    He was getting prepaid cards, where there tends to be an extra fee for the card itself, can't compare that to a subscription.

    In general though, I find connectivity in the US to be expensive. I pay $55 for uncapped 1000/1000mbit fiber to my home, and about the same for my mobile connection, which has a 40GB data limit, and free calls and text,and I can use it in 47 countries right now without any additional charge, the US included.

    There is nothing called "computing" anymore, at least not if a human is involved.

    I'm all for bringing back modems, bbs'ers, terminate and high memory, man I missed the days when Windows shipped without tcp/ip!

  4. I waited for some time for a new mac mini as I needed a computer for my son, but got an Intel NUC in the end. It does feel like Apple has given up on stationary computers, but lets hope this means a new lineup. I think they badly need a new mac mini if they want to stay be a real force in this space.

    Why are you putting scientists in quotation marks? Do you believe them to be wrong about their findings?

    I was listening to the opening speech of the Nobel price ceremony, and this part springs to mind.
    Leading politicians - both in Europe and the United States - are winning votes by denying knowledge and scientific truths. Populism is widespread and is reaping major political successes.
    The grim truth is that we can no longer take it for granted that people believe in science, facts and knowledge.

    The point is trying to do a "This must match this other thing precisely or it loses," is silly, and is generally only done by fanboys when they are trying to make the alternatives lose and trying to justify their product as the "right" choice.

    This is absolutely not true, I think that a lot of people dont really care what OS they run, since most things run on most platform, and I can notice more and more that people don't really care about the OS.
    I found this post very interesting because I have been asking myself this question. Having used a macbook pro as my main work computer for the past 5 - 6 years now, which windows laptop can replace it? Since pretty much everything is cross platform, I don't see a reason to keep spending the amount Apple wants for laptops.
    I could read the specs or go on price, but what Apple offers is good performance and great build quality, and I really want to know which windows laptops offer the same.

    I am happy about this post and am going to check out the suggested Dell and HP laptops.

  9. It's a really good ISP and everyone I know who can use them, is using them. Their argument against this type of companies, who basically give themselves the right to ask random people for arbitrary sums of money, is spot on. Registering spridninskollen.org was a great move. However, the trademark thing is stupid and it won't result in anything negative for spridninskollen, and they should drop that part.

  11. Putting aside "we-will-all-be-replaced-by-robots-soon", this is actually a good idea, and the company making them has the right strategy; much better to charge an hourly rent instead of a huge upfront fee!

    Apart from the employment issue, I can see a lot of benefits, robots aren't racist and robots aren't rude, and I assume security to actually be better with the robots in place.

  13. This was up for debate in EU a while back, and it was the british who blocked it. However, with the panamapapers being leaked, and Cameron's own involvment, it might not be so easy to block it this time.

    The timing isn't an accident, and the british commissioner leading it isnt an accident either, its all designed to maximize the chances of it going through.

    I think this is a good start, you pay taxes where you earn the money...

  15. Finally someone stands up to these big energy companies, the co2 emissions from the sun far exceeds anything produced by burning oil, and the radiation have caused massive problems with equipment!

    There are legitimate reasons to take in foreign workers, that help fuel the economy and keep other jobs in the country; making the assumption that every visa given is also a displaced worker is just wrong.
    Even Ted Cruz isn't asking for a complete stop to the visas, which indirectly is what you are asking for.

    Limits its one thing, blocking them is another!

    The problem with in-app purchase is that it is destroying the games. I agree with this article.
    I think the suggestion by the EU, that you cannot label apps with in-app purchases as free, is really good!

    You may not be in their target audience, but I am, and I am not "a console gamer who cannot be bothered to build a gaming rig". Instead, I'm an "old" gamer who now has kids and not enough space to have a room filled with computers... like I used to.

    A machine underneath the TV, where I can play the games I like (got 100+ steam games) on my TV, by hiding away a little box, is really appealing to me.
    Currently I have a laptop for gaming that I hook up to the TV (unless I play directly on it but 17" is not enough), but still, playing with a wireless keyboard / mouse isn't the best. I like the steam controller idea. I like a machine meant to be used on the TV, I like the idea of playing the games I already have.

    That's what is inaccurate.

    I agree that it is inaccurate to say that Apple Maps is poor, I'd say its a compile pile of sh*t!

    Perhaps you can live with the fact that Apple thinks that the Washington monument has been moved, or that the Berlin wall has been resurrected in the middle of Montreal, but when they "forget" the second biggest city in Sweden entirely (Gothenburg), I ask you, is not "very poor" an understatement?

    Total previous budget 3.5 million SEK, new budget for today 400 million SEK - no anomaly there...

    3.5 million? really? this just shows that slashdot mods really dont care about facts and are happy to mod post with no reference with completely made up numbers.

    Here are the actual numbers ... and for those of you who don't read swedish, Sweden has given between 150 - 200 million a year since 2009, and the 400 million allocated now is for 2 years, so theres no change there at all from last year.
