Isn't that the whole idea of open source? The guys working for our government can see the source code. Either this guy is clueless or working for someone with a vested interest.
On the flipside, what is to prevent our government from doing the same thing? If the "enemy" can insert malicious code, why can't our government?
This is a great area where an open source app would be found. You could get the bigger companies like ML,Vanguard,Fidelity, etc to fund an app that they could all share and return. But realistically, will they.. No. I work for a company that does some financial software consulting. These people guard thier data very closely, because that's what matters to the managers. Having somehting in an open format lets you move to another app and loses that subscription fee they all covet. This is going to end up being an app that someone who works for a company like mine does on the side(and probably breaks thier contract in the process). You would think an app running on GTK/Qt with a PostgreSQL backend could do all of this. But I still haven't seen anyone even interested in it.
My laptop has an internal modem and i use the slmodem driver and it works great(Its an IBM G40 laptop) running with a 2.6 kernel. I think for every PC(workstation), I've always used an ISA modem. I tink you've got 4 options:
1 - buy an ISA modem(if possible) 2 - Buy an external modem 3 - http://www.usr.com/products/home/home-product.asp? sku=USR5610B.. i blieve this is a hardware PCI modem 4 - Do your research on the drivers before you buy a winmodem.. many do work.. really.. they do
iirc.. VS.NET, Dreamweaver, Homesite, bluefish, anjuta, eclipse(now), probaby kate, and god knows how many more have this.. its a pretty common feature ive seen in most "major" code editors(dunno about vi(use %) or emacs).
could someone more familiar with HPC systems please explain to me why any cluster is attached to the internet? I'm assuming these are externally routable addresses. I just dont understand why you would do this.
"Just comercial. What about open source? Should they not be held to the same standard as comercial?"
notice i did not say "Open Source"... I said commercial, and if you would like to include SuSE,RH,MDK,TurboLinux,Lycoris,Lind??s,etc.. be my guest.
I think it would be kind of hard to sue debian or fedora or slackware, etc. But i guess you can hold them to the same standard if you want. But i think you sohuld be looking at companies like MS,Symantec,Quicken,AOL, who make software that thousands(millions) of people run and pay(sometimes a lot of) money for.
Perhaps some level of legislation would be good. How about a law(only for US) that would outlaw an open relay, requiring each mail server to be configured correctly. Or perhaps something that says an ISP like AOL or Comcast should not permit port 25 traffic beyond its router unless it comes from thier own SMTP server.
I realize lots of spam comes from overseas, but a lot also comes from aol.com,rr.com,comcast.net,etc.
Or we could just make commercial software vendors responsible for the quality of thier software.
I'd like to point out there is a susquehanna river that runs through the center of Pennsylvania. With an East and North branch. i believe it enters the atlantic into the chesapeke bay.
I dont know the algorthm for this.. but JavaScript sucks.. i mean.. like bad.. worse than VB. Just doing simple string manipulation can be a bear in javascript. PHP also has many functions built into the language.
You dont use them because you're a programmer. There's a big difference between a software programmer and a software engineer.
Please try going to IBM/HP/Oracle and tell them to implement you a 10 million dollar software solution but tell them you don't want them to spend time doing any actual planning. You'd just like them to start coding immediately.
Every large project should use some sort of diagramming/planning. Can you get away with no flow-chart for a website or maybe even a 100,000 line program.. sure. Try something 10-100 times larger. While you're at it.. don't bother commenting your code either.
Programming/Developing/Engineering is still a science. There is a certain inherent "art" which makes some people better than others. But it is still a science.
i believe that it was implied that Mono would introduce a binding for system.forms to work with GTK. I could be off target. But I believe that is the plan.
perhaps you should give us some direction. Do you like math, computers, biology, electronics, chemsitry, literature, history, music, photography, sailing, mountain biking, or cooking, etc.
the fun things with your brain are probably going to revolve around your current interests. If you like electronics, build something like maybe a guitar amp, or learn something about magnetics and make a pair of speakers/headphones. obviously not hard, but maybe you'll learn something about how sound works and how to optimize speaker shape for better sound.
if all else fails, become a brewmaster. That's gotta be one of the best jobs ever.
Where's the story? Or is this just one person's interpretation of Java vs. C#?
But what about .. uhm .. say Neutral .. ? or don't european cars have that?

Because nothing else could do this?
I'm not 100% sure about jedit, but i eclipse does PHP,Python, and perl, and probably the others too. If not, there may be a plugin available soon.

Really I think Monkey Bubble, Trackballs, Chromium are all pretty cool. One other that I've wasted tons of time. Enigma
Why does every incremental release and beta of KDE get mentioned here? But when Gnome releases, nary a word.

So using the free hardware from Sun/MS and my free OS of choice .. I can have a truly free system.
Now if only the people on my block would let me put up a windmill generator.

if you try again in #debian you may get different results .. it depends on the time of the day and if everyone had a good lunch :) ...
