  1. Re:QNAP SoHo NAS on Best Home Network NAS · · Score: 1

Agreed! I just set mine up when my old PC died, transferring my 2 500GB RAID-1 drives to this bad boy. I was able to get it at newegg for $400 (the Pro model) and am happy. It unfortunately doesn't support NTFS write so I had to convert the drives to the native EXT3, so that took some time to copy my data to another drive and convert them, but after that I was up and running. Their forums (forum.qnap.com) are pretty good as are the support guys if you email them.

  2. Re:To advance, correct errors rather than drag it. on The Future of the PSP · · Score: 1

I really like my PSP. I am really happy with the half-dozen games I've sprung for so far, including Ace Combat X, Lumines, Exit, Wipeout Pure, and (somewhat ironically) Sega Genesis collection. I also like encoding my movies and tv shows for on-the-go viewing. The screen is still gorgeous and the system as a whole is perfect for bus rides, trips, and so on. I think the playa hatas out there haven't even played the PSP, much less spent any significant time with it. Yes, the current PSP does fall short of its potential and the next generation of PSP (if it ever gets made) does have room for improvement:

    - ditch the UMD (think of all the space inside the PSP's body that thing hogs!), and go flash-memory only (no mechanical HDD either)
    - add a second analog stick to the face (I see space down and to the left of the face buttons for one of those)
    - trim a few grams of weight, though I like the solid feel of the PSP
    - vastly improve the file system to be more flexible. The folder/file-naming is insane. If you have encoded a movie you will know what I mean
    - release more demos and freebies
    - more customization and cool tricks for the user interface screen, more external homebrew/application support
    - quicker boot-up or less stand-by power drain
    - more colors, scratch-resistance, and better speakers

Why oh why can't I be a product consultant??????

  3. Tired of the PC Arms Race on Old School Gameplay Collides With Modern Graphics · · Score: 1

I really, really want to play these games (and the others like them). I absolutely prefer PC 1st Person shooters over similar console games for the mouselook alone. But I just can't keep up with the hardware joneses any more. I had unacceptable framerates with Far Cry at average quality settings, for instance, on a P4E 3Ghz, 1GB ram, ATI AIW 9800, minimal processes running, and so on. I know that for the most part I will be sucking it up and moving to the new generation of consoles because I and my wallet are losing the PC arms race.

Overall I liked this movie. It just felt colder and more distant than the first one. Then again, I was pretty far away from the screen and way off to the side! :) Really though, they just threw a lot of stuff at the audience and left a lot hanging. This movie was definately a build-up for Revolutions. I do agree about the villians, though merovingian & company were pretty cool. Hopefully they makes a come-back. I also think that the directors (can't spell those names!) may have been a little too caught up in their technological triumphs.

Thanks for the great post! Here in the Pacific northwest (and of course other parts of the world) we have 2 other currently used energy sources that could also play a role (though they are limited in many ways): Hydro-electricty & Wind Power.

Neither are the prettiest things around (though certainly fascinating to look at), but they are relatively clean. I think that these 2 sources of energy could also help push the hydrogen economy along.

I'd certainly like to see a large number of alternative energies given serious government help. Hydrogen is wonderful, but we get so much free energy from the sun, wind, and water, it's a shame to not take advantage of that!

Of interest to this discussion from Defense Tech:

    HAMAS TOYS WITH DEATH
A leading Palestinian militant has been killed by, of all things, a remote-controlled toy plane. Hamas chieftain Nidal Farahat and others had been working on a way to load explosives onto such toys and use them as weapons of terror.

On Sunday, Farahat appeared to fall victim to his own designs. He and five other Hamas operatives died in a Gaza City car bombing. A toy plane was found inside the vehicle.

"This is an assassination done by Israel," Dr. Mahmoud al-Zahar, a leader of Hamas, told the New York Times.

In January, DebkaFile claimed that Yasser Arafat was arranging for the deployment of new weapons: "Model planes packed with explosives and operated by remote control."

Last month, Palestinian toy importers in Jerusalem and Ramallah were told to order hundreds of these toys for distribution to Palestinian children in hospitals. Subsidies from European Union member-governments could legitimately be allocated to this humanitarian purpose. The model airplanes were purchased in Europe and shipped quite openly to the Palestinian shopkeepers.

According to our sources, not a single toy reached an injured Palestinian child. The model planes were sent to Palestinian workshops for conversion into miniature air bombers with explosive payloads.

DebkaFile estimated that the modified toys could fly for about a kilometer, and an altitude of 300 meters.

  18. Re:Nike PSA - "64" on Portable MP3 Player w/ Unix Support? · · Score: 1

I definitely have to recommend against this player. This device epitomizes the "so close, yet so far" saying. I haven't tried any Linux software with it, but the Windows version is very bass-ackwards, requiring the creation of playlists instead of direct file addition. Likewise, the software is buggy and stalls out on WinXP very frequesntly.

I like the design and usability of the device, though it won't accept my officially supported 64MB Sandisk MMC. The construction is a little suspect with some superficial cracks developing. It also will drain the battery, even if it is in the off position (yes, I used the new firmware).

It is very useful for exercising because of its small size, but for the price, it leaves a lot to be desired. The service and support is a joke as well. This is from Rio/Sonicblue/whatever they are calling themselves these days, so it may or may not be represntative of their other products.
