  2. Re:Dual 2GHz 970s for $2999 on New G5 Power Macs "Fastest Desktop In The World" · · Score: 1

    err. WOW.

if this is really true (I'd *love* to see proof), it'd be a big deal for the product design community.

Right now, this world is an unholy alliance between designers clinging to ageing Mac systems and product engineers with top-end PC systems for ProE and the like.

However, all the engineers I know secretly lust for a beautiful (stable) Mac Unix box and if ProE defects, I think a whole chunk of these guys would go with them. Goodbye compatibility nightmare...

The truth is, we need PC's - but no-one loves them.

  3. Re:fools on Artists Protesting Single-Song Downloads · · Score: 1

I'm not at all surprised Radiohead are against this - their antipathy to the single format is pretty much a matter of record. Kid A was released with no accompanying singles - they didn't want their work to be judged by the standard of the four-minute pop record.

-and what's wrong with that? At the end of the day it should be their decision. If an artist chooses to limit the formats available to their fans, they'll probably sell less copies. If they feel the 'artistic' trade-off is one worth making, fair enough.

The key point is that all these artists are already highly commercially successful and are guaranteed to sell copies however they dictate format availability. No up-and-coming artist would dream of turning down the chance to sell vast amounts of the one great track on their first album, and that will give them a commercial advantage in the market. say, for example, Radiohead re-recording (minus swearing) and re-releasing Creep multiple times to ensure they had their breakthrough hit ;)

It seems like simple enough capitalist forces to me, and best of all, ones which work to the favor of new artists rather than the big guys.

  4. Re:iTunes Music Store could do some good.... on iTunes Indie Meeting Notes · · Score: 1

not wishing to be personal here, but that is complete crap. Is your complaint that *Michael Jackson* makes albums that are approximately 2% as good as Thriller, or that no-one else does?

y'know, there are people ten years younger than you saying 'remember the 90's - ah, yes, 'OK Computer' - music was so much better then' and sixteen year old's complaining the scene went downhill since Britney's first album.

I'd give examples, but then you might use your superior taste to show that the examples I chose were 'wrong'. Remember quality is *subjective* and I love the albums I bought last week as much as the ones I have published in 1968. There's so much fabulous stuff out there, I can't begin to tell you.

How can PC users see the store - as in the contents? I'm thinking if I could browse the contents from a PC (I know I can't buy anything), they might have me running out and buying a tasty new Imac from the Mac Store down the road in minutes.

However, until I see otherwise, I'm going to assume it's packed with Britney and the Dave Matthews Band and the like.

Good grief! Get a decent input device! Now!

"Most of my attempts to get even basic office supplies at work make me feel like I'm robbing the company."

    1) These things work - I have a colleague who wouldn't be parted from his Cybertouch glove things with a pair of pliers. Everything else hurts. I'm the same with my trackball. Investigate and try stuff - not everything works for everyone, but it's genuinely important to look for a solution.

    2) It's in your company's financial interest to invest in something like this. Your creativity and production is *certainly* worth a measly $1,250 to your company. It's freakin peanuts compared to the cost of you eventually being unable to work. Carpal Tunnel syndrome won't go away if while you struggle on with QWERTY......

    3) How long do you intend to be at your present company? Five years? Twenty years? The neurological damage you're doing with a QWERTY will last until you're ready to retire - and then how will you play DNF?

-it scares me how many people struggle on with pain every single day and do nothing about it. It's not just stupid, it's endangering your health. DO SOMETHING!

since you ask, no. To be honest, my handwriting is medium scrawly, but it was my regular cursive handwriting it couldn't recognize. And I'd say I was about average.

    - I also went "wow!" when it accepted the first six words I wrote in correctly, but then it crapped the next one. I reckon getting words 80% of the time is simply not good enough to be useful. If I have to go back and correct the spelling that often, it is astonishingly frustrating and, frankly, unusable.

  12. despite the article.... on Analyzing the Microsoft Tablet PC · · Score: 3, Interesting

Am I being Offtopic for discussing TabletPC, but that was what the headline said....?

anyway - having seen Tablet PC, it is the most half-assed bit of design I've seen in ages. One thing struck me right off. Considering the tablet concept is intended to be used in portrait mode, why do precisely zero of the UI elements reflect this? The task menu is a tiny strip along the bottom of the screen and it's proposterously hard to hit with the stylus.

of course, the handwriting recognition is abysmal, but that goes without saying.....

  13. Re:What About Amazon? on An IMDb for Books · · Score: 1

there's an overall issue here that reviews are self-selecting. I mean, there's only two cases where I make the effort to sit down and write a review, be it amazon or IMDB:

    1) I just read a book I loved
    2) I just read a book I hated

now look at a random selection of books (or CD's or anything else) on Amazon. Notice how most reviews are 4/5 stars, or 1 star? No-one bothers writing reviews for 2/3 star products.

This isn't much use when it comes to completeness, or comparing the relative quality of a given author/artists work.

Where IMDB scores is that completeness is the goal of the movie buff. I'll bet there are a hundred people who have written reviews for *each and every* Tim Burton movie, and David Lynch, George Romero, David Fincher, and on and on...

This is great for us regular folks - a fan will happily say, y'know "Planet of the Apes" kind of sucked compared to "Edward Scissorhands".

Where I'm going here is a credible (i.e. not commercial) literary site that attracts the people who are knowledgable about authors (by giving erudtite reviews the respect they deserve) would be a great resource. I'll do you a favor and stay out the reviewing process, tho'
