Ok, I'm not a KDE developer, but I read the mailing list (you can learn a lot about a successful project by watching how they handle things...)

lack of KDE-aware apps Yeah...it seems as if there's a lot more GTK/Gnome apps out there...hopefully, that'll change;-)

Sorry if I've messed anything up here...its too early in the morning... --------------------------
Its Free Beer tho. No source code, although such a release would really show their support for the Open Source Community.
Ever heard of being thankful for what you get? Borland makes quality stuff, and its great to see this come out. But, CmdrTaco, your comment sounds (at least to me) resentful. Lighten up a bit, ok? --------------------------
I have a memo here which says Linus Torvalds bought 10 copies of Solaris because he likes it. I have another memo here which says Alan Cox shaved. Another memo in my possesion says my roommate has a smiley face tatoo on his left testicle.
See where I'm going with this? Unless I see the memo, I don't believe it.
(Of course, I expect Win2K to ship with bugs. Lots of bugs. Just not 65k of them) --------------------------
/. promotes Star Wars because they feel its synonomous w/ Geekdom...and they're willing to take this idea to its irrational extreme.
Of course, there's lots of other things that should be put in this catagory. I've never seen CUBE, but one thing I must question you on is Pi. I saw that film, and, imho, it sucked. Of course, all my friends thought it was good, but ehn, their taste is screwed up.:-) So, general question to that/. community: What makes Pi so great? I simply didn't get it... --------------------------
(This is all just speculation, I have no fact to back it up)
There is probably some contract that MS set up with the university such that only faculty (and maybe grad students) have access to the code. Even then, if one of them *did* release the code to the general public, that person would be screwed by the university and MS.
Although I would be interested to see the code for Win2K (specifically, the kernel...I've been trying to find how it differs from a Linux/monolithic kernel, pros/cons, etc.) I doubt I will see it anytime soon.
While I think your review is slightly(?!) terse, it does bring up an interesting idea...could we bug MS until we get a copy of IE for Linux?
Honestly, while I love Linux to death, its ability to do web browsing is still somewhat restricted. NS 4.x has been probelmatic for most people I know, the only people I know who use lynx are masochists (j/k! calm dowm;-) ), and Mozilla is still in the "getting there" stage. (I'm right now dloading Opera and going to try that in a few).
Does anyone think that MS is even thinking of porting IE to Linux? --------------------------
I know Knuth did TeX...something which is invaluable to the scientific and engineering communities(I say this not knowing how to use it...I base it on all the materials I've seen written using it). Its impact has been far longer lasting than Gnome. Maybe Miguel does deserve the award, but imho, not yet.
BEGIN PARANOIA
I think Miguel's addition to this list is mostly for show...and if he wins, that this entire thing will be something to give a big "pffffttt" to the KDE team from the "hardcore" GPL people. Gnome, imho, isn't worthy of praise yet, at least in comparison to the progress made by the KDE team.
END PARANOIA
I'm not sure who John Guilmore is (please don't hurt me!), but if someone can explain his contribution, I would be more than willing to reexamine my evaluation. --------------------------
- Are there any tutorials for QT/KDE programming? - Is there anyway Joe User can help with KDE2? - Are there any aspects of GNOME you wish KDE had? - Many aspects of the KDE interface have a WinNT look and feel(imho). Any particular reason why you went with that style as to MacOS or BeOS? - Q3Test or UT?;-)
Thanks for a great UI... --------------------------
We all have heard a million times the "It's not the OS's problem. Its your install, or your hardware, or something, but not M$'s fault." This IMO is [...] completely wrong as well.
While I agree WinNT leaves much to be desired, in my expierence, this actually is true. At CMU, we have clusters with Sun, Linux, NT, and Mac boxes. In my expierence, the NT boxes are always extremely stable (on par with the Linux boxes), and are very responsive. Of course, a default install of NT right out of the box isn't that great, but I'd love to know exactly what CMU does to its NT boxes to keep them running so well for so long. --------------------------
In my expierence, the latest GNOME isn't that much better. It still get core dumps like mad, and for some reason, it can't draw pngs correctly(that's probably my fault though...I must have forgotten a./compile tag *somewhere*).
KDE, however, is quick, stable, and clean..yeah, its not the pretties thing, but it gets the job done...KDE 2 looks like it'll be prettier, though.
IMHO, just install gnome for the libs (can't live w/out gnomeicu!) use the apps that come with KDE, but run WindowMaker;-) --------------------------
(I don't mean to be a troll or flaimbait...at least the first one is something I've been wondering about...)
IE has access to all the hidden APIs and other good stuff that windows programs get to use So? Netscape has access to the Linux kernel and the source for X...why can NS make a Linux specific version of Navigator?
For one thing, having the browser so tightly tied into the operating system often causes the whole system to lock up when the browser crashes I've got IE5 on my Linux parition, and I use it frequently...last time it crashed was a few months ago, and it didn't take out Explorer (yes, I have the IE4 active desktop installed). Perhaps you have some other problem? Norton software (im my expierece) reduces the stability of a system 10-fold.
My opinion is that it's better to have a seperate browser and operating system You *can* install IE seperate from Windows (don't install the desktop update from IE4)
Ok, now my opinion - yes, MS hasn't been the nicest of companies...but, imho, their browser has beaten Netscape (at least, for now). --------------------------
Can we really say this is unfair, though? Considering that the mail gets through (most of the time;-) aren't they doing a good job with what they charge per letter?
I guess, maybe a better question would be, how much do other coutries charge for stamps/shipping and how good is the quality? --------------------------
don't load the components you don't want (this is the first browser in which you will *ever* have the opportunity to do that)
From what I remeber, both IE and NS (for Windows at least) give you some ability to control what you install...NS seems a bit less willing to do so, though (whatever happened to Standalone Navigator?). --------------------------
Doh...forget about that. That worked well, but mostly because it didn't take itself seriously, imho. Fantasy based works tend to take themselves very seriously - something which (again, imho) does a nice job of scaring non-geek types away. --------------------------
Ok, I had bad expierences w/ D&D - but still, you can actually make a movie out of a game like this? What's next, Chutes & Ladders: The Motion Picture?
Hollywood is running out of ideas...its one thing to be making films about cartoons (Inspector Gadget comes to mind), but *this*??
Not meant to be flamebait...but I'm putting on my asbestos tightie whities just in case. --------------------------
