Actually, it's just the opposite - if it's a computer it's taxed less than a game system in most countries. In fact, the some of the euro models of the PS2 came with a CD with BASIC on it, because most tarriff laws state that something is a computer if it includes a programming language.
I personally think that this box would kick some serious ass as a nice portable system to take with you on vacation.
I don't know what's up, be it a pre-emptive downing to weather a slashdotting or what, but when I try to pull up the link to d/l the app, I get the good ol' 404. Does someone have a correct link here, or have I just been thrown into the twilight zone?
Yeah, you can run gnome on windows, it was discussed here a while back. It's probably not running the latest version of helix/ximian/whatever they want to call it this week gnome, but they've got an older version running at least.
I'm not saying that honeypot systems stress a network anymore or less than a standard system. All I'm saying is that a honeypot system is a more controlled environment in which to study a hacker "under glass", so to speak; perhaps using the honeypot to study a hacker so that the implementors of a honeypot are better prepared to protect the real network. A honeypot type system could also be used to experiment with rolling out new network security procedures and or computer systems, to see if the new procedures/systems are better suited to protecting your particular clients.
RTA. The whole point of something like this is to see how real 31337 types act on real hardware, simply because you can have real lags without delay loops, etc, and to see if they exploit unknown/difficult to copy bugs.
No, this is not like your so-called "safety mobile". This is more like an automotive crash test in which they get a production line car, ram it into a wall, and see how it breaks. Yeah, all the security studies in the world will "prove" that your network security tactics are up to snuff, but when it comes down to it, a semi-controlled test of situations closer to that found in the real world can teach you a lot more than having a good security policy.
If it's true, which I can't check as the site is currently being slashdotted, then it seems to me that this is a clear violation of the GPL because of the lack of source code. Anyone with evidence to confirm/deny this?
I do the same exact thing. Usually when I'm surfing for the sake of surfing, I won't click on banners, 'cuz the banners are 999 times out of 1000 unrelated to the topic at hand. However, I will remember the site, and when I am ready to buy a dvd/cd/book/pet fox/etc, I'll remember the site, and maybe give it a bit higher priority. Of course, if the banner pisses me off, like banners often do, I'm less inclined to view their sites
Though I'm agreeing with you on the banner clickthrough rebates. Maybe put a special discount code on the banner to get a free upgrade go second day shipping when you use the code. Just something so that they can track the true utility of banners, instead of thinking they're useless because no one clicks through.
Probably not. The program probably checks for the existance of certain routines the whackrovision module provides, installs the module if it's not already present (which implies at least part of the program is probably SUID root), and bombs out if it's not there. Of course, as with all my wild specuations, I could be all wet.

What you've got to do is simple. Make as much noise about this incident as possible. Pester newspeople until they return your calls, talk with the ACLU, send out press releases, call in radio talk shows, picket, place leaflets around your town, anything to garner attention. The best thing to do is to simply make these people's lives so miserable in dealing with this incident that they don't do anything as foolish again. Remember, the squeaky wheel is the one that gets the grease.
Like I said, you just broadcast the requests for blocks over the network. You request gets filtered through the nodes to the the sender and appropriate action is taken.
UDP. It's connectionless, and the IP headers can be spoofed. If you send the indivudual block requests over the anonymous network, it'll be damn near impossible to trace.
Actually, they break it up at the plus because certain email programs (netscape is one, IIRC) use any info before the plus to route it to a specific email folder, so you can have for example funny_jokes+tod@somedomain.tld, and anything sent to that addy will be sent to the funny_jokes folder. Now, a lot of people give out their email , including some here at/., addy as trash+whatever_their_username_is, so that the spam goes straight into the bit bucket. So, the spammers, figuring that they are so SMRT, wipe off everything to the plus, and send the email to the general delivery addy.

Hey, I know, but I love argueing. Give me any topic, and if I'm in the right mood, I'll throw up a convincing argument that runs counter to society's accepted belief.
Besides, 2+2 does equal 5, if the values of two are sufficiently large enough.
IKIHBT, but sorry, better luck next time. I am a free spirit, and I also embrace technology. The palm pilot that is currently in my pocket is used for an address book, and date planner, but also as a little notebook that I can write down the fleeting poetic thoughts as they come in, instead of rushing to a computer/notebook/whatever to jot them down, and hope that the brilliance of the moment is not lost. Computers are simply tools, and can inspire true brilliance.
Probably an astute observation. Since this is all about the union sheeple trying to get a couple extra bucks, it'll end when the corps can cut them out of the loop. Of course, I'm willing to wager dollars to doughnuts that we'll see this issue again when the unions and the broadcasters work out the next contract. Unions hate the notion that someone can make a living without the union getting "their" cut (I never realized how much unions were like the mob's protection schemes.)
Their lucrative subscriber base was purchased by AT&T, who promptly discontinued service. So, while I hope most people aren't as nasty as that, it could happen.
You did know that there is a HUGE number of women who pay for college through starring in pornographic movies, exotic dancing, etc, right? Using their bodies, as you like to put it, allows them to make a decent paycheck for a few hours of work. These women aren't particularly ashamed of what they do, they're just more concerned about what the moron majority will do if they find out that they have decided to take their clothes off for a little extra money.
Also, you've obviously never seen the "Faces of Death" series. They have items in there much more disturbing than pornography, but it is legal.
Good riddance. Sex is perfectly natural, and it seems to me that the Christian religion has a dangerous obsession with opressing a very natural, very healthful act.
Also, is it just me, or does anyone else mentally substitute moron for wherever they see moral?
Probably an unbreakable habit, happens all the time when a product/company/whatever has a name change, is bought out, etc. I call Wienerschnitzel (it's a hot dog chain) der Wienerschnitzel, even though it hasn't had the der in it's name for a VERY long time. It just sounds more correct.
Uh, unless you are planing on reselling the matress, you can rip that tag off. Of course, if you do tear the tag off, you have to eat said matress, so YMMV.

Mandrake is not based on RedHat anymore. It may have been RH derived back in the day, but the last few versions have been totally independant from RH
