Why shut down 3 perfectly good reactors that supply much needed power to several million people because the one in the building next-door blew up because of the spectacular negligence of its operators? Seriously, the likelyhood that the conditions under which that disaster occurred are not very likely to be repeated. Fire the crew that was running reactor number 4 and get the rest of them some serious refresher training in safety procedures and have them write "I will not purposly operate the nuclear reactor outside of safe parameters" 1000 times on the blackboard, but decomissioning millions of dollars worth of servicable equipment with no suitable replacement available because a similar model failed under highly unusual circumstances was just not an option.
It probably isn't practical to replace these with modern designs, given the current state of the Russian economy, but less drastic steps, like maybe retrofitting these reactors with containment structures would be a good start. I guess what i really should have said was that the only reason Chernobyl was closed for good is its notoriety. There is nothing that makes it fundamentally different from the 14 other RBMK reactors still in operation, other than the fact that there was an accident there 14 years ago. In fact, safety modifications to the number 3 reactor at Chernobyl make the same type of failure that occurred in the number 4 reactor all but impossible. Indeed it was mainly spectacular disregard for safety procedures that made it possible in the first place. Considerable safety modifications have been made to the other RBMK reactors, but all of them still lack containment structures. What I was trying to say is that pressuring Ukraine to close Chernobyl may be doing more harm than good, taking attention away from a much bigger problem.
There are still 14 other reactors of the same design in operation at other powerplants around the former Soviet Union. I have not heard of any plans to shut these down. With Chernobyl being the most visible of these, it's closure will very likely take the heat off the others, and they will continue operating with almost no one giving it a second thought, until the next major failure.
Sometimes, i just put customers on hold, read slashdot for a few minutes, and come back using a different name/voice. Funny how much smarter I seem to them when they think its someone else.
None of the astronaut food that i've ever seen looks like it would be any good to ferment. you would have to save up alot of mushed peas before you could get a whole litre of alcohol. and where did they get the yeast? you would think it would have been easier to sneak a couple bottles onboard. and what kind of alcohol comes out of a still coloured yellow anyway. I wouldn't drink it. And even if the mission commander chose to look the other way, I doubt she would let the entire crew get 'faced at once. ^..^
you didn't notice the Toshiba and Intel stuff plastered all over the place? On their space suits even, Like they were NASCAR drivers instead of NASA astronauts. There were a few others too, but i don't remember them, I stopped paying attention after the (disappointing) shower scene. ^..^
The Matrix was a Kung Fu movie, with the sci fi angle thrown in to make it more interesting, and allow for better wardrobe and those cool cyberpunk sets. Kung Fu movies never have to make excuses. ^..^
The endless nods to 2001 really drove me nuts. Mysterious happenings on other planet, machines with human-sounding names (and AMEE even had a menacing glowing eye like HAL, or maybe that was meant to call Terminator to mind.)that go bonkers when threatened, and even the foreshadowing shots of the Danger: Vacuum door, that eventually saves Cmdr. Bowman's Life. Oh, and captain named Bowman. How much more heavy handed can you get than that? I was really expecting the computer to say "I'm sorry Kate, I'm afraid I can't do that" at some point. It all proves that the makers of this film know what a good movie making is, and just chose to ignore that knowledge. you can't just borrow plot devices from a great film, paste them together with others from Alien and Blair Witch Project, and end up with a good movie. Even Ms. Moss's shower scene cannot make up for such lameness.
P.S. Why do machines in movies all have glowing eyes? people who do movies have most likely seen alot of cameras before, and probably never one that emits light from the lense. It bugs me every time i see it.
If you are talking about the cross-shaped spikes of light that come from the brighter stars, those are actually diffraction effects caused by the secondary mirror holder in the telescope. the smaller secondary is held in place by a mount shape like a + and this causes the diffraction spikes. they don't show up on the fainter stars so well because they are, um, fainter. ^..^
That's right, our galaxy is currently in the process of merging with the Large Magellanic Cloud, an irregular dwarf galaxy visible in the southern hemisphere. ^..^
he port scanned it. that seems to constitute suspicious activity to me. that's like walking into a murder scene, poking around and then trying to explain to the cops that you were just curious. Of course they are going to quetion everyone who was behaving suspiciously in the vicinity of a crime scene.
Of course, Having the FBI investigate this is kind of silly too, I mean would they investigate grafitti on Yankee Stadium too?
With the news of severe weather, the Weather Channel is probably already making arrangements to fly Jim Cantore out there. Expect live reports sometime next week. ^..^
Finding a material that would be flexible enough at -188C for a space suit with flappable wings could present a problem. not to mentions a material that would insulate a person from these temperatures. ^..^
Flourinert has a much higher freezing point than the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. it will freeze in the heat exchanger.
Directly submersing it in liquid nitrogen probably won't work either. thermal shock would break things, kinda like putting hot glass in ice water. ^..^
During one REFORGER, we got two MRE per day. This was before the included the heaters, so not only could you not eat them, you couldn't play with them. nobody ate anything but the crackers and the coffee. cold corned beef hash and omlette with bacon pieces (cooked eggs were definitely not made for long term storage) are just not edible. Of course, 30 days with no food is a small price to pay for 30 days with no KP. Now if the would just add some amphetemine to these patches, 30 days with no sleep might not be so bad. ^..^
It seems to me that Coke is a regitered trademark, they use the phrase Coke is it in adverts. Maybe you can argue that since it isn't capitalized in your domain name, it doesn't infringe upon their trademark

It isn't just the UI that was copied, the Aqua them uses several apple logos in a variety of places. That is a clear trademark violation.
