    IIRC there was some provision like this for this which meant that expiring comic book characters were resurrected in order to prevent the owner losing copyright over the character.

    but copyright lasts forever. If you thought the tech companies and drug companies were bad, the extensions to copyright are worse. Patents expire in a relatively short time frame, but copyright just gets extended. But I don't make a living out of writing stories.

    2011 was a year where I heard the term x-killer less than usual. In the past the iPod-killer, the killer-app, etc. seemed to used every time something 'new' came out, and I was happy that the term didn't seem to show up as often.

    Nokia shifting to Windoze is my pick of the news. It will keep Nokia in the marketplace and it means that MS gets a foot in the door without a lot of development dollars being spent on hardware.

    The other memory 0f 2011 are the changes to the interfaces of MacOSX and Win8, both working more like an iPad but still retaining the old GUI under the facade. I'm including Win8 because of the Dev preview, which I count as a release (limited as it may be).

    It is also the year that I decided that computers are not interesting any more, having been doing this stuff since 1978, it has all become as exciting as a new toaster.

    smart cars lead to dumb drivers. On good roads people drive faster, not better. In smart cars people will drive thinking they are safer and will take more risks. As nice as the idea is, the people that this system targets should not be driving.

    I bet that they don't get to watch any Planet of the Apes video. Do video ratings apply to apes? (under 15s must be accompanied by their keeper) A devise so simple that an Ape can use it, meanwhile many DVD/VCR clocks still flash 12:00. Given that the iPads have cameras and video editing software, will we see a Youtube called The Ape Escape? 1000's are hungry in many parts of the world, and we find the money to fund iPads for apes, WTF?

    I pay the author their due, for the work they put into the app. If I don't see any value in it, I don't get it, free or otherwise. Buying apps via Apple or Google or boxed software from a retailer is always a gamble, but you can read comments before buying, or work out if it is worth less than a cup of coffee.

    the sizes make sense only if they are targeted at places that don't need a built-in tuner. This makes them universal, cheaper, and more likely to have more than one per household, as an addition to the big family TV. Big enough for the wall in a bedroom. They would be easier to carry out of the store, and transport costs would be lower, which keeps Apple$ margin higher. But it's still a rumour!

    after reading the intro, why have players at all? if you suggest that there is something WRONG with not having hi-tech in sport, then you may need to rethink the core point of the game, humans vs. humans, not wired vs. wired.

    I don't encrypt because I don't send anything that requires encryption. Having said that, My Wi-fi is encrypted to a reasonably high level, and if I really wanted to, my OS can encrypt messages and I can use encrypted webmail to send and receive email, so encryption is so commonly available, we don't use it, or we don't know that we are, e.g., Skype or SSL.

    It's a point of law and needs to be decided by a different part of the Legal framework. As laws are not global, I suggest that people need to temper their comments based on that. The issue seems to be based of what is Private and who can report or link stuff which may then make make them Public. I would say it's Facebook that is wrong, if it allows 'friends' to link Private photos into a Public area.

    My experience is that drives are getting worse and they just don't last like they used to. Getting 5 years out of a new drive, bought at my local Computer shop, would be great!, but not something that I expect.

    It's the cheapest major part in the whole unit. cynical me says that is just a token gesture by Samsung, and may be just part of a deal to stop Apple shopping elsewhere.

    I can understand an update if your device costs real money, but I don't expect they will upgrade a $100 (or less) device, it's not commercial sense. They do zero upgrades because it keeps the device cost-competitive.

    As a future buyer of a tablet, this is something I didn't consider, printing, I just took it for granted that you could print via an office LAN network.
