    The problem prior to 9-11 isn't that terrorist activities were not detected, but that information was not propagated (i.e. left hand doesn't know what right hand is doing.) Information collection was NEVER the problem. Since 9-11 I cringe everytime I hear about how government wants to collect MORE information.

    Manufacturer won't release information on hardware. So the only way to find out how to interface with it is to reverse engineer the windows driver, a tedious enterprise. If it's really an issue, return the product and tell the retailer why it is being returned. Enough people doing that, the manfacturer will have to bend if it wants the business.

    Having worked as a tutor in my college days (some decade + change ago) at a four year school, some freshman were admitted lacking even understanding of fraction and basic algebra. I pretty much lost all respect for compulsive K12 education in US then.

    Of course, I am the one walking around saying 'I has a college educations,' but I digress...

    With $105 billion in this type of crime in 2005, I'm glad the Department of Homeland Security has had their budget cut to $16 million. That should stop those crooks!
    After all, the ability to monitor at will of all forms of communications between every American resident and "potential terrorists," is FAR more important than such trivial matter as preventing identity thieft or credit fraud. (Yes, I am being sarcastic.)

    I recall US based companies used to do this too (in the 50's?) Somewhere along the line they just stopped. In a way I think it's sad because to me it mean State side companies decided at some point dream of what future could hold isn't important anymore. Now it's always about near term profit, stock valuation, what will get the executives the fattest bonuses...

    Note that they do not guarantee the cargo hold is heated or pressurized, so I wouldn't ship anything with their service that does not react well to extreme cold or hard vacuum.

    A lot of quirks in programming langauges don't show until one is actually trying to code something useful with them. More likely than not, the said comment by the Apple Egomaniac (tm) originated from opinion of MANGLERs in his organization; since they tend to quantate work performed by coders in terms of number of lines. If enough MANGLER said to him "my coders write more lines of code in Objective C than in it's not so far fetched that the Apple Egomaniac (tm) would conclude Objective C is a better languge to code in.

If a company within the U.S. solicits sales through an overseas professional telemarketer, that U.S. company may be liable for any violations by the telemarketer. The FTC can initiate enforcement actions against such companies.
    People reading engineering specs all day would quickly noticed that may and shall mean very different things.

    This sort of things always worries me because it reminds me of an particular episode of X Files where Walter Skinner nearly died after being infected by nano machines. Imagine being able to craft it to target specific person and no other. People can be killed or made to suffer without ever knowing who the perpetrator was.

    Shouldn't we stop for a second and consider the negative impact this sort of things could have on our world?

    In their mind, the entire fiasco boils down to the following --

    a. How to hide the DRM software better so it will not be detected NEXT TIME.
    b. How to silence the whistle blower so that if line item a fails, the word never leaks out.
    c. How to fabricate pausable deniablity if the word leaked out despite line item b.

    In summary, for the media company, the entire affair isn't about what wrong they inflicted on their PAYING CUSTOMERS, but about how to contain the situtation and continue to "protect THEIR rights."
