  1. Somebody forward this to DJ DangerMouse on Lessig Legal Team Needs Your Copyright Stories · · Score: 1

He was probably one of the most publicized people in the last year burdened by this by releasing The Grey Album.

  2. Lessig And [only Lessig] Answer NewsHour Questions on Lessig And RIAA Answer NewsHour Questions · · Score: 1

I'm not even completely through all the questions and I've already counted at least 3 times where the RIAA guy has completely avoided the question and given completely bogus answers.

Not to mention the shameless plugs for services like PressPlay, Rhapsody, noOneCares, etc.

  3. Filesharing on Ask Internet Expert Dave Barry · · Score: 1

How and when do you think the record companies will learn to use the Internet as a tool and not regard it as an enemy?

  4. Re:Pearl Jam on Which Artists Support Music Swapping? · · Score: 1

I remember seeing Pearl Jam on Letterman right around the time when Napster was gaining publicity. Letterman asked them what they thought about people copying their music and I pretty clearly remembering Eddie Vedder saying something to the effect of "get it any way you can."

  5. Re:Try going to the record store on UC Irvine Cracks Down on P2P · · Score: 1

On behalf of people with normal lives...
Have you forgotten how hard it is being a college student? Or was everything just given to you and you didn't need to get a job until you graduated?
Not everyone just has $20 laying around whenever they need it to go pick up a CD at the local record store.

  6. Re:The Answer is simple on Janis Ian on Life in the Music Business · · Score: 1

Good luck getting the mindlessness of the mainstream to boycott Britney Spears, Creed, and Limp Bizkit and the rest of the BS they think is so great. They don't care about good music, they'll buy it simply because it's marketed and they actually believe that whoever's at the top of the charts is who's the best artist out. That's why a successful boycott of the RIAA will never happen.

  7. Somebody put the kids to bed on Janis Ian on Life in the Music Business · · Score: 3, Insightful

Why doesn't everyone just quit bitching that you're too young to know who Janis Ian is and be glad there's someone speaking out for your rights to download music?
    Grow up.

  8. What about your buying habits? on Talk To a Convicted Warez Guy · · Score: 0

I'm one of those people that tries something first and if I like it, I have to own an original copy. Be it an audio CD, video game, or program. My problem is I'm a broke college student and the 3 programs I use the most are Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, and Maya. Not exactly within my budget, even with the educational discount, though some CDs and the really good video games do manage to squeeze into my budget. As an MIT systems administrator, I would imagine you weren't exactly struggling to feed yourself. How much of your income went to purchasing legit software? Were there ever any products cracked by DoD that you saw and said to yourself that you have to go out and buy? If so, do you plan on using your time in jail to challenge any laws to help put morals we know to be right above the legal system that sometimes has the tendency to falsely jump to conclusions?

  9. Re:Will music survive? on Ask Singer Janis Ian About the RIAA and Online Music · · Score: 0

There'd still be a great deal of music. True artists are in it for the music, not the money. Sure it's nice to have it pay off, but it's because music is in their blood and that's what they love to do.

  10. How would we change the RIAA's mind? on Ask Singer Janis Ian About the RIAA and Online Music · · Score: 0

Recently the RIAA has blamed music piracy as the leading cause for the drop in music sales. I personally feel it is because of two other factors: a global recession; and a loss of interest in who the RIAA wants to be mainstream (ie Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, N'Sync, etc). How would you go about sitting down with the "important people" and showing them that their current business model is not working and that the people they are lashing out against are the biggest fans? More importantly, how would you go about trying to get the little people (ie the fans) involved to show that they are underestimating support from the fans?

  11. The RIAA is only attacking themselves on The Music Business and the Internet · · Score: 0

Assuming the RIAA is actaully telling the truth for a change and CD sales actually are dropping, then it's for one or all of the following reasons:
1 - Price fixing - CD prices getting higher
2 - Promoting BS bands - Pushing bands with little or no talent (ie Limp Bizkit, Staind, Puddle of Mud, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, N'Sync, etc.)
3 - "Copy Protection" - By trying to prevent people from copying music onto their computers, all they've really done is pissed off a bunch of fans resulting in boycotts and CD returns.

I say screw the RIAA. From now on I'm gonna download all my CDs and pay directly to the artist using fairtunes.com (no i'm not affiliated with them).

  12. maybe cs isn't what you really want on What Do You Do When CS Isn't Fun Any More? · · Score: 0

Back when i first started college i was the exact same way. i knew the gaming industry was where i wanted to go...but at the time i was thinking that i wanted to be on the programming side. after about a year i lost a LOT of interest in programming and noticed myself paying a lot more attention to Photoshop rather than C/C++. it took another year for it to click, but that's when i changed my major to art to major in Computer Art. now i'm also a semester away from graduating (as long as i can get all this degree plan bs outta the way) and love my major. i love the thought of having so many options that i'd enjoy - 3d graphics, web page design, ad design, etc. i don't know what i'd be doing if i was still in cs because it began boring me really fast.

so if you're not happy doing programming, look at what else you're doing as far as hobbies go besides programming. maybe your answer's there. and believe me, if you wind up liking computer art like i did, strong technical knowledge comes in VERY handy. you'd be surprised how many computer illiterates are in computer art...at least where i'm at.

    good luck!

  13. Re:Horrible Advertising! on Nintendo Game Cube On (Limited) Preview In 12 Cities · · Score: 0

    Why do nintendo's commercials "suck"?

It's cuz Nintendo knows they have a winner and they know it's gonna sell itself. They don't need to be like Microsoft and associate their name with every location potential buyers go.
They know the Gamecube is going to sell whether it's from pre-release hype or whether it's from friends telling friends how much fun they're having with it.
All they really need to do is make a commercial that says it's on the way.
They did that and gave a few seconds of drool material.

  14. Re:educational discounts? on Piracy vs. Privacy: MP3, Microsoft And Real People · · Score: 1

software is DEFINITELY too expensive. i'm also a college student majoring in computer art - 3d animation specifically. the software that i'm EXPECTED to know for the jobs i want all START at $3000. that's for 3d studio max. i've also seen jobs i want where maya is a requirement...that's a mere $15000 or so. i'm a college student. if i don't pirate this stuff then how the hell am i supposed to afford it and then learn it to find a job i'm happy at? i'm also with the author 100% on the mp3 thing.

  15. Re:Lighten up, Jon. on Review: The Mummy Returns · · Score: 1

i have to agree. i think it's pretty much understood you can't go into either the original Mummy or the Mummy Returns expecting Empire Strikes Back or Raiders Of The Lost Ark. i don't think there are too many people out there appreciate a movie like this. this movie's meant basically just to take you away to another world. it's not meant to be accurate and it probably wasn't going for movie of the year. you have to go into a movie like this ready to relax and you have to WANT to have a good time and appreciate it for what it is...not it's accuracy or plot. if you do that you'll have a great time.
too many people nowadays are trying to read too much into a movie. it digusts me how many people will only go see movies to examine the deeper meaning behind it. what ever happened to just going to see a movie just to get away from reality for a couple of hours? after all...that's all the old black and white ones were trying to do.

and as for the parents appearing on Dateline...maybe you forget that this was set in 1933. if you're gonna bitch about how stupid and inaccurate the Mummy Returns was...then i'm gonna bitch about how stupid and innacurate your review was
