Sell computers for my job (in addition to being a full time CS student). I talked to the AMD rep who comes to our store. He had threemajor points:
One: no new processors from AMD anytime soon. Just renaming the processors and removing mention of the Athlon name (AMD 1600 for the 1.2 GHz, AMD 2100 etc).
Two: They are making a killing in the corporate market.
Three: There next big focus area is the laptop market. This will be the only place with "new" AMD processors. Most likely people will see more 1.0 GHz+ AMD based laptop systems soon.
Why is this modded up to Score: 5?
It's amazingly incorrect and flawed reasoning and thinking. The poster also might want to head to his local library and check out something we like to call a "history book" as his view on history is hardly worth anything at all.
This post should be -1 Flaimbait, Stupid because that's what it is.
still hasn't done a damn thing to help Canadian peacekeeping troops in any number of global hotspots
What, does the US have to hold Canada's fucking hand? I think you boys are big enough to actually do a thing or two on your own.
an earthquake of 10 is not just 1 notch above an earthquake of 9. It's 10 times more powerful.

First of all, they're actually all a bunch of fucken pussies. They make the average slashdot reader look like superman.
Secondly, for some reason I don't see how destroying labs full of years of cancer research as being anything but really fucking stupid. These shitbrains put animal life _ABOVE_ human life. Burn them all and shove a fucking 22 ounce rare steak down their throats.
You can buy a low-end pentium box for about $20. It's about 50x faster than the C64
Obviously you know so very little about the C64, one of the greatest computers ever. Which is too bad. A low end pentium box would probably be more like 10,000-50,000 (maybe even more?) times faster then a C64, considering it had a total of 64KB of RAM and it's processor ran at around 1mhz.
C64 processor info:
It has 3 registers, 256 opcodes (although not all of them are useful), and runs at around 1 mhz (that was from everything2.org).
Take any computer engineering class in college and you'll end up designing hardware that's a ton more complex then that.
Make a bunch of large robot bees to scare away all the other bees.
And then make an even larger robot bear, to steal honey from the robot bees.
Then make some robot hunters (who have really bad aim), to try and shoot the robot bear, who's stealing the honey from the robot bees. But the hunters will miss, and will then be mawled by the large robot bears big robot claws.
Well, due to the fact that the PPC7400 has an Altivec unit it is much faster than any comparable Intel processor.
To get the same speed from Intel hardware you need something like 50 dual Pentium/// computers.
Who moderates these comments up when they are completely false and incorrect babble only believed by.1% of all computer users (because they like to make their art "pretty")? Everything the guy said is wrong. And obviously wrong.
I mean really...
"And the price for rackmount computers is almost comparable with the Apple G4 dual 450." Uhmm... no, sorry.
One more case how strict patent hurts US. Americans cannot benefit from the result of the research to improve food production, while third world countries where US patent law doesn't apply could take advantage of it.
Yeah, all those damn 3rd world countries studying the genetic structures of food! And then using that expensive technology to improve their high tech farms! With all their lush farm land! That's why they never have famines!
So what does the government use to PAY the company that PRINTS the money?
There is no "company" that prints money. The government prints it's own money:)
It pays it's employees with tic-tacs, an unlimited supply of red tape, and weekly full body cavity searches.
What kind of sensors/tech are on this thing?
And what kind of data can they get from it?
It'd just be interesting to get any sort of data from that for away, no matter how trivial.
The computer image generator system is a SGI Onyx2 InfiniteReality2 Monster. It includes six InfiniteReality graphic displays, 24 R12000 processors, 12 gigabytes of memory, and access to large disk I/O and gigabit ethernet networking.
Just to run 4 projectors and a wireless glove or two? Good grief.
Well, it's running a SGI port of Windows XP and those are the minimal requirements.
MTV is the absolute worst at this.
They have those stupid huge annimated icons that are always moving around and dancing in the bottom right corner.
Hmmm... or maybe 10 hours later?
What speed!
Sprint PCS is slated to roll out 3G service in the US in late November - Early December.
It will not be 384k. It will start a pretty low speed ~28k and ramp up to DSL later in 2002.

How many people actually believe that the G5 is coming out in January?
Come on people. It's a rumor! let it go!
with the 1.6 GHz, 64-bit G5 PowerPC processor due out in January or February, and you have a VERY formidable machine.
Wait... you actually believe those rumors?
Heh... sorry, but G5s are still no where on the horizon.
Interesting example.
Running the OSX Benchmark on the G4/400 tower. And then running the OSX benchmark on a 700mhz P3 laptop.
Strangely enough, I'm guessing that OSX Benchmark is optimised for Apple hardware. Hmmm... Maybe?
Oh wait, that's about all they post.
/. I don't know how anyone can consider the Register a reliable news source.
Baseless rumors and absolute bullshit.
Sorry, but it's just not going to happen. Suprised this even got onto

The performance difference between the RAMBUS version and the DDR version.

I've got two C64s right here. Along with a 300 baud modem. Should be fun :)
