Then use links or lynx (links is better by a mile IMHO... but open source is about choice, after all).

If all you want to view is the text without and display enhancements (which is what CSS is used for by any self respecting web designer), you need not a graphical web browser.

I agree, and I have been looking into doing something like that for a while now. The only problem is that the Broad Band Adaptors are NOT widely avaiable (you're looking at $50-$100 EACH on EBay)

If someone (MadKatz, Nyko et al), where to make 3rd party BBAs (which I don't see them doing), it'd make the whole thing a hell of alot easier....scratch that, possible.

Mozilla is actually quite slow for me on my work PC (Athlon 700, 320MB RAM, Redhat 7.2), but my work PC is stuffed (nothing works properly on it).

My home PC (Athlon 650, 512MB RAM Redhat 7.0), on the other hand, runs most things at a rapid pace. Mozilla, once loaded into memory, is lightning fast, though I'm starting to lean towards Galeon for my browsing needs at home and work. Mainly beacuse it can't be beaten for speed or configuration options. I really dig the RPMfind, Google, Freshmeat etc. search bar (talk about software at your finger tips).

In my humble web developing opinion, penny per page is a shite idea.

If a "per view" scheme were to be implemented, I feel a "penny per domain name per time period" would be a better scheme, where time period is something large like a day or 6 hours.

That way, I don't pay for flicking through various news articles that end up being pointless or badly written (as you encounter on even the best news sites).

The administration of such a system would be mind boggeling

There is an oddity about the GC discs that will be quite a hurdle to overcome.

Unlike normal optical disc drives, the GC drive does not increase RPMs as the laser moves to the outside of the disc, it stays constant.

But like you said, there will be a hacker somewhere who gets past this too (no doubt).

It's going to take a long time and a lot of hacking though. And I doubt that anyone will find a marketable hack (people are less inclined to rip their stuff apart than you may think).

This brilliantly shows the contrasts of the cultures involved this conflict.

In the radical Muslem culture, if the community doesn't like someone, they'll amass on the streets and burn flags and effigies of those they target their hate towards.

Here in the geeky section of the western culture, if we don't like someone, we make T-shirts saying so and then go about doctoring photos with the GIMP or Photoshop to make it look like whoever we dislike is guilty of conspiring with muppets.

Some may even go as far as to devote entire editions of their respective websites slandering not only those who we dislike, but the whole damn situation.

A nice contrast if you ask me :)

The real trouble will arise when a decent band, that perhaps a large number of Geeks listen to (say, Korn, Weezer, Groove Amada, or any othe rhalf decent group), start copy protecting thir CDs.

I have no doubt that someone will find a way around this stuff, look at DVD encryption for example (I know this is different, but the challenge is still there for _some_ hackers)

Furthermore, the BBC's John Simpson has insight to the Middle East like no other western journelist I have ever experienced. He's the best reference in this situation, he has understanding of the many cultures and history of the area with a Westernised view point.
