or try seaching google for everquest wall bug , I meet alot of people EQ who have had problems with the wall bug.
On the close-to-level-up "feature", I cant find any documentation on this issue. But, I know alot of people who still plays EQ. Which all agree with me that mobs frenzies more when you are 1-2 blue bubbs from leveling up.
I just wanted to comment that realtime graphics will be behind prerender graphics as long as there is a polygon limits/shaderlimits etc etc. You can do ANYTHING in prerenders, you cant with RT graphics. Not for a looong time.
Maybe the next radion will be able to render ONE pretty looking eye as the one we are seeing in the artice, but could it render saaay 1000 of them in realtime? No.. i dont think so..
Large scenes will always chough in RT, and i would personally Loooooove to se the gfx chip which would render a scene with loads of visible light, polygons gallore and other effects. Say, a photorealistic soccer stadium for example.
This is doable in with 3d rendering software, but NOT in realtime.
"RenderMan® Release 11 significantly extends the range of creative possibilities available to rendering professionals through its support for ray tracing, global illumination and deep shadows. These important new features, combined with significant performance gains, represent a major enhancement to the 3D rendering system widely recognized as the industry standard for film and video production."
And btw. if anything is nonsense, its you claim that 95% of all movies are rendered with renderman.
take a look at: http://www.pixar.com/renderman/artist_tools/what sr enderman/movies.html
also notice that they STATE if the render isnt used, like on 2002s finalfantasy. Which used renderman as you can see on the top link

i was trying to be funny =D I didnt thaught that a 1908 gun would have eighter a magazine nor a chamber, they useally used rotating barrels backthen didnt they?
EQ is (as other inhere already commented) pretty much a drug, I tried playing it for a while(about 2months). They do everything to make you go after "that next level".
But got fed up with all the crap they try to pull on you, example, if you killed a monster inside a dungeon and the monster fellinto the wall. Sometimes, you would'nt get xp. Another player told me that this was "the wall bug", and it had been around for ages. Ok, software is buggy and patches sometimes are slow. BUT, Varant just neglected this for a loooong time because it was good for them(less xp, more gametime). Other bugs like undercons etc. was fixed ligthing fast.
Another very very wierd thing, that just seems generally accepted (nobody can tell you why). But monsters goes into a berserker attack mode, when you are very close to leveling. Even monsters which are relatively calm, and normally would have to be attacked to fight. Just attacks you.
Varant is simply a pusher, doing everthing they can to hook people on their drugs.
But as far as i can understand from the article, they still are'nt raytracing the light. Which is oftenly used in movies etc. for über precise ligting effects.
Also, most professional 3d renderes are already offering radiosity rendering. Which are even more realistic/precise.
I cant grasp how people think that realtime rendering will get on par with pre-renderings? The pre-rendering programs are evolving to you know, all these gamers suggesting that RT graphics soon will be as realistic as prerenders are kinda like the 4 year kid who thinks he will be older than you in 18 years.
Doesnt this leave a open spot in the market for a computer manufactor how doesnt preinstall the doze at all?
Most people i know who buy Dell, Compaq or whatever, NEVER wants to pay for the OS. They always install their own, copied version. I know this is wrong, but EVERYBODY does it. The reason my granddad choosed a dell was actually because he could get it without a OS, and save money. Note that one thing these very "stupid" end-users are good at, is finding the cheapest possible machine. I'll bring out the granddad example again, he wrote down everything he could have removed from the configuration. And called me to check if they was needed, and yes, he even asked about the monitor(he caught up quickly when i started laughing though =D). People are cheap for the most part, especially when it comes to some thing that for them is nice-to-have, not need-to-have.
So, why isnt there a BIG iron supplier who only sell machines without the OS? This would mean no consulting department(no windows consulting department anyways), so how important is the consulting for the iron suppliers? I fear that profit on delivering machines are so small that the consulting/support actually is the "larger" sourse of income?
I love to answer spam with really really lame messages, do your best to freak them out(if possible, try and fool them into thinking that you are a complete maniac).
Im not sure how effective it is to spam back at the spammers(most use anon email accounts), but it sure is fun. I actually got a couple of replys. One guy had spamed me with a mail trying to sell some sort penis enlargement pill.
I replied that i was hung like a horse, and it actually was a problem. Then explaining what a huuge problem it was for me, since i could only sleep with girls who have given birth to 3-4 kids. In the end i asked for a pill to make my penis SMALLER. Heres the fun stuff, he freaking replied on the mail. Telling me that he HAD a pill that made penis smaller, and how i could buy it.
I replied with a "christ, you're a idiot" and never heard from him again =D
I've also used this tatics before with a very "aggresive" danish religious movement(withnesses of jehova), who spends most of their time going from door to door trying to make people join them.
I told them i thought that Mary was artificially inseminated by aliens, and therefore our religon was something created by a higher race to make us calmer. It freaked the fuck out of them, and im pretty sure that they will NEVER knock on my door again.
1. Come up with a number taken from the moon Eeeh dude, I didnt look at the moon and imagine it. I just tried to think about it, and then maked a guess.
As I see it, the only software that could'nt be easily replaced by OSS conterparts would be higly specific stuff like very advanced math/physics software etc.
I think the most installed software in most schools would be office and explorer.
2. Bullshit about why and what based on the number from the moon. The bullshit was primarily based on the software i saw used on a education i attended.
I dont get it, about 70%(wild guess, i have nothing to back thit up with) of the software used in schools could be replaced by OSS software.
As an example, I want to use the most commonly taken IT education in Denmark. It takes two years, with intensive training in c++/conceps/etc. They used Borland or VC++ in most of the schools offering it, Access for database course(some of the bigger Colleges like Copenhagen Business College where i took the classes use MySql though, hurraaz for them..) and visio in some of the system design courses.
