Can't that be remedied at the kernel level, though?
I don't know anything about sound processing, but I would figure you could do some kind of output stream meshing...a bitwise of two raw sound outputs, perhaps? --------------------------
Although Esound is another another abstraction, its a poor one. On my computer, playing sound through the OSS layer works fine.
Once esd gets running, however, even really short sounds have a tendancy to hiccup.
Example
OSS: "Hi my name is Linus Torvalds..."
Esound: "Hi my-my-my n-n-n-n-am-e-e-e i-i-i-is Lin-in-in-in-us-s-s-s-s T-T-T-or-or-or..." (you get the idea).
Why do we need ESound? The OSS layer works fine. Just have Alsa and OSS come up with a common sound.h that allows them to do their thing. esd.h (or whatever it is) can be changed to wrap around that so nothing Gnome is broken until everything is fixed to use sound.h.
Standards are good. Adding an extra daemon just to do what OSS does already is pointless. At least, IMHO.:-)
In the college world c++ is the DEFACTO STANDARD AND NOT C.
I'm a CMU CS student, and I can tell your for a fact, it most definitely is not. 95% of all coding is C (the resting being a mishmosh of C++, Java, and ML). --------------------------
Uhm. Where is this mozilla that you speak of? The Mozilla I've tried has been bloated, slow, and buggy.
I tried submitting bug reports...I followed their FAQ to the letter...but people on bugzilla seemed to scoff at any reports from anyone outside of @netscape.net.
For me, IE5 in Windows, Konqueror in Linux. Both are very speedy, and neither one has crashed yet for me...
Beautiful, Enoch. That was perfectly written. Thank you for taking the frustration with Open Source zealtos and putting into words. --------------------------
Oh, I never thought MacX for Aqua was a bad thing...I was arguing the "goodness" of X...I just think it can be done better;-) --------------------------
X has a cool concept. But if it ever wants to be used by the masses, in needs some reworking.
Windows and MacOS are significantly better (IMHO, YMMV, yaddah yaddah yaddah) than X because they simply do things faster. X with all its networking overhead makes an inefficent desktop.
Do I need to display remote apps? Not often. Even then, most of the time a terminal will do. I would like to see something for Linux much more Win/Mac like - a fast, no-network-bullshit display system. If I want to run remote apps, I'll start an X server similar to X-Win32 or MacX. --------------------------
What the hell are you talking about? You are doing them a favor. They should be grateful to you that you're donating your hardware/bandwidth especially in this time of DoS attacks.
Of course, your attitude is fairly standard among IRC users. I'm not sure why, either. IRC is just a protocol Like ICQ. Or Oscar. Its not something special. Its not a way of life. If you think it is, get out and see the sun sometime. --------------------------
Perhaps this is paranoia talking, but...

KDE Strikes Back

...does it seem to anyone else that Taco is stoking the fires in the KDE/Gnome battle?
I say this because, well, typically KDE beta announcements are posted by HeUnique. They are typically short and sweet: "KDE Beta x is out. Go have fun."
Taco, otoh, seems to be posting material that's pretty inflamatory towards Gnome...trying to make KDE look bad. I know people can say stupid things sometimes, but I don't think its _just_ the KDE camp doing it;-)
Am I crazy? Ok, well, I know I am, but am I just reading into this too much? --------------------------
Am I the only one who thinks the embed a blah in a foo has been taken way too far? Yes, being able to post a spreadsheet in a word doc is nice, but who really needs a file manager that can embed everything?!? I miss the days where file managers managed files.:-) --------------------------
What machine are you using? My machine (P-200) runs IE 5.5 well under Win98, but NS doesn't do well under Linux or Windows... --------------------------
I love using RH...but their Gnome installation just sucks...and I don't want Helixcode's installer to just d'load the RPMs and install. I guess I just got sick of managing RPMs and hand installs...so I install RH but stop with the basic X install, then I install Gnome 1.2 and KDE2 by hand.
Perhaps I'm crazy. But I like it better this way.:-) --------------------------
Actually, I've heard rumors of really cool stuff being created in MS R&D...anyone know if this is true? If so, what cool toys do they have?:-) --------------------------

Get rid of Esound. Now. Please.
:-)

Where did you get your numbers from?

When one person says it, it may be a lie. When more say it, there may be some truth.
Mozilla isn't ready for primetime. It was painfully slow compared to Konqueror, and it didn't render a page w/ CSS anything like IE or NS4.x does.
I'm going to put it through more tests, but I'm finding it hard to keep my hopes up.

Yes, I have used it. Aqua is pretty, but I'd prefer a different theme.
But I'm wondering what the point of your comment is....

And since X is a protocol, it is neither slow, buggy or holding anything back any more than HTTP is slow, buggy or holding the web back.
Good lord, man, have you used X11?

Almost. I have a 4gb and a 2gb drive. Damn college bills preventing me from owning the latest and greatest toys.

That wasn't funny.
