    RH are only *distributing* some GPL software. They package it up nicely and throw in a program which puts it all in the right places for you, but they're not selling you their software.

    We've got an ancient sparc sitting near me with an optical mouse. suns have had 'em for yonks.

    However, they're clunky and awkward, especially if you're used to mice with balls (thees ees a real mouse, sen~or, con cojones!) or trackballs.

    MS's hardware division seems to exist on a higher plane than their software division as most of their products are pretty damn good. Of course they screwed up on the new natural keyboards.

    The major difference between 95 and 98 are FAT32 and some changes to the interface.

    The internal version strings are still 4.0.foo.

    And as for more stable, I don't find that at all. If anything, it's worse, although it does recover better.

    For many people in China, a desktop would be useful mainly to shelter under when it's raining or too sunny.

    As for a computer, the big barrier is literacy in English.

    Handwritten input of chinese characters is big business here and that input method is something Linux needs to work on.

    Runners (especially distance runners), cyclist, martial artists and lone sportsmen generally probably aren't 'jocks'. I fall (or used to anyways) into the 'lone sportsman' category and still got labelled as a geek/nerd by the football mob.

    The bot coding in Q3Demo(test) is pretty good. The bots are aware of where things are, they jump and strafe, and they keep moving. Impressive stuff.
    Q3A is a very fast game, much much more frenetic than Q2, IMHO.

    "Simplified" character support is not a watered down version of Chinese.

    Mao Zedong made attempts to simplify some of the characters during the cultural revolution, so that there are slight difference between written Chinese on the mainland and Hong Kong or Taiwan, who both use the traditional character set.

    If you look at some 16bit character sets you'll see ones for big5 (traditional) and simplified Chinese.

    They may understand the medium, but they are coding for most of their target market. This is the nub of the argument.

    IE5 is currently the best browser available. People will code for IE5 specific features. Other browsers on other platforms will not support these. Therefore other platforms will not be able to compete with win* when it comes to viewing the web.

    ipso facto, quid pro quo, non illegitimi carborundum, win* becomes the only viable 'OS' with which to view the web.

    Those who use lynx, maya, opera, mozilla are viewed in the same way as stone axe users at the start of the iron age.

    The point is not whether or not it'll *work* well, it's whether you can *buy* a laptop without paying for windows.

    my laptop has run win95, win98, w2k, QNX, linux, BeOS and solaris, but I still had to pay for win95 when I bought it.

    Given that the Queen has been using email for about 30 years, she's probably used to unix-like systems. certainly more traditional than windows.
