my careers advisor said i should be a central heating engineer.
being classically British, its not advised to give kids ideas above their station.
there are worse places to live, not everything is perfect, but nowhere is
i could live in the states where i probably couldn't afford health care, or in saudi where my wife and kids would be second class citizens because of their gender...or in soviet russia where <insert joke here>
just get used to it, because until your someone else's boss, your's will get the praise for your work
incidentally crap rolls down hill
keep all your emails, if your asked to do something, ask for it in an email. always cover your arse, nobody will do it for you, they're too busy covering their own
its taken them a bit to see they where wrong when they put them in kernel space but didn't they do this on nt(4 i believe) because it was to slow otherwise?
mind you with the specs needed for a vista machine, whos going to notice......
bill thingi that wrote the article likes to jump on the latest band wagon the bbc send him. from his previous articles, he has scant grasp of the realties of the tech world. he gives his 2 pence worth to the bbc so they can publish another "the sky is falling" piece.
yes perfect software is possible, but you can't possibly afford it
civil engineers do not build perfect bridges, they build them within tolerances. plus you don't normally build a bridge with a box of millions of different bits. you get your lot of girders and cable etc. which are all relatively speaking the same.
Ian has been doing this type of SGI work for 10+ years now.
When I was a University he was the SGI tech, and basical did SGI a truck load of grafting for nothing. They even ofered him a job in California (I suppose that beats Preston hands down).
He has been in contact with lots of people down the years, sys admins at NASA, people in the US DOD, who wouldn't / couldn't tell him what they did. He generaly became the guy to go to when you had an SGI related problem.
Its generaly a shame he's been craped on by his employers University of Central Lancashire and Salford University
windows on ppc? the only way that's going to happen is xbox2. would i use it? my manager said all microsoft products should be taken away from me, i said please take them now!!
so NO! why would moving the platform make windows any better?
its time to go get your head seen to before your brain goes pop
probably a sneaky little trick like Intel use with the miraculous HT technology
i suppose it doesn't really matter if its pin compatible or not, Apple will just have to whack out a new motherboard.
Its not like you can just go and build yourself a laptop from bits you can buy off the shelf (granted if you had the will you could but why would you unless you have access to necessary fabs, to make your contraption a laptop), an I assume Apple stick a fair markup on the powerbooks any way, so they could probably eat any initial development costs and keep thing at relatively the same price.
theres an O2 dead spot in my kitchen and living room (far side of bolton), if I want a signal in the house, i have to be upstairs pointing my phone at the window or in the loft. mind you its a pretty effective way of stopping people phoning you, I get just enough signal to get texts. pick the phone up and aw damn it the signal dropped and i get a bit of piece;-)
yes i know i could just switch it off, but i'm way to lazy and forgetful.
"Why do the police carry weapons?" because the scum they have to deal with sometimes do, in the UK the armed police are a special division, normal officers carry pepper spray and a baton, a lot less lethal than your average American cop carrying a semi auto pistol. "Why do we have militaries?" because we live in countries that have differing opinions on how to live. if we all agreed on everything it might be more peaceful but we would be living in a different world, unfortunately we're all human here.... nearly.
Magna Carta was a step in the right direction for the nobility. It was basically to stop the king for demanding war tax and service whenever he felt like it.
a serf is someone who is in effect owned by the lord of the manor. in effect a slave. they work for the lord, they pay their wages directly to the lord (yes thats the right way around) and the lord can demand that they work for him for free for up to 6 days a week (something like that).
brining all these historical references into a discussion is all well and fine, if you know the basis of them.
no email at work all day, i've just checked in and its still not back up:-))) the phones died at about 1300, for some reason we can't even do internal calls, could be because our switch was shipped with the ark.
such a nice quiet day..........
heres hoping they take all week to get our building back on line.
the web retailers in the us seem to have a realy strange attitued to selling to anywhere but their own back yard.
i've tried to get hold of a case of jolt in the uk, it like trying to milk a nat (no not NAT).
there are plenty of people who'll sell you a case, but only if you live in us/canada.
anyone would think i was trying to traffic drugs (although i've not tried, buying a bit of the white powder from over the pond would probably be easier).
there's nothing wrong with having a policy of letting funds clear before shipping to international customers. the only problem with doing that though is people tend to be a bit nervous of shelling out for something that won't be sent untill their money has already been taken.
In the end I've found that project managers couldn't give a rats arse how many lines of code or how the hell you manage to do the work, as long as its in on time and hasn't caused any undue payments e.g. overtime etc. For all they care, you could have had a pit of slaves being tortured for a week, but the code is in and working.
Mind you, if you bother to even try and explain how you did it or what the problem is, pm's usually start getting a very glazed over look in their eyes...
theres talk of sea rise within 100 years, if it dosn't happen within my life time, then it will within my kids (when i have some). if bits of the coast start getting submerged then some of you may not mind, but when its your entire country thats underwater (.tv) and you have to find a new home in a new country then you'd be concerened about the rate the levels are rising. and as for co2 encouraging plant growth, well bugger me if i'd prefer to continue breathing, than wait an see if any other plants can take up the slack when there's no more rain forest.
theres nothing wrong with me, its everyone else

let the flames ensue........
i seem to remember a news story when marconi went bust that the only orders they had in was for some new bt switches, could be mistaken though
;-}
wouldn't be the first time
the chances of getting wireless links running are somewhere in the same regons of finding mice living on a diet of cheese and beer on the moon
the area thats been hit is roughly 60+ miles end to end, thats just the local stuff never mind the slight disruptions caused as a nock on effect
up until recently they bought them from marconie
you have my permission to keep them :-))
