From TFA: Rover operators are optimistic they can extricate the robot from its jam, having gotten dug in before. and said Steve Squyres, lead scientist on the Mars Exploration Rover effort at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. "We are very optimistic that we'll be able to get out of here, but we're really going to take our time doing it."
I'd hardly interpret that as "it doesn't look good for the little guy".
The commenters point was that it is probably not true that most people have a flash drive these days, and I have to agree with that. A sampling of only undergrad bio students isn't a very good sampling of the US population as a whole (which is what I'd be lead to believe by the statement in the article). If you think that over 50% of US citizens have a flash drive, you're badly mistaken. I'm constantly in meetings of 20 or more people (with many geeks present) and when someone asks to borrow a flash drive to exchange files, I'd guess that only about 4 or 5 people in the meeting tend to have one (20 - 25%).
1GB iPod Shuffle: $149 The prices of the reviewed drives (according to the comparison matrix at the end of the article) are $77, $120, $116, $138, $86, $127, $108, $80, and $80 for each of the 1GB models. Not only is EVERY drive reviewed cheaper than a 1GB iPod Shuffle, but 4 of the 1GB drives are cheaper than the 512MB iPod Shuffle. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPod Shuffle, but it is NOT cheaper than these drives.
I'm also running my own DNS server after seeing my ISP's DNS Servers go down almost daily for a couple of months. This is a fine solution for me and my small network, but doesn't address the problem of ISPs not configuring their DNS servers properly.
Even if you run your own DNS, your server still has to pull its data from some root server, and if that server isn't reliable, then your server isn't reliable either. You could avoid this by pulling from THE root DNS servers, but if everyone did that it would put undue strain on the root servers.
I admit that this is a violation of the TOS, but it's nothing that I can't already do using just iTMS and iTunes. I can buy a track (or album) in iTMS, burn it to a CD-[R|RW] in iTunes, and then import it back into iTunes from the CD. This gets me a non-DRM'd version of the song using only the tools provided to me by Apple. I'm not saying that I'm not violating the TOS, I'm just saying that I don't feel that I'm doing anything morally wrong. If I was obtaining the music illegally, that would be one thing, but I did pay for it. Technically, I'm probably no better than people who are blatantly stealing content, but I don't feel guilty about what I'm doing.
I'll second that. I like Apple, their products, and their iTMS service (it's user-friendly and reasonabley priced, I don't like the DRM). I also like Jon and appreciate his work in breaking the iTMS DRM. I remove the DRM from songs that I purchase from iTMS, and will continue to use iTMS as long as there is a way to remove the DRM.
The last time that I used hymn (under WinXP) it worked for me. This was with the Garden State sound track and was before the most recent update to iTunes (4.7 I think). Always check the hymn forums before making a purchase at iTMS if you want to be sure that you will be able to listen to your music. There's also PyMusique which I haven't tried but might be a viable option.
Yes, they still get my money, and I'm fine with that. I will spend my money on digital music as long as there is a way (supported or not) for me to use it how I want. I could buy the CD instead (and always get an entire album), but iTMS is cheaper in most cases. As soon as someone offers a legitimate digital music store that is DRM-free and price-competitive with iTMS, I will switch. However, I doubt that will happen any time soon (if ever). Until then, I can effectively use iTMS to get DRM-free music.
Just to be clear, a lot of us who use iTMS do remove the DRM from the files. There have been numerous projects that have popped up to do this since iTMS launched and there probably will continue to be. If Apple ever manages to implement a DRM scheme that no one can get around losslessly then you can be damn sure I'll stop buying from them. Is what I'm doing a violation of the TOS? Absolutely. But I am not pirating music; I am buying a license to listen to a song and upholding my right to listen to it when, where, and how I want. So long as I'm not distributing the material, I don't see a problem with that.
This is called BlueJacking. See here. I've tried this in the US (airports, malls, etc) and it just doesn't work as well on this side of the pond. BlueTooth phones aren't widespread enough in the US, but over the next few years I'd expect to see them become more popular.

Do you really think that wanting free shit is a legitimate reason to spam people?
No, I don't actually. I also don't think that it being April 1st is a legitimate reason for the/. editors to post total garbage all day long. This was my form of complaining. I got modded down a lot today, as expected, but hopefully made some point that useless crap posts (like mine and today's stories) are not generally appreciated. I could've chosen to do all of this anonymously, but that would defeat the purpose in my mind. Sorry for all of the spam that I posted today, but if the/. editors continue this next year, I'll probably do something similar then too. And you wouldn't believe how much my freaks list grew today...

I'm making no attempt to be stealthy. My theory is that if the editors get to spam us all day, then we should all get to spam too. So, if I'm going to spam I'd at least like to get a free Mac mini out of it. It really works too. I've gotten an iPod and iPod Shuffle from these pyramid schemes with very little effort on my part. Go on, click the link. You know you want to.

1. If Douglas Adams were still alive, what do you believe would be his thoughts and opinion of the final version of the movie?
2. Do you believe the movie would be noticeably different if Adams had survived and had more of a hand in its making? If so, in what ways?

I'm just saying that the 3rd gen is old enough to be the 4th gen's father, not that it necessarily is the 4th gen's father.
I have a job. I also have a hard time convincing my wife that we need another computer. Please help. Thanks.
The two iPods in the iCopulate image are from different generations! That 3rd gen iPod could be the 4th gen iPod's father!

Maybe the monkees paid for their Macs. That's silly since everyone knows that you can get a Mac mini for free.
When will the iPod image used for Media (Apple) stories be updated from the 1st Gen to a 4th gen iPod?
Will SOE sue Blizzard over this? Or did Blizzard license the technology?
