First, i dont understand why some people think its a bad idea nvidia are doing Cg. One of the goals of Cg is easier crossplatform development.. thats a noble cause if any =D
Secondly, my bet is OpenGLs shading language and Cg will eventually merge.
and notice this part: Compatibility with DX is very important, but they're willing to weigh advantages of changes vs. cost. Cg and the proposed "OpenGL 2.0" language are similar but not identical; both look like C, and both target multiple underlying execution units. Interfaces, communication between nodes, and accessing state across nodes are different. It's very late, but not too late to contemplate merging the two languages.
Both MythTV and Freevo are really coming along nicely, the already challenge most commercial PVR system in the feature department. Both projects seem to be moving forward in a healthy speed, and projects of this type are bound to get a lot of support from geeks at home. So, the future looks bright for the OS PVR systems i reckon.
But personally Ill be waiting a little while longer before i make my own little PVR box, im waiting for the IvyTV project's drivers to mature some more. And then use a Hauppauge WinTV 350 as the base for my box, this will give me real time hardware mpeg-2 encoding/decoding. The IvyTV team are doing great, in record time they have a partly working driver and a plug in for mythtv. So i think its safe to say that within a years time well see a Video4Linux2 compliant driver with hardware encoding/decoding support from them.
So why do i want to encode to mpeg-2 anyways? I want to use mpeg-2 as the primary format on the box and divx as a "backup" format. Also with hardware mpeg-2 encoding, it should be possible for me to include a DVD burner and make it possible for me to record directly to a video dvd. Which would be really neat =)
I checked up and your completely right, i found this: Derek French: Line Producer multiplayer: BGx used DirectPlay and was at the mercy of that layer for multiplayer.
NWN uses a completly new/custom multiplayer layer (since it has to run across 4 platforms).
on neverwinter vault, so guess I was to quick on the directplay thing. The fact that the game required DirectX8.1 to run, AND most games today seem(I'd better be carefull now =) to use DirectPlay just made me think it used directplay.
But DirectX talk wasnt at all the point of my post, my point was simply that the people of bioware probertly is'nt "forrest gumps" as the comment i replied to suggested. And there was some logical explaination to why the linux client is delayed and directplay or not, im not willing to belive that the entire engine is ready to run on linux without any porting as the original post also suggested.
I think its a good example of the non-Microsoft propiertary stuff that is/can be ported to Linux and be a real benefit for companies wanting to port to Linux.
I was'nt trying to suggest that it was impossible to port, i was merely commenting the parent comment which suggested that it should'nt take as long time. I just feel we should be glad they are doing a port, instead of calling them forrest gumps because they dont give it to us fast enough.
I'm not a programmer, but this seems like such an easy task. They have the engine, the art, and the interfaces. The engine should be good to go.
What makes you think the engine is good to go? Eventhough bioware used OpenGL to render their graphics, they also used DirectSound, DirectInput and DirectPlay. All which would need ported to linux alternatives. Also, they wrote some opengl extensions for various effects like their (kinda cool btw) shadowing system. Who are to say if they are completely multiplatform.
The movies should be re-encoded into another format that plays natively in Windows and Linux. The interface should use wrappers..
A. I have a feeling that its not the encoding of fileformats thats holding back port.
B. Im a little confused about what you mean when you say "interfaces. If you mean the in-game interfaces, then they are most likely rendered by the engine(probertly by OpenGL, since they use a directx version without directdraw). If its the in-game interfaces youre talking about, they wont be a problem when the engine is ported.
Hell, even the wankers using WineX have been running NWN for a while.
I fail to see your point here, i've seen varoius of PC games under wine. Most of which arent being ported at all.
What does the fact that people can run the windows binaries under emulation have to do with the development of the linux binaries?
This should be a lesson for future projects. Don't try and bolt on functionality that was never intended. Either do it right (cross platform) from the start, or not at all.
How should this truely crossplatform development work then? DirectSound, DirectInput and DirectPlay are standard compontents in most games today, which crossplatform APIs should replace them? SDL is nice, but is just as its name implies a "Simple DirectMedia Layer". And is simply not as feature rich as its DirectX counterpart(especially in the sound area).
