Um, no... You are paying a monthly fee to your cable/sat provider for the line going to your house, the maintenance of lines between their office and your hookup, and their big dishes to get the programming to feed to you in the first place. The commercials you watch pay for the programming that you view. Unless of course you are getting a premium channel that you pay extra for, such as HBO, then you are paying extra for the priveledge of not having to watch any commercials. This is akin to saying "I'm already paying a monthly fee for my internet access. Why should I have to view ads on websites? All those companies should make all that content available absolutely free even if they have to lose money in doing so." If advertisers realize that no one is watching their ads, then they'll stop paying premium prices for airtime. Less cash flowing in means that some new shows may never get the funding to see the light of day. Shows that may have eventually done well on their own.

Don't get me wrong- I'm not saying Lego would be right to do this, but that's not to say that they don't have a valid complaint. This is the whole point of the discussion. They are well within their rights to sue. And if they do, they will win. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to see this happen as much as you don't, but if the makers of LegOS don't give a little and at least change their name, I won't criticize Lego at all for pursuing this.

Well, this surely sheds a little more light on the Battlebots situation. The NFL analogy is a good one. CBS and Fox have no rights to the NFL name. They only pay $100's of millions for the right to broadcast the games. So it's not Comedy Central that is not suing the kid, but the owner of the Battlebots properties. Who registered his trademark long before the battlebots.org name was registered. I think the kid would be better off taking his $70 for the domain transfer and cutting his losses now...

This sounds like the signs that pop up at Great America every now and then. Saying something like "Filming is being conducted in the park today. Purchase of your park ticket indicates your consent to appear, uncompensated, in promotional materials. If you do not wish to be filmed, do not remain in the area." If you don't like it, then stay away! Anyhoo, I'm having difficulty focusing in on the fine line between this, and having live people monitoring hidden cameras or undercover security wandering the store looking for shoplifters. Personally, I think having undercover security alerted to your presence by computer is less of a "human rights violation" than getting "profiled" by undercover security, then getting followed around just because you "look" like a criminal.

Without wanting to offend the PETA people, the thing that they are concerned about is that they are human embryos, and this is an extension of the whole abortion issue of "is it really a human life before it is born?" or not. It seems that the Democrats really want this to happen. I suppose that if I were them, I'd just sit back for the next three years while scientists work on the sixty cell lines that are available. Then, if they are able to get their own person in there in 2004, they will just re-open the issue and allow the use of the 100,000 other frozen embryos available. Perhaps they are already, but if the Republicans in general are opposed to destroying new embryos because they have the "potential for life," then why aren't they calling for the unfreezing and implanting of those embryos to allow them to continue on their way? Not to mention a ban on creating more embryos?
