American universities are just more free to make money from their R&D, unlike most say European ones. Since they can run research for profit they can also hire the best professors and researchers they can find and that creates a virtuous cycle. In Europe for example, most research schools are state institutions and thus professor salaries are set to a nationwide scale. Plus it's much harder to profit from R&D.
And don't forget the money-printing racket we call athletics. I'm as much of a college football and basketball fan as anyone, but don't forget how much money is generated from these programs for the university.

    Another major problem:

And it's very frustrating at how divided the different departments within the university are. No one wants to work with IT folks in other areas on campus, and the high-up campus-wide IT department seems to hold all us departmental IT folks in disdain for not doing "real" IT work. Everyone has their own cobbled-together and fragile legacy systems with their own data in their own formats. There doesn't seem to be much progress made, but committees are formed at every opportunity.

Agreed. When I go through periods of reading particular authors or genres, my writing tends to lean towards that style. Not by conscious effort, but simply because absorbing other people's words plays a large part in how I form my own thoughts onto paper.

Unfortunately, I don't see this being a success in today's classroom. If there's one thing I see students shy away from more than writing, it's reading. Unless they can subscribe to The OC Weekly or American Idol News and World Report, it might be a lost cause. Then again, I have more recent experience at the high school level than college, so maybe there it's a different story.

Jeezus I wish I could find hiring managers like you guys. I was searching for employment for 4 months before I finally landed a (relatively) low-paying gig this month doing SysAdmin at the University where I got my BS from.

Apparently no companies in my area actually do any hiring themselves anymore. Everything (and I mean abso-friggin-lutely everything) is channeled through these strict process-oriented headhunter organizations. A pox upon 'em all. Each and every one starts with an "interview" that I have to drive an hour to get to so I can sit down and let a high-school-diploma-holding suit-monkey talk at me and fill out his checklist so he can zip it over to his supervisor who will in turn get it right over to their "special contact" at Industry Leading Company, Inc.. Of course, they don't wanna tip their hand and actually tell you what or where this company is. Indeed, God intended for them to get their cut of this transaction.

"Do you have any foo experience?" (Not that he's got a clue what foo means or whether or not bar, baz, bif, or bop might be relevant to the question - after all, there's no friggin checkbox for bop!)

"What programming languages do you have experience with? Java? C#? HTML? .NET?" (Try explaining which items don't really belong on this list and they will nod their head and smile and laugh it off with a "I'm not really a techical person" line.)

"What tools have you worked with? By tools I mean things like XML." (I'm thinking screwdriver and angle grinder, but hey - data storage concepts are tools too, I guess. Besides - have you even glanced at my resume? I promise it's all in there.)