I think its important for us linux users to realise that currently, windows OWNS the PC gaming sector. They deliver what the gamecompaies want, a simple method of defining requirements for their game. The companies use DirectX and simply write on their box that you need a direct3d compatible gfx card, a directsound compatible soundcard etc etc. Also the windows/directx platform offers WAAAAAY more potential customers AND the option of porting very easily to the xbox.
I think we should be glad that some companies do ports, since linux has pretty much nothing to offer to gamedeveloping companies execpt alot problems for a very little marked (in gaming terms).
I'm not a cheap arse, aside from picking AMD over Intel for both cost and performance reasons. My fans cost quite a pretty penny. The processor still runs hot, and the box is still loud.
Define hot please? something must be wrong if it still runs to hot. Personally, I had a HUGE heat problem(couldnt compile anything over 20MB without the system overheating) with my current processor. Im using a old Athlon Thunderbird 1.1Ghz which are known to have problems staying cool. But after installing a decent Zallman cooler and some good termalpaste(artic silver).
I have'nt had a problem since(just for the record i also have two cabinet coolers in the box, but they have always been there. So they wherent the one responsible for fixing my heat problems), it even (to my suprise) made it through the heatwave we had in denmark this summer =)
Right now, after being on/used the entire day. My CPU temp is 43C. Which is nothing.
So my point, if your using a decent cooler on a AtlonXP (which should run cooler than the old thunderbirds) it should defently be possible to make your system free of heat issues.
Have you checked if your cooling paste covers the entire top of the processor core? If there is a little area thats not covered probertly, you will never make the processor run at normal temps.
Also I have a GF4ti4600 and four disks in the system, one is a 10K RPM SCSI. All these devices are know to generate heat, so if my system can stay cool. It should be possible to make your stay cool with out help from the airconditioning.
Good luck keeping it cool =)
(btw. i agree with your post(coolers == hardware), and im not trying to troll. I just wanted to provide you with some input)
"These first steps mark important progress toward changing the culture of government and extending the public's right to know what is being done in their name" Freedom of Information Minister Yvette Cooper said in a statement
Okay... seriously.. what DID them brits do to thiese poor aliens? And in the name of the british people! did they force them to play soccer and drink ale or something??
Nice enough, i think M$ already did something like this though. But still nice work by Opera, the big question is now: Will they land a deal with one of the larger mobile phone creators? If they do, hurraz, Yet another not-IE(hence, standards following) platform will be introduced. Each of these(Sony choosing Netscape for its PS2 is a other example, and there's more) will be yet another reason for the web developers to follow the standards, which of course is good news for users of non-exploder browsers.
All we need now is that Mozilla/Gecko quickly implements this. Because there's no doubt in my mind, that we will see a lot of embedded browsers being based on Mozilla/gecko in the future.
In about 5 years time we'll see embedded browsers in a lot of different devices, like mobile phones (and properly stationary phones too), consoles, DVD players etc. etc. Not all these devices, not matter how much M$ want it, will use Windows/IE.
They linked directly to the files which resided on various other illegal sites, the wierd thing is that they only sued the guys linking and not the sites which carried the illegal music in the first place.
Back in 1999, a whole bunch record companies(including sony, virgin, warner etc.(their Danish departments)) sued two Danish guys for maintaining a list of links to MP3 files from their web site.
The weird thing about this case was that all the focus was on the guys maintaining a link list, none of the sites who actually committed the crimes was sued(meaning the sites who actually did the ripping and hosting of the music).
I can understand why they sued the linking guys, BUT(huuuuge but) they should have went for a site shutdown plus maybe a minor fine. They didn't, they sued them for lost profit. Which is the exact same paragraphs that you would get sued by if you copied/ripped the music.
The whole case was build around they where linking directly to the mp3 files(hosted on various warez sites), and they eventually got them convicted(to pay 100000 DKr(roughly 12500$)) on this fact. This of course, effectively meaning that linking directly to illegal files is, here in little old Denmark, considered as serious a offences as making the files available.
So if CNET was doing this in Denmark, they could be in trouble.

