" The difference is, Scientists will eventually admit they were wrong and their "beliefs" will morph and change over time based on evidence. Religion will not." Are you suggesting that Catholics from the Middle Ages hold all the same beliefs as modern day Baptists? All religions change, because they are made up of people. People change, thier beliefs and ideas change because the world around them changes. Religon, in many cases, is similar to science in that it is just a collection of people who are trying to understand a basic common problem. Yes there are religons who think they have never changed and never will. There are also scientists who thought that the world was always flat and it could never be anything different. Some people think they are the only ones who are right, and all others are wrong. But this is not exclusive to religion or any other group for that matter.
Also, as a blatant plug, check out WebVCR+ which uses a web interface and records videos to your hard drive using your favorite command line video recorder.
"Are you saying that instead of having one set of rules, we should have several that depend on the size of your organization and the amount of power it wields?"
No, hes saying that when a company breaks the law they should be punished. MS has been convicted of breaking a law, hence they should be punished by forcing modularity.
You have the right to own a gun, however people who are on parole can be restrictred from owning one.
"It seems to me that the key missing element is some sort of database of listings. It seems that it ought to be doable -- we have freedb's of CD track names, for example."
XMLTV (http://freshmeat.net/projects/xmltv/) is a great way to get listings into a personal database. I think the only stipulation is that you cant redistribute them publicly I think. I use it in my *cough* blatant plug *cough* WebVCR+ project (http://webvcrplus.sourceforge.net/) and it works really well, IMO.
He specifically says hes living aboard the sailboat, so that the majority of the time, even when docked, he will be around sea water. Your computer may be trivial for you, but some people actually use it to communicate with other human beings, not just as a MP3 repository. So before you go assuming everyone is horribly addicted to this evil box, you might actually want to stop and look at the facts.
Damn people, like 10 of you totally missed the joke. Is there something running on slashdot's webservers that filters out any sense of humor you might have? Dont answer that:)
You said yourself you were running unstable. You should expect that kind of behavior from unstable, thats like using vi because "of course, thats where all the cool features are" then wondering why the hell its so hard to use.
Go to Woody, I have never had any problems like you described and GAIM worked just fine for me.
You know what else is on its knees? Your mom. Yeah, she likes it too. Sos your dad, and your dog, which it doesn't really have to be on its knees but it seems to like that position. If you have a sister, she is there too, but if not, then you have a twin sister that you were seperated from at birth, and she is down on her knees, screaming my name.
This is not a flame, I am just trying to inform the helpful reader of the wherabouts of his/her's family.
Games are a very beneficial and productive use of computing power. How many people have learned how to use the computer to play games (or use napster, or email which would probably fall under "useless" when you consider how most people use it). Sure, it didnt turn everyone into a linux guru (nor can everyone BE a linux guru) but it taught them something useful. Also, how many people "blow off steam" by playing games? This is a very important use of games, to release stress. Without games or other forms of entertainment, well we probably wouldnt have the computing power to begin with (nor a society whom to use it on). Civilization wouldnt have gotten this far without fantasy and entertainers.

Suck it.
Deficient in which regard? The girlfriend or the trackpoint? I never cared for the trackpoints much myself, but the girlfriend on the other hand ;)
John Romero cant leave without his buddy Superfly!
