  8. Legend of Zelda = The Last Supper on Are Videogames Art? · · Score: 0

Or I guess you could say that 8 bit NES games are equivalent to caveman drawings.
I think those primitive games (and the even more primitive 2600 and ancient DOS stuff) are an art to an extent as some of them are so bizarre they could be considered more of a form of self expression than a commercial persuit. Of course, they ARE strictly intended as a commercial product, and that doesn't help the case for them being True Art. Most of the artifice attatched to videogames, especially as the effects become more complex and flashy, is included merely to boost their appeal. Explosions and sweeping camera movements, morphing and the like- it is art to the same extent that twinkies are gourmet desserts.

  9. TV reports even if there is no news to speak of. on Net: Now Our Most Serious News Medium? · · Score: 0

All day on 9/11 they replayed the footage continuously- explosion, explosion, collapse. I happened to be watching when they first aired that fireman's footage of the first plane hitting, and it was alarmingly gratuitous. They actually rewound it on the air and played it back in slow-mo several times.
They continued reporting around the clock even when there wasn't anything new to discuss, eventually unsubstantiated rumors to fill time. I remember hearing, in the early morning reports on 9/11, that there were as many as EIGHT hijacked planes!
Then there is the whole anthrax scare that the TV news has been running with. ONE PERSON DIED. It isn't a terrorist attack. Terrorists would have done much more damage.
If a rumor circulates on the net, even on a heavily-trafficed site like /., that rumor still isn't going to reach even 1/10 the amount of people it would reach on any TV news show.

  11. Jon Stewart crying? That's touching on Cowboy Bebop Back on Toonami · · Score: 0

the last thing any broadcaster wants is to be accused of dealing with a heavy situation like this in poor taste. Therefore, we have Jon Stewart weeping like a baby on the first Daily Show Broadcast. Everyone feels like they must apologise for continuing with their lives after this, and people who used to make fun of dubya feel they must repent now that current public opinion places him right up there with Jesus. You won't be seeing any new episodes of That's My Bush! Anytime soon.

But you're right, people should just relax a little. People need to laugh- not in spite of the situation but BECAUSE of it!

  17. Why worry about latent causes for terrorism? on Hackers are 'Terrorists' Under Ashcroft's New Act · · Score: 0

It seems as though we should have our hands full worrying about solutions for the MANIFEST causes of this incident. The problem is, many solutions that spring instantly to mind are improbable, like putting air marshals on every domestic flight and tracking every single dollar back to its source in the Al Queda. So we begin to search for latent causes, like the communication methods these terrorists might employ.

I hate to belabour the hellm0uth comparisonz, but there are some parallels in the way this aftermath is being handled, and it's easy to tell why. There is as much pressure to implement preventative measures now as there was then. Sure, gun control considerations and increased security at schools were things we heard about then, but we also heard plenty about how KMFM and doom might have figured into the equation.
