They ask artists to listen to and rate music in order for the artist/band to upload their own stuff. I've come across some really good music thanks to this system, and in turn, got some exposure for ourband.
"Oh yes, and as for the American Indians with dark skin, if you read the actual text of the Book of Mormon you would know that in the last days they are to be one of the most blessed peoples of earth and that in the days after Christ were among the most righteous on earth."
Do stories about failing to qualify as Dumb-ass tech support reps count?
I interviewed at Novell a long time ago when I thought I knew a lot about computers. During the group interview, one of the guys asked me to describe the Windows Registry.
Clueless as to the correct answer, I took my best shot at it. Said I: "Isn't that where you send your card back to Microsoft to register the copy of Windows that you just bought?"
Years later, I now understand why one guy at the table nearly spewed his drink through his nose...
Well, if you ask me, it's bad enough that the French have a different word for everything. You'd think the Brits would have the good taste to speak proper American:-P
Author and submitter sound like they're a bit grumpy over this whole computer fad thing. "Darn kids and their technology! Why, when I was your age, I had to write my reports on *paper*... with a *pencil*!!..."
C'mon... the only success stories in schools were where the comps were not in the classroom, and weren't networked (how do you print??) sounds fishy to me, and smacks of some serious anti-tech bias, IMHO.
"Freeache"?? I don't get it...

Plus, you can beat price/performance on PC laptops anyway:

Make a more expensive option that doubles as an led light keychain.
For uber-coolness, make the keychain so it doubles as a lighter. Then they can buy it on the way in, use it for the encore ("Freeee Biiiiiirrd!") and then plug in for the download on the way out.
Add stereo jack out for listening to in the car on the way home!
Agreed. After getting a $10 gift cert for Christmas, I still have close to an $8 credit because I haven't found anything I want to download beyond the 2 songs I grabbed in Dec...
You're not paying them for rights or ownership; you're paying for the privledge of having your music files hosted on a publicly-accessible web site so you can share with a lot of people.
Do you know how many bands/musicians pay through the nose to get their songs heard by larger audiences? Using both legal and illegal (payola) methods?
God bless the Internet and sites like GBC who make it a little easier on the indy bands to get heard without whoring themselves out to the big Music Marketing Machine(tm)!
...I'll be impressed when the computers not only *speak* the dialogue, but actually *write* the screenplay!

I for one whole-heartedly endorse BYU Coeds :-)

True, and, in fact, a close examination of the Book of Mormon reveals that some of the most righteous and inspiring people at times were indeed dark skinned (Lamanites): Samuel, King Lamoni and his father and brother, the people of Ammon, the two thousand stripling warriors...etc.

Great idea... beautiful art...
But who the hell calls shopping carts "shopping trolleys?"
I mean really...
Ok, good point. I was just assuming no one used Apple //e's nowadays...
Btw, I did go to a school that used (almost) no computers.

At $200 a pop (pun intended) these things seem a bit expensive for equipment that often ends up being squished...
