Here is AG's Media Contacts page... it dosen't seem to be linked up from their corporate site at the moment, but that didn't stop Google from finding it! :)

    Or, for quick reference...

Of course, make sure to include the nazi who started all this: Rinda E. Vas (rinda.vas@amgreetings.com) - Corporate Counsel!

My thinking is that when Media Relations gets wind of this, they're going to be all over Rinda for creating such wonderful publicity. Start making noise (tactfully please)!

  2. Give me a break! on First Test of Utah Anti-Spam Law Dismissed · · Score: 2, Interesting
Actually, I think the bigger issue is that most companies hire out third parties to spam their mailing list.

For example, some of my web design and hosting customers pay me to send out their newsletters (strictly opt-in). Say company X sends me their newsletter and mailing list on Feb 25th to be mailed out on March 1st... if somebody decides to opt-out on Feb 28th, they're still going to get the March newsletter because I don't maintain the list.

I think it's only fair to give companies a few business days to sort things out in an opt-in/opt-out scenario, as outgoing mail may already be in a sense "queued".

Let me also head off any insistance that the large spam brokers be responsible for handling the opt-out requests and maintaining a live database: this service usually involves large setup fees, and the client may not want to get married to one spam broker right away... so they will often send a static mailing list for a one-time mailing instead.

I personally think it's rediculious that this article even found its way onto slashdot. For chrissake, it might have taken two full days or more to process a single LARGE mailing list if they are contending with SMTP flood thresholds at large ISPs with lots of opt-in subscribers. You can't just rapid-fire 10,000 emails to MSN accounts from one server and not expect to get your IP blocked! Infact, most companies even tell you when you opt-out that it may take a few days before you stop receiveing emails.

Now, watch me get modded down by the idealist slashdot spam nazis for having a potentially unpopular opinion.

I had two quick replies to questions people asked about previous comments. The first one posted just fine, but the second gave me an error saying I had to wait longer before posting again (two minutes I think).

Okay, fine it's spam prevention, I'll just wait a couple minutes... so I hit back, and the previous page EXPIRED! Luckily, i've run into this before without other rediculious slashdot errors and timeouts and compose all my replies in a text editor first. (I can't begin to tell you how many long posts and hours of my life I've lost forever thanks to slashcode's incredibly sloppy session handling.)

So I wait two minutes, and then paste and repost my comment, only to get slapped with "Slow Down Cowboy!" "Slashdot requires you to wait 20 seconds between hitting 'reply' and submitting a comment." (and incase you're wondering, yes, the post entry page EXPIRED again.)

Common guys, at this rate you might as well post a message above the text box saying "Slashdot will likely shred your comments if you type too fast, please compose them elsewhere, paste, and THEN sit on your thumbs 20 seconds before hitting submit."

Of course, it's probably more import to nip those "Duplicate Story" posts in the bud right along with the FP's. I mean, just think of the OSDN stockholders $$$ at stake!

Basically, sustained downloads perform great on both server and clients, but individual images on webpages seem to only load one at a time, as if only one socket connection is being made at a time to the server to download them. Running multiple simutaneous sustained downloads also seem to suffer, but not as bad has normal http page element traffic.

If anyone knows what causes this or how to solve the problem without 3rd party software (SatServ seems to work great), I would greatly appreciate it!

Okay... since you quoted Carl Sagan, I'll bite...

The difference is whether or not you are refuting an argument that is extraordinary or obviously contradicts what is commonly known by your audience.

In this case, the proportion of prison populations attributable to drug arrests is not a matter of common knowledge to the audience (as evidenced by /. commentary).

Your mistake is in believing that your side of the argument is the pre-established popular belief, when actually neither side is.

...Others say that whether a claim is "extraordinary" or not is entirely a matter of subjective opinion. To the UFO believer, they say, UFO sightings are not unusual at all - and so any evidence will do. On the other hand, they say that a committed skeptic's subjective rejection of UFO claims places the necessary standard of evidence beyond reach. The problem with this interpretation is that if all claims are only as good as each individual's pre-existing bias about the subject, then it is meaningless to demand any standards of evidence whatsoever. Each ignorant savage is left with the impression that whatever he wants to believe is true, is true - quality of evidence notwithstanding. -Jeff Dee

To go one step further... where this principle breaks down in the absence of supporting or opposing scientific fact (i.e.: UFOs) letting both sides off the hook for proof, the same principle makes proof a requisite for both sides where obtainable facts exist but are outside the scope of your audience's common knowledge.
