  1. Re:Real world loans are going to really freak you on Student Loan Interest Rankles College Grads · · Score: 2, Informative

Not all direct loans have subsidized interest. Most of my loans are of the unsubsidized type, and while not due while in school, accrued interest from the date of issue. Some of my loan money is subsidized, and is not accruing interest while in deferment.

The first chunk of my loans, issued pre-Fall 2006, are at ~1.8% and is a variable rate. My loans issued Fall 2006 and onwards are at 6 and change. My only complaint is that they refuse to let me pay back the higher interest loan first, telling me that federal law prohibits it.
Loans for graduate school are higher, my wife has graduate PLUS loans at the 8.5%.

2 years in the Peace Corps will not forgive any of your loans, it will just get you a two year deferment. Those PLUS loans of the OP are going to sit and accrue interest at 8.5% for two years. The $6,000 "resettlement" cash PC gives you when you return won't cover the interest on his loans. Not withstanding any other benefits (increased employability, personal growth, ect), the PC is a poor economic decision for recent graduates with unsubsidized loans.

I attend VCU in Richmond VA. My girlfriends bike was stolen, and she saw the guy take it. The police said they were busy, someone would be out tomorrow. No one ever came. A friend had their moped jacked, they got someone out to take a report two days later, after the roomates moped got stolen as well.

Then, we get an email from the Dean of Students, that said in part.

This letter is to inform you that a Party Patrol, consisting of
officers from the Richmond Police Department Third Precinct, the
VCU Police Department and the Virginia Department of Alcohol
Beverage Control, has been formed. The Party Patrol will patrol
areas of the Fan on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights during
the month of December. The goal of the Party Patrol is to reduce
the disorderly nature of parties that occur in that area.

The Patrol will have the ability to arrest individuals who are
publicly intoxicated, who provide alcohol to minors, or who are
underage drinkers. Additionally, information on the owner of the
residences where the parties are being held will be provided to
neighbors so that warrants can be obtained.

People call the police and they are "busy" and have to "prioritize the call volume." Those kids having a good time must be a threat to society. Police go where the money is.

I've been involved in FIRST since the fall of 1998, and am active on the ChiefDelphi Forums for years. I've been to competitions all over the country. These are my qualifications to speak on this subject.

I agree with you that most FIRST teams are used as marketing devices, but they are used as marketing devices for the enginnering profession. I know many people that have gone on to work for the company that sponsered their team, and know off countless others. NASA is now the largest sponser of teams, with partial funding for over 200 teams. For many of those teams, the NASA funding allows them to afford to compete but they have no NASA enginners or employees involved at all.

The purpouse of FIRST is not to teach kids engineering. It is to Inspire and get kids excited about engineering so as to goto college to learn engineering. It is to provide an alternative role model and idol to Ron Artest.

Here is a little bit from Dean Kamen, the founder of FIRST. In 2000, a VIP inquired him about "students not building the robots, like the Delphi teams". Dean replied, "But, if I walked into the pits of any of those Delphi teams, and asked any of the students about the robot, they could explain every inch of it. Learning is important, not whether they built it or not".
