>Nope, they shipped version 4.0 twice. The second version of 4.0 didn't really offer anything over 3.3 (and was really buggy), so most people just skipped from 3.3 to 5.0 (I still have the manuals:-)
The version numbers were 4.0 and 4.01, although I don't think that I actually saw a copy of 4.0.
The problem (for both Crusader and Commanche) was NEVER that they didn't work. The Crusader prototype fired thousands of rounds and performed very well.
The main issue for both was that the problem for which they were designed to solve... changed. Specifically, the threat of large formations of Warsaw-pack armor formations through the Fulda Gap will never happen.
Fortunately, in the case of Crusader, there was a number of technologies where were developed which will be applied to the new howitzer (Future Combat System Non-Line of Sight cannon) and will allow it to be designed / tested / fielded much more quickly.
>>"And if the information was used in e.g. a courtroom..."
There is just a small problem with that (at least in the United States) and it is know as the Fifth Amendment. You know, that pesky thing that says something about a guarantee that no one would be forced to incriminate himself in court.
Granted, what you are saying is getting information and then using it in court instead of getting it in court, however I do not believe that there is a legal distinction. The result is the same. IANAL.
Make it the size of Mobilepro 7xx family and now we have something to talk about as far as a "desktop replacement."
Better yet. Make a lower-end one that has less ram, flash storage instead of a HD and configure processor to emulate a StrongArm. (IIRC, one of the strengths of the Crusoe is that it can emulate other architectures, although I may be wrong.)
Give the user the option of either PalmOS 5.0 or PPC 3.0. Drop the price a bit so that it is competitive with HP Jornada 720. Give the slightly larger form factor of the Mobilepro size (keyboard / screen), it then becomes a viable alternative for a lot of people to a full-blown laptop.
Advantages compared to Palm-sized PDAs: better keyboard / screen usability
Advantages compared to laptop: instant on longer battery life smaller overall size / less weight lower cost
Sure you wouldn't be able to carry it in your shirt / pants pocket, but so what? Like I'm going to carry anything that cost me over a couple hundred dollars in my shirt pocket. Put it in your briefcase, shoulder bag, whatever.
I would really like to see a PDA similiar to the Psion 5mx with the following additions:
Color display
StrongArm 206 MHz processor
USB port
built in modem
PC card type II slot
PalmOS (whatever the version is that they will create/release for StrongArm)
Additionally, keep the IrDA port, Compact Flash slot, keyboard, and larger display that the Psion 5mx has already.
This would give a larger display with a true keyboard. I've tried the Blackberry-type and they will not work for what I want to do, i.e. create/view/edit documents and spreadsheets without having to lug around a laptop. All that would be left is for an updated verson of DocumentsToGo to make use of the larger display.
Why PalmOS you ask? I have had a IIIxe for a year and I really like their desktop PIM. It is easy to use and works well (at least for me). Also since Palm/PalmOS has great name brand recognition in the US, that would probably be good from a marketing point-of-view.
I would think that there would be a great market for such a device. Something between the traditional handheld Palm devices and a full laptop. Handera? Sony? Palm? Are any of you listening?
The winner of the popular vote was never clear. Whenever something is counted, there is always a margin of error in the counting. It is unavoidable. The difference between the two was easily less than the margin of error.
Therefore, neither candidate can claim (with certainty) that they won the popular vote.
Yes, the first one to actually break the Enigma was Rejewski, a Polish mathematician. (Source: "Seizing The Engima".)
Turing was one of many who worked at Bletchley Park and contributed to the Allied war effort through signal intelligence. He is worthy of our respect for numerous things, however, single handedly breaking the German encryption is not one of them...

I cannot say about the 'OS invasive' part, but I have been using Opera 5.x (both win32 & linux) and I like it a lot...
The free version has a small ad-window, but it isn't too annoying.
Size? If you do not have jde installed, you have to get the larger version (~10M, IIRC), after that updates are small (~2.5M).
Are you trying to steal my job?
No... He just wants you to train him as your replacment... so you can be laid off.... vbg

Realtime performance means fast interrupt servicing
No... not necessarily.
Real-time is about predictability, not speed. More precisely, hard real-time is about absolutely, positively meeting deadlines.
A real-time system could have as a hard deadline a periodic task which must be completed no later than 24 hours from start.
While that is rarely the case, the correct definition does allow for this.

Most of the damage done to the country of Iraq was done long before the United States military and allies arrived on the scene.

Just how damned difficult is it to get acronyms right?
The correct definition is "Secure Internet Protocol Network," although I have also heard it as "Secure Internet Protocol Router Network"
Apparently, very difficult.

I would gladly settle for a re-enactment of that memory.

Since when do 'recent graduates' control what language they use on their first/second jobs?
They will program in whatever language they are told to use, period.

Is it just a matter that nobody has gotten around to it yet or is there a reason why it would be a bad thing?
Just curious...