Why is it that every time somebody plans a new multi-tier application, it seems like a browser is the only "realistic" option for the client? Don't get me wrong, i think browser based clients (if designed correct) can be great. They offer ease of use to the user, and are basically platform agnostic. But just remember, web clients aren't always the way to go. In your case for example, I would think a custom created client might be a better solution. Since a custom MDI applications still offers far superior multitasking capabilities as opposed to a browser client solution, meaning you spend less time working with the application and more time working with the data in the application. The larger a application get, the less suited for a browser it becomes. Who for example would like to use a browser based C++ IDE? It would be possible (though stupid) to create, but 1000000:1 you would prefer to use a compiled gkt/kde/mfc/whatever based application.
Also, when using a custom client you can actually use that 500Mhz+ badasso processor that resides in most computers today. And then just handle the most basic program logic(log in/out etc) on the server.
The geographical differences aren't a problem either, just use a database that's accessible from all the companies locations (simple networking task) in conjunction with the custom made client app.

I really dont want to argue anymore over eq, so im just gonna say one last thing(im not trying to tell you "this is how it is", its just my oppinion). Maybe the wall bug is fixed now what i was "crapping" about wasnt really the one bug. But it just seemed like to me like Varant always was really fast at cleaning up the bugs that where "good" for the player(like when some mob dropped to much loot or was to easy for it con), whilest they where really slow at fixing the other bugs(which took xp from the player, i died about 6 times trying to get my corpse after being killed right out side the priestres's house in eastcommons. Everytime i came back for it, he runned straigth through the wall and kicked me in the mouth. This was partly a noob mistake, i could have gotten invised or something. but still unfair i think, wheres the realism in a chick being able to see/attack through a wall).
i guess i just dislike varant, plain and simple =D
well, as i said. I cant seem to find any documentation/proof.
In my experince, enemies frenzy you more when you are getting really close to leveling. I might just be me(and the otherpeople i know), but as i wrote in my previous post. I meet other people who agreed that enemies seems more willing to attack when you are close to leveling. But ok, lets just say im wrong.
Though i must admit you all have such a hard time beliving me, I mean look at some of the features varant has implemented EQ. Like mobs spotting you though a castle wall or something, and then just steps rigth trough it to kick your butt, THIS is a common know "problem".
quote from this chat: http://www.everlore.com/news/eq_chat.asp Ledskof: Aradune-- Are you working on greater stability for the planes, such as makng it so monsters dont attack through walls, or did you mean just greater stabiliity in general?
Aradune: led: better stability yes, monsters attacking through some walls will never go away
this is how its supposed to work: http://starwarsgalaxies.station.sony.com/fe atures/ faq_pages/faq_7.jsp#713
And I could go on and on, like it costs like 60$ to move a character from one server to another. Varant is just full of bs.
Do i hate EQ? No, not at all(I do hate varant though). Could i play EQ again? Yes, when Varant changes its way of doing business. This may very well happen when Starwars Galaxies comes out and take a big fat marked share =D

Are DVDs really that expensive in the states? in europe 12 euros buys you 10 4.7GB DVD-R discs, in jewelboxes and everything.

Like mobs spotting you though a castle wall or something, and then just steps rigth trough it to kick your butt, THIS is a common know "problem".
quote from this chat: http://www.everlore.com/news/eq_chat.asp
Ledskof: Aradune-- Are you working on greater stability for the planes, such as makng it so monsters dont attack through walls, or did you mean just greater stabiliity in general?
Aradune: led: better stability yes, monsters attacking through some walls will never go away
this is how its supposed to work:

And I could go on and on, like it costs like 60$ to move a character from one server to another. Varant is just full of bs.
Do i hate EQ? No, not at all(I do hate varant though).
Could i play EQ again? Yes, when Varant changes its way of doing business. This may very well happen when Starwars Galaxies comes out and take a big fat marked share =D
