I guess this is a national version of WIPO? Would NIPLAC deal directly with WIPO?

I work for a company that has been attempting to "clean up" some fraudulent sites who use our copyrighted name to spam and sell "vi\[ag)(ra" and "c[]el3br1x" via email, www popups, etc. We, as a company, have delt with WIPO on many occasions since it seems a lot of the domain owners are in Asian nations (like China). Our efforts have been mediocre at best (it's been 6 months of chasing registrars and new registered owners to just live up to the WIPO ruling).

Anyway, I wonder if we could use the gov't power of NIPLAC to assist us in obtaining these domain names. That would definately assist us in dealing with ICANN and their "approved" registrars, at the very least.

From my research, specifically, into HDTV, I discovered that all the cards only will decipher over the air (yes, with an antenna) HDTV signals and not HDTV from a cable or satelite provider. Highly disappointing. While I do live in the NYC area, I could have gotten an antenna and received NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox all in HDTV over the air, I could not receive HBO, Discovery HD, etc. Because of this current limitation, I temporarily gave up on the HTPC and am waiting for more reasonable resources.

Oh, and something else I found, the FCC has declared that all cable providers MUST have firewire interfaces on their decoder devices as of May 2004. This would mean you could connect a PC to your cable HD converter in order to record programs, but it does not mean that once the programs are on your PC, you will be able to access them from anything other than your cable box.

When electricity first came out, people were afraid of it... people protested it, especially when someone was electricuted, and people just plainly would not accept it. But today, electricity is a given in everyday life in most countries.

Nuclear power is no different in this case. There are those who protest it, especially when there is a "disaster" like Chernobyl... and people just won't accept it. It's new... anything new will be shot down by fear.

And, yes, nuclear fuel is limited, as is oil. The point of building nuclear plants would not be to replace oil, but to reduce our reliance on oil for energy. This technology exists (while bio-tech is still an emerging technology). If we help reduce emissions with the use of nuclear energy, we can focus more time on bio-tech and less time complaining about global warming.

There are really more important things than terrorists. Such as education, jobs, the economy..

    Ah, you are wrong, grasshoppa...

Remember the stock market crash after 9/11? That was due to uncertainty of the future. If you do not have a stable future, where foreigners are willing to invest in the nation and it's companies, it's difficult to have a good economy. The stock market, and the economy in general, do better when there is certainty in the future. Remember that rating called 'consumer confidence?' Dealing with terrorism now helps maintain a stronger future and therefore a stronger economy.

Likewise, how many people lost their jobs after 9/11 due to the economic downturn? How many just lost their jobs because of the direct attacks (like the hot dog vendor sitting outside the WTC). If you don't have a stable nation where there is a secure and solid future, then the economy will be bad and employers wont hire new employees. Dealing with terrorism now helps maintain a stronger future, a stronger economy, and therefore there will be job growth.

One of the main problems with public education is funding. Schools are always looking for extra cash. While education hasnt been hurt so much due to the No Child Left Behind Act sponsored by Senator Kennedy and signed into law by President Bush, the state of education is directly related to the economy and jobs. Larger economy means more people employed means more tax revenvue means more money for the schools.

So, see, while education, jobs, the economy are important, their relevance is not any more than that of terrorism. Sorry you believe Michael Moore when he says, "there is no terrorist threat" but there is. And until we deal with the terrorist threat, there is no guarentee that our economy, our jobs or our education system will be mediocre at best.

Observers noted in the late 1800s (Unna, 1894) that sailors exposed to the sun developed "Seemannshaut," or "sailor's skin," and in the early 1900s an excess risk of skin cancer was observed among farmers. The greater risk for Caucasians exposed to sun was also observed (Hyde, 1906).

This is why Bush was viewed by Republicans so well for 2000. He promised to get rid of the Department of Education in the step to privatize education, but instead enforced it (to the disappointment of MANY republicans). His view, however, was to build a consensus with the Democrats ont he issue (read Ted Kennedy) which ended up a big failure. Other issues exist, but this is the primary one.

And Bush has created jobs. If you do the math (which I know is not hard for most slashdotters), the unemployment rate is currently at 5.4%. Also of note the unemployment rate when Clinton was re-elected was around the same rate. However, in the last 8 years, the U.S. population has increased in size.

Therefore, even if the US working age population in 1996 was let's say 100 million and today it's 120 million (not real numbers, just numbers pulled out of my ass) it means that in 1996 there were 94.6 million people employed. Today, that 120 million with 5.4% unemployment rate would mean that 113.5 million people are employed.

Therefore, there is a net gain in the number of jobs in the US simply because the population increased while the rate stayed the same.

This is why Republicans say Democrats are PESSIMISTIC on the economy. While they look at the number of 5.4%, they will say "hey that's 6.5 million people unemployed which is higher than the 5.4 million number from 1996." The Republicans look at the number which shows that there are actually more people working today than in 1996.

FACT: There are more people employed today than there were in 2000 simply because the population has grown at a greater rate than the unemployment rate.

(Yes, I know you want to compare to 2000, but the logic is still the same)
