  1. iPod is a good example of keepin' it real on KISS · · Score: 1

The simple menu system, and simple set of buttons on the Ipod mimic what this article is trying to say the latest tech gadgets are not--user friendly.

If more companies tried harder on design and usage, specifically portable music players, there wouldn't be as many complaints.

On the Ipod you've got your forward/backward buttons, the play/pause button, the menu button, the blank (enter) button, and your simple-to-use scroll wheel.

Yet it does a lot. But it also can do the basic operations the consumer wants without him or her having to wade through menus and use various different buttons.

  2. My school district had a similar policy... on 8th Grader Suspended for Using 'net send' Command · · Score: 3, Interesting

After some kids realized that net send was annoying and unblocked the district decided to punish all that used it (and got caught of course).

But, all they had to do was disable windows messenger service...

This really shows the naivety of some of our schools towards technology, which in my school, was always a huge problem. Teachers could NOT keep up with the kids in computer classes, which left a whole slew of kids "left behind" per se (thanks Bush).

  3. DVD Collectors? on The End of Physical Media · · Score: 2

I think people will continue to buy DVDs and watch them rather than using "on demand" services (even netflix) just because that seems to be the trend going on right now. Collecting DVDs still seems to be at the beginning stages of growth, and more and more people are getting more and more DVDs.

For the 15 percent claim, I think it's a little too high. For the other claims, they seem reasonable.

  6. Self Destructing leading to more piratation on More Incompatible DVDs and CDs Coming Your Way · · Score: 2, Insightful

It seems to me that if there are self destructing discs made, it would encourage, indirectly, pirating the cd/dvd for longer term use.

Going against legality of course, but people use all those p2p programs illegally with seemingly little guilt as well.

    Just a thought.

This seems awfully big brother-esque material... it's scary to think that I could be "autofined" in the future for whatever offense--running a stop sign etc... using technology available today.

I'm one of those people with 20 gigs of files on his desktop, yet I notice no performance decrease when I move them to a "C:\my stuff" folder, or any other partition for that matter (although it does look much nicer not having a bunch of crap on my desktop).

OT: If you don't want to see icon's on your desktop, I suggest Iconoid for making icons disappear and reappear (it takes some getting used to, but makes things look tidy in the end).

Back on topic, I call BS to the Desktop folder thing (for win2k at least), unless someone can explain to me why this would matter. Windows 98 and ME or something might have a problem with that, but I don't seem to have that problem on 2000.

Also with big bmp's as backgrounds... I think it's negligible performance wise. True, bitmaps are not as small as jpegs and whatnot (which you shouldn't put on as your background because of stupid active desktop either), but they're almost always 2-3 MB anyways... unless you can't sacrifice that much (which is understandable in some circumstances).

Although it may just be me not being able to see IE render slashdot.org .003 seconds faster. Never know.

If you don't agree... well, I have a cool system where you tell me all your passwords and credit card numbers, and any time you need them, just call me up! It seems to work well for me at least.

Hrm, this is a bad comparison, comparing segregation to people's opinions on copyright laws?

Sound like you're stretching it a bit there, people don't really like the fact that they are getting less freedom from the RIAA when they take away p2p sources... or threaten to... There is NO alternative that compares well enough yet, and until there is, people will not change. If you think this is "copyright" issue or a property issue, its too vague. This is an issue of demand, there is demand for easily downloadable music, cheaply. Why don't the RIAA put out an p2p app with gator hacked into it? People would download it, use it, the RIAA would get money whenever they used it (gator), gov't wouldn't have to mess around with this crap.

Gator of course is just an example, you could also use any ad based campaign, and have a paying option for an ad free service, satisfying both worlds of free and cheap music.
