  1. Re:Lets compare windows to linux on The Future of Windows Graphic Technology · · Score: 4, Insightful

And you don't see how that is confusing as hell to the 'average joe' user? Hell, it's confusing to me, and I've been programming since I was seven years old... and that means I've been doing it for over 2 decades...

Until Linux gets over their archaic install issues it'll never take off in a big way in consumer land.

(And yes, I like Linux, I try to have as much here at my workplace running on Linux when it makes sense... it's just not user friendly.)

  2. But, Adams was dead on Hitchhikers Guide Movie Might Become a Trilogy · · Score: 1

Adams didn't 'work' with the other contributer, as he got hold of the script AFTER Adams' death.

As mentioned on the 'interview' linked from Slashdot some time ago: here,

  3. Each to their own on Hitchhikers Guide Movie Might Become a Trilogy · · Score: 1

While I don't think it was as good as it could have been... I quite enjoyed it for what it was... it had the audience I saw it with laughing, and that's pretty much the point.

  4. Why does everyone keep doing this? on Hitchhikers Guide Movie Might Become a Trilogy · · Score: 5, Insightful

Why does everyone keep saying "This was the same as the book", "This was different" etc. etc.

Surely you all know very well by now that Adams changed the story to suit the medium (and his own fancy). The radio play, books, TV Show and now movie are ALL DIFFERENT.

They share a LOT in common, but why people get all ansy(or is that antsy) about what's different in the films compared to the books is beyond me.

  7. Exactly... on RFID Music Player · · Score: 4, Insightful

I do hate it when someone takes it on themselves to speak for everyone... why they couldn't have said 'which many have come to loathe' or 'which many have privacy concerns over' etc.

Personally I think they're kinda cool... and coming from a data and human interaction focused business such as I am in, the things they can do to the betterment of people's experiences of things is supurb.

  8. Re:What about actually reading? on Sources of Intelligent Audio for Commute? · · Score: 1

See the problem was that the article didn't mention driving at all, it said commute... and that to me instantly meant "Public Transport"... just because that's what I use...

So there you go... badly written article.

  9. What about actually reading? on Sources of Intelligent Audio for Commute? · · Score: 0

I mean, come on, searching for audio books etc... why not just read? What's wrong with the ol' low tech response here?

It's what I do, and I have been able to read so many 'important' books that I would never have had the time to otherwise. (You know, all those books that you say "I should really read that one day").

    Read man... REEEEEAAAAD!

  10. The whole article is crap on Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD · · Score: 1

Really, it's sad when stuff like this is presented as 'news'. With lines like those already quoted, and others like "One of the data broadly available on the Internet is the maximum supported resolution: an amazing 1920x1080 pixel." WHAT? That made no sense!

Geeze, you'd think that the slashdot editors could do a LITTLE checking for the quality of what's posted.

  11. DAMN annoying camera effects in space! on Battlestar Galactica Season 2 This Summer · · Score: 1

I have been enjoying this show too (it's just started in Australia), but MAN I am VERY, VERY tired of the fake handheld pan and zoom effect in the CG space scenes... Used once or twice (like, once or twice a Season) it can be effective... but EVERY SINGLE shot in space has the damn "whip zoom, jiggle, centre" type shots in it, and it's gets VERY annoying... it basically smacks of complete lack of creativity in the direction of these scenes... there is a time and a place for all things, and there can be a lot of nice, steady shots done people... it CAN work... watch some good Sci Fi movies, or even some good war movies to see how to do it... and STOP the damn effect.

  12. Indeed on A Savant Explains His Abilities · · Score: 1

I completely agree... it was wonderfully written, and nothing was made of it in the article, very, very nice.

What I am saddened to see is that the first few screens worth of comments on this article became discussion about homosexuality and autism and then religion and homosexuality...

    so sad.

I wish you well in your hunt for a partner... and hey, as a question, did you leave the church because of its stance on homosexuality, or completely unrelated issues. (I guess I just find it odd how gays can go to church considering how much hatred and anger the church has dolled out to them...)

  13. Re:Exaggerated exasperation on Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trailer · · Score: 1

If I had mod points I would have just used them... well put. I was just reading some people's comments about LOTR just above here and stunned that people can't handle a film being different from the source material... can't they just sit back and be taken away by a movie? Do they think they could do better? (Actually, I'm sure they do think they can, but give them a week trying to do it in reality and they'd realise they had no chance).

From just reading the screewriter's self interview I would imagine this is in good hands... hell, from watching the tinsy tiny trailer I think it looks like it's in good hands...

I'm looking forward to it and will not be directly comparing it to the books, even if I have read them twice... (Doesn't mean I know every plot point, twist, character or things like that though)

There is no point sticking your head in the sand when these come up and pretending that there aren't holes in Firefox/Mozilla/Linux/OSX etc. etc. There are, of course there are...

And 're reading Orwell on usage'??? What, you think we should all move to newspeak? OK... I'll leave you to your doublethink.

  17. They kind of can't say it like that on Bill Gates Interview w/ Spiegel · · Score: 1

The problem is, when you're a company as big as they are, serving as many people as they are... you have to be VERY careful about what you say. Almost anything you say will offend someone... the deal is that I would imagine that they have to way up the numbers and say "There is a community of Linux lovers who think they're very vocal and are making a difference, but in the overall scheme of things are harldy heard by the majority of people... They are a small community though, and already lost, so if we have to offend someone, it's them"

So they don't say that the average user of Windows is an average Joe who doesn't know what they're doing, as that's going to offend the majority of Windows users...

They may say these things internally (I would imagine they do), but they look at the BIG (Like, really big) picture here... and they are not going to say 'Linux is more secure', they're just not.

Plus the interviewer was crap in my opinion, he just harped on in the same vein as the MS haters here... kept putting forward 'attacks' that were easily put down by the line 'Microsoft has so much more market share'... which it does, and does explain a lot... so there's no need to keep trying to rephrase the same argument that Windows has more attacks on it.

Both the things you say are true, and are closer to the truth than most say here, but they just aren't things that Microsoft can say, either for fear of annoying people, or for legal reasons.

Yes, I know there are 'hacks' and other such 'workarounds' to get to access it otherwise, but they don't count, they exist for any operating system and product...

They don't let it appear as just a drive for easy dragging and dropping if you want... they enforce that you must have iTunes installed... and I don't like iTunes...
