No OS discrimination? Try again! I work for a vendor with MS and I use Apache, MySQL and PHP and (though not OS based in nature) I CONSTANTLY get complaints about why I am not using MS products. I even had the head consultant for Microsoft come on by and chat with me about why I need to use ONLY Microsoft products.
They are EXTREMELY biased... even their employees. Rabid in nature.
Read the article? Silly human. Reading is for inbreeding troglodytes. I download the data via my aural sockets!!
As for wondering why I would have a problem with urine smell, try commuting and having that one homeless person who causes an ENCLOSED AREA to stink to high heaven.
You can compare a pig farm that is outdoors where it can dissipate all you want but when you enclose the stench within a confined space, it intensifies; think of a fart in a crowded elevator and you'll get the idea. Except with that one urine soaked homeless person, think of a thirty minute long fart that continues to fill area to maximum capacity.
All I can say is get these guys on the public transit in Seattle and San Fran; I'm sick of people forgetting that not everyone likes the smell of urine.
Comet Cursor is perhaps the most insidious I have come across. Every female in our office thinks it's 'cute' and thus installs it and, like a virus, every other female that sees their computer installs it as well. This then installs adware, spyware and hijackware all over their system.
Yesterday, I was on a conference call helping to set up someone terminal so that they could access a secure site. The person was told over and over again to go to the URL but nothing happened... so I said I'd be on over and check out their computer (guessing they had installed comet cursor or something and it was hijacking their browser).
Sure enough, I get to their computer and just looking at their damn cursor, I knew it was installed on their system. I then removed comet cursor and ran ad-aware and sure enough... they were then able to access the secure server.
Yeah, get C# to be cross platform compliant and maybe more people will use it. Right now as is, server side development is moving away from platform-centric coding as more and more people realize that their code needs to be able to work on a variety of platforms. Sun, Linux, Windows, Mac, etc... if your code cannot migrate, the app will more than likely get replaced with code that can... especially within a business environment.
I have seen ALOT of applications and scripts get chucked or redone simply because they cannot work on a variety of platforms. Naturally, SOME apps it really doesn't matter... but as far as development is concerned, especially when it comes to the web and web services, cross platform is the key to your success.
People in college are learning it only if they are going to a weak ass college with a lame comp sci dept. Community college anyone?
Tell you what... when C# become cross browser compliant, they MAYBE industry experts will consider it a serious language. Untuil then, it's just Microsoft trying to tie developers into using only one OS.
Oooohhh... how many years later? Should I jump up and down because they FINALLY added a firewall and it's a piece of shit?
If Microsoft was so good and so secure, why does www.microsoft.com come up with them running Linux for their caching and distribution? Because Microsoft can't handle it! They would crash in a heartbeat!
Face facts, Microsoft has lost their edge on the server market. I wouldn't trust their unstable, wide open hackable piece of crap for even the small business. But hey, it's great for playing games.
Um... I'm sorry you're stupid. Does windows come with a built in firewall? No. Does Linux install with everything turned on? Nope.
Do MCSE qualified professionals know how to do anything outside of the gui? Rarely.
Not only is the OS more stable, comes with it's own firewall and forces you to turn on only the options you plan to use, Linux gurus/sys admins have to know how things work and are far more knowledgable than the average MCSE expert.
And do you know why there are so many version of Linux? because they are constantly patching their own security holes, adding new features and not sitting on their asses waiting for those security holes to go away on their own.
Wasn't it Steve Ballmer who said he wished those security experts would just shut up? Does that REALLY sound to you like he is concerned with computer security or just wants security through obscurity?
Totally valid point. But for the kind of thing a MSCE person could do, you are not talking that much of a price diff. Now, developing a clustered datawarehouse is something you are going to pay alot for regardless and most MSCE people are going to be out of their league on huge enterprise level deployments like that.
Personally, I think there are places where Linux or other open source software really is the best option... back end. Back end deployment for web servers, networking, databases, etc is great. Use windows to push user images to their desktops and use open source as the backend for databases, CRM's and other more universal resources.
I've used a web server, a database and server side scripting to hook up alot of my companies resources and make them more universally usable by all departments both locally and on the road. I can export dynamically generated reports and pagesd as PDF's, DOC's and even XCL spreadsheets... and all using a simple AMP architecture.
Why pay for something when there is a product that is equally good for free? Would you want your government buying $500 hammers when you were able to get one just as good if not better for free.
To me, this isn't just a choice for the tax payers, it's a choice for common sense.
Hmmm... testing this out but so far it seems with some minor adjustments, I can run php scripts with it installed as an apache module too. I just have to make sure the system knows where to find the necessary files:)

Oops... heh. Meant cross platform. Thanks.

yeah well when I jump on a treadmill, I expect to lose weight... not gain it.

Get a brain then get a life.
I can save more money than that by not buying the book at all.
Well hell yeah! You show me where I can get some of these free light, dump trucks and roads that are just as good as paid for ones.
Oh... they don't exist? So what was your point again?
You can create and manipulate OpenOffice.org docs :)
directly inside of PHP using XML. And openoffice can save as words docs.
You just have to have open office on your machine.

Let's put it this way...

Ah... yep. That was the other 3rd grade tactic I was waiting for.
or can't comprehend...
Heh. This is hilarious. What 3rd grade tactic are you going to use next?
Ok, prior to talking about sex, first try having it. And no, your mom doesn't count.
Heh. Now you beg? This is getting amusing. :)
Nope. I call that telling you to educate yourself.
Sorry but I can't perform miracles. Try reading a book on it. You can find them at your local library. :)
Progress always seems anti-social to those being passed. :)
Forget it. He's just a Microsoftie that can't support his argument with anything intelligent. Flush him along with the rest of the floaters.
If I have to explain how an insult creates FUD in a social network then you are more stupid than I originally thought.
Never under estimate the LOW IQ of an anonymous bastard.

Learn something new every day.
LOL. More FUD from an Anonymous loser... I'm so hurt :)