Why not just use GCC, MYSQL and OpenOffice? Then schools would'nt have to endorse copying of software, I heard this in two separate classes. Not that the teach was telling students to "just go copy it", instead they used phrases like "You could problertly loan one from one of you classmates".
I think thats kinda ironic, on a programming education. They basically teach its ok to "loan" other peoples stuff if you need it..
It was just my way of saying i think he deserved to do some time, ofcourse i dont litteraly hope that the guy gets raped.
But, I think he should deserved to be punished. Not because of the piracy. Heck, i dont think there are many people on slashdot who never copied anything. BUT, theres a suttle difference in making copies for homeuse(and maybe even some of your friends) and selling it in a store to make a profit. That a weebit to asian for my taste =)
",and the Free Software movement in the gun sights"
Ok, who's holding that gun then?
Free software has been around for as long as I can remember, long before I used linux. I got PD/Freeware stuff for my amiga, I dont think people will ever stop making freely available software. Not even if your extremely weird goverment overthere finds out to make some law, that could be life hard for GNU/OSS and other enemies of software coraporation. And this could actually be plausiable, since it seems like that govement of yours likes to protects its investors(investors, lobbiest whatever =).
So is the govement holding the gun? I dont get it =)
If yes, fire away. I dont think ANY thing would kill Freesoftware, the only thing that could happen was it would be criminalized to use it.
Seriusly, Its got to stop! I dont want talking paperclips telling me how to open a file, but it seems like alot of users are screaaaming for a easier useable linux destop. I saw a SERIUS suggestion about a "I want to.." menu, in a realted slashdot story.
I see where this is going, you want them to put a talking foot in my next gnome!! Well, I wont have it!
All crap aside, do we really want linux to become a YABOS(Yet Another Bubblegum Operating System)?
Now, I know that the main argument for ease of use is:
"If we build it they will come!"
Meaning that alot of people seem to think that if linux become more userfriendly, every office would install it. And therefore, all the office workers will use it at home. And, us linux geeks will finally get to play the newest games/cool macromedia application that does my work for me.
I agree with the fact that a larger userbase would lead to more commercial software(u know u want those games), I just dont agree with the way in getting the larger user base.
I find it extremely ironic, that the opensource development community. Seem to want to please the coraporation users, those are the primary advocates for ease of use u know. So, their poor worker cant blame ANY missed deadline problems with their computer.
Now, people will probertly scream "well what about my grandma who cant record a program on her VCR, she should be able to use linux to".
Yes, she should. And if she wanted to, she could probertly learn. The problem is, she dont want to. Jessus crist, who stupid do you think people can be. The reason she "cant get the VCR to record", is because its easier to act like a retard and have other people do it. If people say that they cant do something that trained monkeys could do, they are being lazy. Its that simple.
Remember the good old AMIGA? It was'nt really a userfriendly OS. And the only amigas that "snuck" into workplaces was boxes for graphics work, but still. But still, the box, dispite not being userfriendly, noor a commonly used officebox. It was for a very long time a dominant OS in the homemarked, simply because people USE their computers. And a amiga was usefull, in many ways. It showed how strong the hobbiest usergroups are, the AMIGA was used by hobby musicians and artists everywhere.
Thiese markeds are the one that needs pleasing on linux, we already have a really good hold in techtypes. Now we need the more creative ones, they bring numbers you know. And numbers means games.. eerh.. serius apps from whomever.
The saddest part is, programs like Cubase and Logic(Which are the two widest used professional music software out there) are'nt that complicated. Ofcourse, you need a lot a really smart people to make a peice of software like that. But, imagine that one of the two large desktop project had choosen to do this instead?
Then, by now the software would probertly be on par with cubase/logic. And would have created way more new users for Linux than eighter of the two desktop projects have done in the same time.
You see, people dont use computers for their desktops. They use it for the apps, and I assure you that if a guy could save the 1000Euro licence for cubase, they would just learn to use what ever desktop that available on the plaform of this free software.
Now, before ripping me apart because of my poor spelling/grammar. If you want me to take it seriusly, you need to write me on danish;)
In a nutshell, GPUs are outdated. Remeber back in April 99, when nvidia announced the Geforce256, the first chip shipping with hardware transformation and lighting. They called this a gpu, since then, various chipmanufactors have extended the "GPU" instructionsets to include stufflike AA/Filters/texture comp./etc etc etc.
But, the successor for thiese kinda have already been created. 3Dlabs have introduced the VPU, which is bacially a GPU with a codeable instructionset.
Why sit around and wait for somebody else to compile the images for you? Use a source based disto dammit, one that grabs the source to your system and then compiles it. As other people commented before, most linux apps are allready 64bit ready. Because most needs to be compileable on MIPS/ALPHA/SPARC platforms.
GCC(and binutils) supports compiling to x86-64 , this is still experimental though. But searching/looking abit in the mailinglist archives @ x86-64.org show that stuff like qt allready are comiling fine, only needing a wee-change in the makefile(Link).I think thats quite impressive, and im willing to bet good money that GCC has production class x86-64 support by the time the processor is actually available to buy.
So, armed with gcc and a version of Gentoo, Linux From Scratch or any other sourcebased disto that supports compiling the entire system from scratch. You will beable to create/compile your very own system, which can be WAY more optimized that anything a vendor does(i cant really see how its possible for a precompiled kernel images cant be optimized to a system).
The the only bad thing about thiese kinda of disto s is that big large packages as x/gnome/openoffice/what-ever takes for ever to compile. But on 64bit processor, who cares =)
