I've been playing all the games on Windows for Mac for years WITHOUT Windows. The same way I do with Linux. I use Cedega. I get a better framerate, can overclock the games easily and can often customize them to see through walls and other neat things.:)
I still love hearing that old propaganda though about no games. Makes me and the thousands that play Warcraft on their Macs laugh and laugh and laugh.
You'd expect but often (as stated early) those sources are by contributors and maintainers and hence are not from third party sources; the open source community relys on the maintainers and contributors to be the masters of their universe and know the most about their product and so most often, they are the people putting out the books, magazine articles, talking at conferences, etc. So unfortunately they would STILL fail the wikipedia editors deletion manifesto against open source.
Go to a open source conference some time, guess who is speaking about that major open source project? It's a maintainer or a contributor.
Actually scientific publications allows for the work itself as long as it is demonstratable and accepted by the scientific community. Computer science is a bit more difficult as it requires you to show that it is in use. For that you can easily point to Sourceforge usage, Freshmeat usage, subscribers, etc. But again, these are not acceptable nor are forums entries on sourceforge or anything else that shows community involvement.
In effect, should your project be one of the most successful and prominent projects in use on just about every Linux distribution, they would still exclude it. The point being, use is evidence of scientific usefulness.
Not true. The scientific and other rules clearly state that articles written by the author are acceptable. They just should be scrutinized. Also scientific publications (of which source code most likely would fall under) is to be taken under high consideration.
Wikipedia editors have also started deleted popular open source projects which don't have book or magazine articles by anyone aside from projects maintainers or contributors. This does not surprise me that they would be also be deleting other things that show their deletion records as well especially when they are going completely overboard with their deletions.
Exactly but where they allow it for scientific data, they don't allow it for open source projects. As one ignorant user stated 'programming isn't the same thing as science' to which I pointed out 'that must be why they call it computer science huh?'. It's all a hypocritical power play by wikipedia editors.
Read again. Listings are allowed with self references as long as they are well documented. Else many scientific journals, mathematic journals or more would never get a listing. When you consider how many software listings also have publications written by the author of the software or a contributor (COI), that fails their litmus test too. That precludes just about all open source software out there. The wikipedia system allows for scientific exceptions which most wikipedia authors neglect to take into consideration and become overzealous in their attempt to edit.
Some editors of Wikipedia have taken to removing open source project listings from Wikipedia as a result overzealous practices and begun a basic cleansing of open source projects on the basis that they do not have reference materials in books or magazines. I had an argument with several editors when my project in the Sourceforge top 2000 got removed and they claimed they were doing it to all open source projects that didn't have magazine or book publishings by people OTHER than project maintainers.
I use Apple and Linux at Home and Windows and Linux at work and I have to say that Apple (like Pixar) does a great job on polishing under the drawers; they don't do anything halfassed in the total experience. They control the product, the store and the whole experience for a reason... to make them look extremely polished and extremely in control.
Until Microsoft opens their own shops and controls their own hardware OEM, they can't quite duplicate the same experience that Apple has at their stores. They only thing they can do is create propoganda in a controlled environment. And Apple already has retail people and retail sections in Bestbuy locations so these MS people are going to have to compete on their turf; Apple people don't compete with anyone in their stores.
Actually you can't. I'm building a MythTV box and over the counter prices are higher than OEM discounts for buying direct and in bulk. So you are going to end up with a machine that's going to cost you at least $500 more out of pocket if you are building it yourself.
Wow. You really do have no life. What do you do? Sit in your moms basement all day checking Slashdot every 5 seconds awaiting my response. Cool! It's nice to know I have a troll waiting on my beck and call... ok now troll. Dance for me, DANCE!
'You are defensive' says the Pot to the kettle as he continues to attack. Gee I wonder why? Hmmm... think you can figure this one out on your own there genius? You haven't to date even with me holding your hand like a child. Somehow I doubt this will be any different. I wait with baited breath for your 'brilliant reply; I'll bet it will be as illuminating as a burnt out light bulb in a broom closet.
Yeah and points on Slasdot are about as significant as Republican polls in red states. They are only as significant as the loser who wants to blows his mod points. Thanks for blowing yours on my last post by the way, you affected me not as I have points to spare otherwise I wouldn't waste time taunting losers like yourself. Now begone or I shall taunt you a second time.
If you used your brain for two seconds and read the original statement, you'd have realized that it was two separate statements joined (hence the AND). The sentence CAN be interpreted two different ways; you and the retard patrol just happen to have jumped to a conclusion. Learn how the english language works before trying to correct someone. You sound less retarded when you know what your talking about.
no... I included two statements in the same sentence (ie I did one thing and I did another thing). As in I chewed bubble gum and used my brain at the same time. Something you seem incapable of since you can't seem to comprehend the original statement beyond your minimalistic interpretation of what was meant. Pick up your knuckles sometime.
I imagine that a million people will list books; I listed the most common tools that he will need to familiarize himself with as he seems to be coming from a web dev background. This was the hurdle for me when transitioning over... not the language. So from my perspective as a web dev (similar to him), the hurdle would be learning all the new tools and not so much the language as the language is very logical and easy to follow.
Duh. But he may want to know what tools to use. Eclipse is a great tool for Java development. He may want to use a different tool but Eclipse is one that alot of Java developers use.
I started with Eclipse (as I use it for LAMP development) and switched to Tomcat since I was already doing web dev and it was the quickest paradigm to switch to. I'm also trying to pick up STRUTS2 which judging from your background may also be a good choice for you. From there, the options are based upon your needs. For a book, I would not suggest Java headstart as you obviously are a bit further along in your development knowledge. Perhaps an O'reillys book on java.
exactly. People seeing only the broken window and not the lost civil rights are losing site of what is TRULY being lost. At the end of the day which would you rather have: a broken window by a rioter or a broken jaw by a cop for speaking your mind?

Yeah, you can now install Vista on your Mac and get all those nifty viruses you've been missing out on!!

Ah... software isn't science... hmmm, must explain the name 'computer science' huh? But I'll bet you must know better than academia though.
Heh... they do tend to be an inbred lot. Maybe this can be cited as a source in their retardation :)

One word... Linux. :)

Translation: I'm no MS but but I'm going to make a knee jerk statement of an MS fan thus revealing my true identity. DAMN YOU BATMAN!

so he is arguing about semantics? what a lamer.
