Hopefully, a story like this on a news site like MSNBC will be read by more internet newbies than if it were on CNet or something. People need to be educated that they nedd to always hold a little bit of paranoia on the internet, especially when shopping. Anything that requires entering anything more personal (and cancelable) than a credit card number is probably best not done over the web. Even if you think the company is "reputable", stuff like this happens, and probably more often than is published.

  6. Are there IT policies yet? on Wireless Network Auditor · · Score: 3

I work at a fairly large company, and in looking through the IT policies, I see nothing addressing employees setting up their own wireless networks. It would seem that similar to how companies have had to educate employees on the dangers of email viruses in recent times, perhaps now we also need to get the word out about how much of a security threat setting up a wireless network can be. The problem is that Bob in accounting might have enough technical know-how to get one set up so he can work in the park across the street on his laptop, but he may not be aware of how to properly secure the network to keep the "drive-by" hackers out.

Here's another very interesting possible application for you to stew over -- machines on the street corner that print you up the daily paper on demand. Mmm. There's a good one. Think of the extra cash a newspaper publisher could take in if they keep the news updated throughout the day. I could print out a paper for the train ride in, and another one going home with brand new or updated content. Make it so each customer can set their own preferences, perhaps stored on a magnetic card, so they only get news/sports/comics, etc. that they care to read, and perhaps advertising that is targeted to them, or ads for stores within a small radius of the printer. This way, the paper would only be a few pages long instead of 4-6 fat sections that I never have time to read completely. Wasn't HP or some other company working on something like this where you could have news sent to your printer in the morning?

  10. Re:Paying for purely virtual things on Why Won't You Pay for Content? · · Score: 2

There's a few big reasons people are reluctant to pay for "content" online. One is that they don't have anything to hold in their hands in exchange for their money. You pay for cable service, but that's not something you can "hold in your hands." You watch a show, and then it's gone. Yes, you could tape a favorite show, but you can also print out a webpage you find interesting as well. You pay for a newspaper subscription. Yes, you can physically touch the newspaper today, but once the recycling truck drives off, it's gone. And the cable argument has been done to death already. Yes, yuo pay twice. You pay your cable company once to install, maintain, and provide service on the line to your home. And you "pay" again by watching advertising during your shows. This "payment" pays for the studios, actors, cameramen, etc. to actually have something to deliver on your service.

There are even some smaller drives on the market now that can draw their power from the 1394 bus thus not requiring an external power source. From what I understand, you need a pure FireWire interface to power the drive. Sony's iLink looks just like FireWire, but it's not powered, so you would need an extra power source.

Suppose when MS adds their links, they take the reader to the Microsoft store where they can buy PalmPC's and Windows products.
