    geez, just because they are out to get you doesn't make you paranoid. I see this as plain and simple. MS makes an easier to use product that's part of the install base. While it *seems* as though this is MS's fault, it's really a case of apathy on the part of the user. When I had a 56k modem, i found ways of getting the software if I really wanted it. Maybe these people really just don't want add on software. Be it by design or accidental, MS software on MS OSes are less error prone.

    Try installing junk shareware on it, uninstalling it and see if it blows up. Difference is poorly written code and problems don't down a linux machine *as easily* as a windows box.

    Yeah, but if you do it from Tux Games, loki isn't getting all the cash. Tux has some overhead and loki has sold it to them for less than $46. Given that loki is in chapter 11, I've paid them directly.

    perhaps you haven't notice the pure hatred Hans has for redhat. Ever opportunity he gets he criticizes redhat's choice for GCC (which is undefendable as far as 7.0 is concerned) and seems to be at war with Alan Cox. I'd hardly call it friendly.

    The part that just kills me is this

    The maker of Windows and other software also has stepped up campaign donations, becoming the fifth-largest soft-money donor to the national Republican and Democratic parties in 1999-2000, and it has hired a slew of well-connected lobbying firms.

    These letters contained this information.This is all out bribery at this point...and not even close to subtle.

    I have an athlon 1200 and while they require a substantial heatsync/fan, it's not noisy. My case has no other fans in it and my processor (under load) averages around 50 degrees C. This is, according to AMD, well within it's tolerant range. Alot of people will definitley argue the cooler the better. That may be. The point is it doesn't have to run at 35 degrees to be running properly. I find the loudest thing in my machine are the scsi hard drives.

    When you think about it, people are behind these corperations and they are screwing themseleves as well as us. I just don't understand why these people keep passing tougher and tougher laws. I suppose they must not obey them. This is all obvious I imagine, but it's a slow day. :)

    We are currently developing WarCraft III for the PC and Macintosh and have no plans for versions on other operating systems.


    We need to put pressure on blizzard for some linux releases. Not that it was a suprise.

    The story went into no details on what he did besides click 'edit' to compromise the site? It didn't actually state what he was formally charged with other than mentioning 'wire fraud' which could have a wide varying set of meanings. As part of being in this community I think it's up to us to dig and find more information before making rash decisions. After all, aren't we criticizing the FBI for their, apparent, rash decisions?

    and licensing their technology. IBM has more patents every year than any other company. If I am not mistaken, the PS2 architecture was ahead of it's time by having devices speak directly to the processor and memory speeding things up. I also believe IBM opened the PC spec up to put down the monopoly abuse cries from their trials. If memory serves, IBM put alot of companies in business.

    How much bad publicity is it for a company when they dare you to break their copy protection then threaten a university when it was accomplished and they wanted to publish their findings. This is just typical CYA because I believe that these companies that have pushed for the DMCA know that is in a dangerous state and might get repealed. They want to hold on as long as possible to it and use it for the right fight. It just saddens me that our government "for the people and by the people" has been substituted with "for the corperations and by the corperations"

    Be has been marketing itself to the internet appliance market for sometime now. Perhaps Palm feels it needs to upgrade it's user interface to keep up with WINCE. Not to start a war, but the palm interface is crude and not very attractive. I can't figure out why it has taken them so long to support colors on the interface.

    You are correct, she is suing the company for discrimination on federal laws. Those laws determine if she was disabled, therfore, discriminated against.

    We basically have the defense attorney's side of the story. The story basically suggests that she became too much of a burden on the company (cost wise) and they fired her. What happens if the other side of the story is she came in 2 hours late, took a 3 hour lunch and left at 3:00 in the afternoon while hanging out at the coffee machine most of the day? I know it's a gross exaggeration, but where is the company's side? I posted earlier that I supported disability for this kind of issue, but I think there must be something more going on behind the scenes in this issue that we have not been told.

    When someone files for disability, they receive money from the federal government stating that they cannot work. Say some construction guy has been working on houses for 20 years and is finally to old and worn out (due to injuries) that he can no longer build houses or whatever. He files for disability to help him live. Well what happens when a 55 year old programmer has carpel tunnel or arthritis? I guess you should hope by the time you reach that age you can dictate your code to the computer. I think this is not as obvious as it first seems.

    why not hope GL1.3 exceeds DX8 to make it more attractive to developers. We needs these guys seeing GL as a standard they can count on. It's really a messed up situation when a proprietary API is deemed a "standard".

    Microsoft released the patch 2 weeks before the worm got serious.. In either case, it has been available the entire time. Where were the admins and users then? You can't blame apathy on MS.

    don't most UNIX admins need to know something about the OS other than the size of the install base therefore actually patching their security holes in a reasonable amount of time. Let's not forget the issue is NOT microsoft's security hole. All oses have that, it's that the userbase is not up to date on installing the security fixes. We just hope everyone who bashes MS will patch their own holes come unix worm time.

    that the government should get more involved with the cable industry. Where I live you can only get cable access for $60 with out another cable subscription. I think the market needs a little competition to drive that price down. That's where the government actually forces time warner to open it's cable networks to other ISPs. DSL is non-existent here for whatever reason, so AOL/Timewarner has a monopoly on this market. Personally, I think it stinks.

    I actually get better fps on linux playing tribes2 than on windows with the exact same settings. Dunno about other people's mileage though. Perhaps you should check evil3d's comparison of the latest nvidia drivers to window drivers over at http://www.evil3d.net/reviews/gfx/vtgf3/linux/ it does focus on the geforce3, but speaks for the driver across all geforce cards.

    Yeah, every linux user out there that refuses to purchase these games. I have personally bought every loki game (except heretic2). I think everyone in the community needs to rally around loki and buy up as many games as they can. If loki goes out of business, we can pretty much count on high quality ports to stop. If every person who reads /. could just go buy one game, I think we could actually make a difference.
