"...while having code so boring anyone can maintain it..."
I hope that I understand that wrong and that you don't consider unintelligible, unmaintainable, code 'interesting' in a good sense.
Because my mama taught me to comb my hair, keep my fingernails clean and write code that other humans can understand without wanting to couge their eyes out with a fork.
Though it is true that the first past the post system does make smaller parties less viable; that last time I voted on a US ballot, there were between ten and twenty parties running candidates; including one completely focused on legalizing marajuiana.
The business model associated with FOSS is outside of the comfort zone of a lot of people. Tt is "I am working hard today so that I may sell services tomorrow" instead of "I am working hard today to sell the product tomorrow". Both are in effect an investment (and neither is inherently "lazy"), but the latter is easier to grasp for many people and the former may easily be perceived as riskier.
I was actually thinking of the builder. I tried out the eclipse plugin and liked it, but not enough to fork over the $700 or so that they wanted a 15 months ago.
Microsoft's plan is to replace Flash as the Flashy web UI of choice. As a UI developer, I am ambivalent. I fail to see how being in Adobe's pocket is any better or worse than being in Microsoft's. Actually, I prefer Silverlight as it does not require that hideously expensive Flex dev environment.
Considering how much the rest of your statement does not match your disclaimer, I'd have to admit that I'm not impressed by the mental prowess of at least one Austrailian. I guess I'll have to consult a few New Zealanders and get my facts straight on the metal capacity of the typical resident of Australia. I'm sure I'll get objective clarity there.
Wars also happen because populations just plain hate each other. Often this has something to do with their respective superstitions.
If you just plain hate the shia/kurds/sunnis/americans/jews/chinese/japanese/etc./etc. the sheer pleasure of turning their country to glass may be its own reward.
I think the GP is alluding to the fact that IT staff can be difficult enough to deal with that people simply find ways around the official IT way. Back when I was in grad school, my group wanted to run a simulation on one of the *nix systems supposedly set aside for research. The requirements were written by a sysadmin who looked at the world from the standpoint of a sysadmin first and did not give a damn if it did not meet the needs of his scientist customers. The solution of my professor was to use grant money to buy another PC that could be dedicated to these computational runs and simply not bother with IT. How often do departments use SharePoint servers because they want to take advantage of IT, but don't want to deal with the arrogant, inflexible IT people?
IIRC, I read somewhere that it is that all of the dromaeosaurids were very, very, closely related to birds and might actually have been flightless birds, having descended from that first bird (the one with the unpronouncable name).
I'd reckon that someone's online behavior - how they behave when there are no consequences - is probably closer to their true personality. You can learn a lot about a person's true self from the way they behave online. Are they a supressed sociopath who only stays in line becasue of the consequences? I'd never hire someone that I knew was a greifer in an online game for this very reason.
Games will help drive vista Penetration. DirectX10 is a Vista only thing and there are new, flashy games on the horizon that are DX10. The gamer crowd that thinks nothing of spending $1000 for a pair of GTX cards will slavishly go to Vista for DX10. On the flip side, if you are using DX instead of OpenGL, DX10 is very nice compared to DX9, so I can see game developers going to is as soon as they can.
Hey, I have lot's of experience investing with rich Nigerians; westerners stuck in Nigeria and in need of cash as well. When my investments come around, I'm going to be a rich man.
It may not be pretty, but that is how language evolves. English got its start when Danes and Saxons had different grammar in their "similar, but not quite the same" germanic languages. They solved the problem by simplification. One of the strengths of English is that the language evolves. The English of the early 21 century is very different to that of the 17th century and even that of the 19th sounds ponderous to modern ears. Read Gibbons' Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire to see just how much English has changed since his time.

That's a bit rough don't you think?

In 1995, everyone was running Netscape.

"You tell me which is more worthy of a headline."
How about neither? I did not care about Cobain eating a shotgun when it happened and I'm thankful that for once i was spared the saturation coverage.
This is the most refreshingly insightful thing I've read on slashdot in ages.

ummm.... right!

Oh that hit the media years ago. It just takes people a while to change their religion.
Never mind the fact that over the top physical desktop metaphors have never caught on in twenty years of being the "next thing".
There you go ratonalizing it again!

Cheer up!
Now you can have the Madden MMO designed by Damian Schubert!
Popular music that sucks gets DRM'ed. Music that sucks that nobody listens to... why even bother?
Whoah!
I happen to agree with your points, but gratuitously insulting the guy does NOT help your argument. Oh wait! This is Slashdot. Carry on.
You just perfectly described 4GW.
Not that big actually. 2 meters long and most of that tail.

My wife is a PhD physicist and loves designing complex software. She still hates monkeying with the home computer.

It appears the hidden meaning in my last statement was missed. Read it again...

It was about his use of dialect that is not intelligible to anyone outside of his region, fucktard.
