Personal preference, I realise, but I have found Proteus to be much more stable and reliable, and the interface/feature set (such as the messaging centre etc), far superior to Fire.
I find it interesting that the spread of Instant Messaging usage is so different than what I've personally noticed.
Maybe it's a Canadian thing, but my experience (and everyone I know seems to be the same has been that the popularity of the messengers goes like this:
ICQ
MSN
All the others. I don't even know a single person who has everused AIM, Yahoo, Jabber or Gadu-Gadu.
FWIW, I use Proteus a very well-written Mac client that does ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Yahoo Japan, AOL IM, AOL IM(Oscar)-whatever that is, Jabber and Gadu-Gadu.
Yes, it's shareware, and no, it's not GPL'd, but it's still damn good software!
Does anyone have any sort of stats on regional/national usage of different IMs? Since your IM of choice is largely based on how many of your friends use a given network, it's not totally illogical that it might vary from place to place.
I have to be naive, but what was so awful about Bonzai Buddy? I have a Mac, so I was never fooled by the "fake dialogue box" ads, and I now use A Mozilla derivative anyway, but I'm just curious as to what was so bad about the software itself?
I'm not trying to troll or anything, I hoestly don't know what the problem was. Was it spyware? Did it refuse to uninstall?
I can't wait unti the PSX has an office suite and CUPS print drivers.
Why? I know it's cool to hack things together and all, but if you want something that has an office suite and print drivers, how about (gasp) a computer?
What's this insistence on using everything as a computer that can be? It's a game machine. Play games on it. Then go out and buy a cheap computer for your office suite and printing.
From the looks of this system the best you could call it is renting, and that's a stretch.
That was the point of this story. They're comparing Microsoft's new and wonderful approach (which, as you say, is renting at best), to Apple's, wherein you do in fact own the music (you can copy it to an iPod, burn it at will, and listen to it on several computers.
What this slashdot article was asking is whether it's worth the cost associated with the iTunes music store to own the songs, or whether you're better renting them from Microsoft, albeit at a lower initial cost.
Well, pixel sizes are often a more consistent way to do the layout. The biggest problem is that Mac web browsers generally assume that the screen is 72dpi, while Windoze assumes 96dpi. I don't know about Linux.
The end result is that stuff designed with point sizes on a Windoze machine ends up reallytiny on my Mac!
802.11b is billed as 11, but it can only do 5. Make sure that you compare apples to apples. Even if the actual throughput is 10 Mbps, it's still double 802.11b's actual throughput.
Well, yes, but since the actual throughput of 'g' tended to be in the range of 20-25mbps, double the throughput is still a letdown from 5x the throughput, which is what it was initially billed at.
I realise this is probably brought on by a big long debate on The Matrix, but does this not seem like a really useful first step to designing a Matrix-like system? Set something up so that everyone's life details are tracked in minute detail for later use. Like, in a big global simulation of the planet?
Woah.

I haven't spent the time to run the probabilities or anything, but I think that the Canadian and American) government should eliminate the penny and the dime. With no pennies, the most you will ever lose is 2.5 cents (who cares? It's worth it not to have to deal with pennies), and the missing dimes could be made up with nickels. You'll never get more than 20 cents back in dimes, so you'll never get more than 4 nickels.
Of course, it would be awhile before we could get cash registers that could round up to the nearest 5 cents or so, but it would lighten the load in my pockets (giving me more room for gadgets).
Just remember, there used to be a half-penny in many countries, but it was eliminated due to almost-complete lack of worth. Now it's time for the penny to follow that same path.
Of course, in Canada, we get to deal with coins for our $1 and $2 denominations.
For all thsoe complaining about the price, remember this is basically v1.0 of Applemusic.com. My prediction is that as it progresses, we'll start to see cheaper prices, and varied prices.
ie: There are some songs I'd gladly pay $1 for, others which I wouldn't (but would buy for a quarter) etc.
I'd bet that we'll see different songs having different prices eventually
I love the new iPods (thinner=better, although I'm torn about the new button location)
The only downside is that yesterday $399US would get me a 20GB iPod, whereas today it will only get me a 15GB iPod (albeit one that plays AACs, is smaller, lighter and has a cool dock).
I still dig the iPod, and have been waiting for this new version (I will now buy one), but this one little thing is a shame.
That's pretty funny! A lot of the stuff at the various jodi.org sites don't work in Mozilla, because I have javascript's abaility to open new windows or resize (or move) current windows disabled, to stop pop-ups. The computer in control indeed!
Of course, the network went down the other day, and I was rendered useless for a day, but still...
The venerable old CapsLock key. Still wildly in use on eBay, and message boards everywhere! Hey, why say "Info CD on free iPod info" when you can say "INFO CD ON FREE IPODS!!!!!!!!!"?

Not that I'm biased! Just look at my nick!

It might server me? Wow, now there's a Freudien Slip
Def'n: Freudian slip: Wen you say one thing, and you mean your mother

For you MacHeads out there, I use the program that ships on the MacAddict CD. It's a little shareware app called DiskTracker
You just pop in your disk, drag it to the disktracker windows, and it creates a catalogue of all the files. Which is the searchable etc.
On my iPod, silly.

Wait a minute! "rat built machine"? That doesn't sound right. Somebody check the script!

D'oh! /me smacks myself.
That's right, the iPods I was looking at on eBay were not retail! Who knew?

Keanu Reeves on Celebrity Jeopardy:
Trebek: "And You wagered eleventy billion dollars. That's not even a real number"
Reeves "...yet."
Trebek "Simply stunning."
Of course, I guess that's better than French Stewart's $Texas wager.
Why do I feel like there's a Captain Kirk Joke in there? Something to do with missles and alien bodies perhaps?
