  1. Re:Doesn't Apple have the patent for TrueType font on Linspire Signs Patent Pact With MS · · Score: 1

IIRC Apple developed them as part of an Apple/MS deal to improve Fonts and Graphics, the Graphics format didn't surface. Sort of a way to not use postscript stuff.

No, it's not what the geeks of the world wanted, but you can't make everyone happy. You company can have one app that runs on the 'PC's and their phones, it isn't Quake 3 but it is more like what a business wants.

  8. sounds about right on Supreme Court Sides With Microsoft Over AT&T · · Score: 1

Unlike copyright, patents are only valid in the country that they are registered in. This would apply to MS patents also. They have copyright over the software which is almost global, but any patent would only apply is the countries in which the patent is registered. There may be agreements between countries, but if I patent something in Australia only, it could be built and used in the USA without asking me, but it could not be sold back into Australia.

just as he had to collect the devices required to play records (and there are a number of variations) tapes and CDs, he will have to collect the digital equivalent, WMP, iTunes etc. Big Deal! Formats have been changing since musicians first stated to record their music on velum. Licensing has been around on just about all forms of commercial music, sheet music, records, tapes, he just ignored it and didn't research his subject.

just as I can't use a CD on my record player o MP3 player, Apple's files are just a transport medium. You CAN buy this music from other places, go and do it. 13. what did people expect? on Apple Sues Over iPhone Smartphone Skins · · Score: 1

You have to defend a trademark to keep it, if you don't defend a trademark then you loose it. Apple is defending it's property, the stuff that it generates it's income from. Sueing bloggers for linking to the sites? is taking action against people who are helping to promote the material, so as bad as the situation may seem, Apple is within their rights to do what they did.

  14. lost the plot on iPhone Not Running OS X · · Score: 1

It's Apple's code they can compile it for another processor if they wish and they don't have to publish the source. Darwin has always been the under pinnings of Mac OSX and no-one has kept it a secret or implied anything else. To put MacOSX onto a mobile means being able to leave out a lot of desktop related material which would leave it small enough to run run on a handheld.

The original comments are badly researched by someone with no historical perspective on MacOSX/OPENSTEP/NeXTSTEP/BSD

If this is the best that two experts can come up with, MacOSX must be pretty good. Sure some of them would be nice to have, but having the date displayed makes it to the list? oh ffs! There is a good reason why you can't cut a file, there is the big risk of loosing it completely. I'd prefer a list written by new users, that would be more realistic than one written by two experts with years of exposure to PCs.

remembering that Macs and PCs have been around for 20+ years, it's not surprising that people have stuck with the machine or bought the machine that was easiest to use in the long run. And there is a PC culture that buys Macs for their parents for the same reason. I do tech support for a small company and the boss (60 yo) has a growing list of older people that end up with a Mac and he takes the time to support. It's a growing market that needs someone that is in the same age group and not some 'nerdy' guy/gal.
