I think you'll be happy to see that Barf's outfit is up for auction in this!
Very nice.
Actually, there are a huge number of VERY cool props in this auction... including the original 12 foot long Alien spaceship model as used in Alien and Aliens, now THAT would be cool.
...thanks for that, I didn't know that at all... I was of the opinion it was a frivolous case etc.
So thanks for showing that it did have some merit afterall.
Doesn't change the fact that the US (and now other countries like my own, Australia) have a HUGE amount of ridiculous, money grabbing cases... and many that succeed...

I've recently been doing some things with some older computers, ones with Windows 98 on them... and at one of the worksites I work at a number of the PCs have NT on them.
There is a LOT of difference in functionality between them and an XP box (or, for the most part a 2000 box). Not just the look and feel, but usability, ease of just plugging in devices and having them work, photo browsing in the interface, ease of networking etc. etc.
There are differences, big ones as they move up the OS tree, stop being so flippant.
Except one with a modding community, backwards compatibility back MUCH further than consoles, better resolution, better controls, more involved games, a wider selection of games... and let's not forget this... I also use it as an actual PC for my accounting, documents, photo editing, web publishing, file sharing, viewing video files on my tv etc. etc. etc.
It's ONE machine that does ALL that... and does it all damn well, and does it under windows.
If I want to run Photoshop, Office, Games, Dreamweaver et el... well, it's Windows for me, and I'm very happy with it.
... if we want to play any decent number of games... I'm afraid you kind of have to use it, so don't be so high and mighty and say "Well just don't use it", because we have to.
Except that what is being linked to and talked about IS NOT THE TRAILER!
It's the first episode of this... you've just seen the trailer, NOT the first episode... download that, then watch it, then bitch and moan all you like.
From the Doom 9 Forum post: Hidden feature: Hold Ctrl+Alt+Shift and press 'A' during playback to enable old-school ASCII rendering of your favorite movies!
I'm hurridly downloading the divx sample from the website to try this... how very cool. (Useless, but very cool):D
And for you and the not-that-many like you who really don't see the benefits in image and sound quality, the added convenience of random access, the space saving size, the range and quality of movies on offer, the extra features, and best of all, the non-deteorating nature of the format... then fine, don't pay again... but you're not really paying for the same thing are you?
It's like saying "Hell, 5 years ago I paid for a fine and dandy 486, and I'll be buggered if I'm paying again for what is the same just better... no sirree bob, no Pentium 4 for me m'laddy"
Erm... just because a piece of open source software is used in the development of ANYTHING, doesn't mean that entire thing is open source/public domain.
If that was the case then anyone using linux to do any coding would never be able to charge money...
That is just horrendous... and people wonder why they get fat! Geeze... switching to water, or juice at the least would indeed make a huge difference with that kind of intake.
urrrrgh... just the thought of that 'fuzzy feeling' on the teeth after that much sugary drink... yuck
I completely agree with your post... I was thinking too much in the 'Free to Air' model whereby we don't pay for the shows, the advertising does, and by not watching the adverts, the shows don't get the money... Pay TV's penetration in Australia is nowhere near as deep as in the US.
I'm all for the subscribe for downloading shows model... I would like a 'subscribe to each channel' type model, where I could subscribe to, say, the Discovery channel, and have unrestricted access to download all of their content during my subscription period.
I would love that, it could be worldwide, simultaneous viewing of shows around the world... ahhh.
As it is, I too download via bittorrent, I do so for shows that I started watching on Free to Air here which were then shunted and moved and cancelled etc. (Scrubs, Gilmore Girls, Battelstar Galactica), or for episodes I've missed on TV (Lost).
Except that the less people that actually watch the show, and rather watch via downloads, and therefore don't see the ads, the less money the producers are able to get, so the shows go off the air.
But the way you say it, you seem to think that what you're doing is hunky dory? How are the creators/actors of the shows you're watching getting paid for creating this work you so fervently watch?
You don't have a right to just get it for free...
Would you be prepared to pay for this as a distribution method? How about $x per season of whatever show? Although it would be rights managed to stop you copying it and sending it on to others, as then they would see it without the creators getting money all over again.
If so, then fine... but don't assume you have the god given right to download the shows these guys work damn hard on creating for free... you don't.
I think the moderation is spot on here... me Insightful, you Troll:D
Really, what have you said of any use?
I didn't make the initial post which was 'Hey look how easy it is: Command line guff, command line guff'. I was merely commenting on how there is this section of the computer community that doesn't see how that kind of stuff scares the hell out of 99% of users.
Now as for the video driver issue, unless you're after the absolute cutting edge ones, they come down no probs via Windows update... no thinking required there... they just work.
If you want the latest then the majority of computer games mags I have come with them as part of their software discs... so then it's a case of just using the handy-dandy interface they tend to have and click on install... done.
The other thing is that for so many things now, out of the box, no driver needed... Windows just works... I've plugged in all sorts of cameras, printers, mp3 players etc. and they've all auto detected, installed and were availble for use within seconds... nothing simpler than that.
Now, I like the sound of apt-get install in the graphical form people are talking about it (haven't used it myself)... however I see naming things in any useful form is still not high on Linux developers checklist... 'nvidia-glx' Why can't it be called 'Nvidia Graphics Drivers'?
Windows is still easier. I'm trying to use Linux for more, but as yet have kept running into things that make me just not want to waste my time with it just yet.
And yes I encourage the use of deadly weapons. I think that the more people who are familiar with guns the better. Not only for an enjoyment standpoint, but if more people were familiar with them (ESPECIALLY youngsters) you'd see far fewer accidents. I'd be all in favor of allowing one-time tax deduction of up to $1000 for the purchase of a gun by anyone legally able to do so.
And right there I see you're someone (well, that and your 17 guns) who can never be reasoned with when it comes to firearms. I'm very happy to live in Australia where those who have even shot a firearm are in the minority... we seem to have FAR, FAR fewer deaths per head by firearms... or actually murders full stop actually.
Urgh... I have, and I do... I have installed a number of distros, have played around trying to get a usable desktop system going for work users and was really happy to begin with (I think this was Fedora), but then started running into walls with certain simple hardware/software things that required some pretty deep understanding of what was going on under the hood, and I just thought "This ain't going to work for our users".
I want it to work... I want to have a bunch of the desktops at my workplace running Linux, and I'll do it again, I'm sure.. and next time I might try and note down everything to do with the experience and post it somewhere... just so I can remember what the silly things were that discouraged me.
It's not that I don't understand them, it's that it's archaic crap that I'd rather not have to remember.
Graphical interfaces mean I don't have to remember what the command line argument or switch is as it's all logically laid out... I can come back to a system years later and find my way to what I want... command line wize... Well, I'm just not going to remember that the command to run is called apt-get... I might spend ages trying app-get, appget aptget get-apt... I mean... urgh. Just because you use it every day, and so have these things burned into your brain, doesn't mean that your average Joe user, or even myself who's used to bizarrely named things can remember what they are.
I can't even remember the syntax to whatever programming language I'm not currently working in... it takes me a few days of working in one again to have my mind refreshed as to whether the variable prefix is $ or @ or whether it even has one, or what this particular language's syntax for an if statement is etc.
That you can't see how that can be a problem I think makes you the far bigger fool.
Of course it's boring to keep having people like me say it... but then other people beforehand keep saying "This bit and that bit were different than the book".
I think you'll be happy to see that Barf's outfit is up for auction in this!

