening (June 5). In order to get MusicNet content -- which will apparently be available only from MusicNet's centralized servers, not through Napster's traditional file-sharing methods -- users will have to pay an additional monthly fee. That fee is expected to be around the cost of a single CD, MusicNet CEO Rob Glaser said. MusicNet will provide both streaming and downloadable music, but only in a yet-to-be-specified secure format, not as MP3s.
