Dude he dropped out of Harvard to start Microsoft....

Microsoft didn't start overnight. He dropped out because for the first time in his life, he felt competition. And when he did drop out, his father told him that he was going to do something with his life or go back to school. And so Bill decided to do computers and asked daddy for a loan.

It wasn't a decision, it was a response to daddy's threat. And he was AFRAID to go back to school.

He was a smart guy. He scored a near perfect on his SAT, and went into Harvard.

... and while at Harvard, he realized that EVERYONE there was smart and scored a near perfect score on their SAT's. Making him average. So he dropped out. Giving further insight into his psyche; if he has ACTUAL competition, he will quit the game.

This further lends itself to Microsoft' philosphy as a whole. They bought up or destroyed all competition with their monopoly wherever they could so there was no competition. Now that open source and Apple and Google are in town and ganging up on them, they are not having such a good time of it.

Again, there are alternatives. You just want to list the one way to do things that uses a background process. You don't have to do it with a background process. There are tons of equally acceptable alternatives.

Good point. In fact a good app will have both a CLI and a GUI; this makes it so other programs can interface with it developers want to use it like that. And thats a good thing. Imagine developers building tools based on your tool. As a company, I would totally LOVE that! It would mean more sales. As a devoloper, it would mean more eyeballs on my project (and more sales of my book or more job offers).

Yep, it's a positive and a negative. Alot of developers are going to whine that they can't have daemon processes running in the background but on a portable device that has limited battery power, this really isn't something that should be supported anyway. Especially since it can connect to the web. It can get email notifications and text and IM. you don't need to be running multithreaded daemons on a blackberry or iphone anyway.

Some would disagree but in alot of ways, I think this is a positive move by Apple to enforce good development behaviour.

Depends. There are desktops apps that require next to no support (Firefox, OpenOffice, etc) and then their are server apps that require lots of support (MySQL, Tomcat, Nagios, etc). Now on the server apps, if you installed these, it is generally because you already have developers who know something about what these things are and that they are a low cost alternative and can implement them themselves (or they are willing to learn how).

I have never come across a shop that decided to take those server apps up without someone on hand who knew something about them. For instance I work in an all Windows shop but they want to move alot of stuff to Linux and MySQL and I am their local Linux person since I'm doing everything on a LAMP stack and use Linux for my desktop. So they look to me to help them with transitioning the version control system, setting up replication in MySQL, etc.

You act as if CTO's are morons venturing into open source without a hand to hold. They don't go their without devs or sys admins who know what they are doing... else they hire them before they go there.