Yeah, no, instead let's all happily link to mov files instead... oh, wait, we need a propriety player for that too.
Oh, and if I actually want to watch it fullscreen I have to PAY for the damn privilage... I don't think so.
Ridiculous anti MS drivel.
And yes, I know there are alternatives to using quicktime itself... but there are for wmv files too... I didn't write the first post did I?
Except one with a modding community, backwards compatibility back MUCH further than consoles, better resolution, better controls, more involved games, a wider selection of games... and let's not forget this... Except that this is all to advertise their new 'UP TO DATE' version of monopoly, with such wonders as 'The London Eye' 'Camden Markets' etc.
So, even though I couldn't be shagged looking through all the properties on the board they have there, I bet Wimbeldon is there.
... if we want to play any decent number of games... I'm afraid you kind of have to use it, so don't be so high and mighty and say "Well just don't use it", because we have to.

3. Higher Manufacturing costs
4. Consumers like the CD/DVD form... encasing it in a cady/shell makes it seem clunky and old fashioned.
It ain't going to happen.
That is just horrendous... and people wonder why they get fat! Geeze... switching to water, or juice at the least would indeed make a huge difference with that kind of intake.
urrrrgh... just the thought of that 'fuzzy feeling' on the teeth after that much sugary drink... yuck
Dear god! How much soda did you drink? Did you live on the stuff? Seriously, that is a lot to loose from just removing sodas from your diet...
I think you've improved a lot of other things in your body than just weight by removing that kind of intake.

Because they aren't finished yet... the point they're up to now is just 'Hey, it works!'... there's a lot more to do before they finish.
Wah? There are plenty of HD Receivers available.
Just a quick search on Dick Smith's website reveals These Receivers, of which 3 of the 8 are High Def.
There are plenty of them around... you really just haven't looked.
And HD TVs? Man, there's heaps... just walk into any electronics store and have a look...
You're just making stuff up.
I think the moderation is spot on here... me Insightful, you Troll :D

But I think another part of the argument can go: "Why can't you find some passtime that uses something that isn't designed to kill?"
I'm sure shooting can be fun and rewarding etc. But the issue is that you're using and encouraging use of deadly weapons.
I dunno... it just seems to me that there are passtimes that can be enjoyed that don't involve deadly weapons
Of course it's boring to keep having people like me say it... but then other people beforehand keep saying "This bit and that bit were different than the book".
So, obviously not everyone has heard it.
