Of course it is not a great exhibit. But as something put together by donations from staff, I think it is darn nifty. In fact, I am jealous because my Alma matter Virginia Tech doesn't have a similar setup. I always felt VA Tech was more for the real geeks and UVA was more for the business minded people. UVA is way too greek to be true geek (coo! I just made that up). So I guess I'm going to have to campaign for a museum at VA Tech now. It might be hard because I live on other side of planet now, but it could be made easier by the fact they regularly auctioned off crap.. erh I mean exhibits... this old in auctions. At least they were doing so a few years ago. So how about it! I'm sure there are more than a few Hokies reading Slashdot. Get to work!
Microsoft is not trying to make money on video games...well they are but they have a much grander vision ahead for which each X-Box is an investment in. This is MicroSofts way into each and every living room of America. They own you at work, now they are going to own you at home. This is their line straight into the entertainment dollar. Anybody read about how they will offer voice-over-ip? I thought one thing, brilliant! Now even grandma's going to get one so she can talk to Johny while he's playing a kick-someones-ass-with-porstar-looking-character games.
Maybe flame bait.. but how wonderfully superficial of you. "I don't care what is in it, so long as it tastes good", "I don't care who pofits, so long as I enjoy it", "I don't care who dies, so long as I get off on it", "I don't care about anything my my own emmediate gratification and don't care to think about anything past that".
I definately have NOT been waiting for this. Have we lost all originality that we now must use dead actors to do our acting? Can't we find enough new actors and stars that we don't need to continue to cash in on the star power of old? Wouldn't a booming industry generating new movies with old stars say something about how our society values image over content. How the illusory is slowing replacing the real untill we no longer understand the difference and don't know why we should even care.
If I ever become famous I am going to try damn hard to make sure I don't end up selling baby diapers from the great beyond.
The triangle table kicks ass also! I sooo wish I could spend my whole life working on projects like this. Not tables, per se, but any little fanciful project I dream up. For instance, a lego statue of Seven of Nine.... oh god, its true what the bullies said. I AM a loser. I actually think a periodic table table is clever and cool!
The only thing, and by only, I don't mean it is not a biggie. In fact it is huge! But the only thing they did wrong in my opinion is not be up front with people. Spy-ware, ad-ware, and whatever you want to call this (bandwith-ware?) are all resonable ways for free software to make money IFF they are completely and clearly up front about how, what, why, and when they are doing. Not just at the beginning, but for as long as they are doing it. I have no problem with that.
In addition to buggy software they are going to suffer from a marketting angle. If you have to pay for software, even if only a little, does "ThinkFree" really rub you the right way? And it doesn't have a great ring, nothing as simple as "Word", encoraging as "WordPerfect", or powerful as "StarOffice".
Also, the article said it lacks "the feature that flags possible misspellings". Does this mean no spell checking at all!? Or just the inline checking as you type? Lacking something as simple and basic as a spell checker is almost unforgivable. If it lacks as-you-type checking, I wonder if that could be a patent issue. I wouldn't be shocked.
Yahoo? Get slashdotted? uhhh..... i'm dumbfounded you could even say that. I guess haveing users post entire articles is a semi-legal way for slashdot to flat out rip people off.
ooops. meant to reply that to the original post, which was modded as off topic (obviously). And consisted of "bomb plot kill drugs conspiracy government lucifer cult hijacking money laundering sex scandal nuclear biological weapon arms revolution revolt uprising battle war underground kill murder maim harm homicide genecide koran jew christian dogs poison anthrax liberal communist ultra right wing president govenor congressman senator council member school board columbine...gee... think that might register a few keywords? "
modded as off topic! Fuck you! get your head out of your ass. Obviously the point is that if we flood our email, posts, etc with key words, it makes it harder to use said key as a criteria for filtering email or other communication!
From article: "Carnivore and how the software, which is reportedly capable of 'filtering' e-mail"

For crying out loud, you people are fucking addicted to this place
I'm not addicted to anything, I do however like to read actual news and interesting things, not a day full of bullshit.
I like it better when it was just for Malda's personal amusement
Wow Mr User 65528, so sorry all the rest of us came here and ruined your little party. Why don't you go start your own damn website where you can post pointless and misleading crap for the rest of your life.... like I did, though not misleading.
I enjoy a witty joke as much as another person, but slashdot is suppose to be 'like' a community. That is what its success is built on, and it seems the majority of the community wasn't happy the time. I for one wouldn't mind seeing a minor appology. But after all, it isn't a real community. They own the website and they can do whatever they like. But I still say "fuck them" for doing it.
Jeeze. Well I suppose someone had to bring that up. I'm just as paranoid as anyone else but it is a bit rediculous to worry about that. I mean it is your toilet man... don't hook it up to the police network if you don't want to. As for other people's toilets, that is clearly a violation of rights. It is much less ambigious as for instance face recognition in public places (my number one big brother concern). Just hold it while you are in the buildings of any company named Gattaca and you will be fine.
Forgot to mention...I also highly recommend the toilet paper holders! If you always put the toilet paper on top of the holder because you are too lazy to put in on the rod, you will appreciate as much as me "One-hand toilet tissue loading and unloading".
I'm glad this story came up because I found local dealers near my parents in the USA. I'm going to be the favorite sun again:) Lost it when my brother bought my mom a PDA.

I spent a lot of time on one of these toilet and let me tell you... the are the best! I was sick as a dog for about a week one time. Spending a LOT of time using a warm jet cleaning system is far nicer than rubbing your.... with toilet paper each time.
I live in Japan, but I don't own one because I just can't quite justify the cost. Luckily I spent that week in my girlfriends house.
I wish I could say something insightful and profound about this... all I can do is sigh as one more piece of news forces me to face the innevitable future completely lacking in privacy and anonimity. The ONLY way out of it is legislation against it. And post Sept 11, I just don't see that happening. I think it is going to take bold and equally in your face protesting to turn the trend around. Perhaps a lot of people wearing masks on a daily basis when in public.
If sony won't distribute free games for a small (though I think it would be in their interested), how hard would it be to port the games if you did cough up the licensing fee.
How easy would it be to port it to a 'native' PS2 game, one that could be sold commercially? Or if not sold, maybe Sony could distribute it for low cost to push sales and I could get some fame as a game developer that way.... any thoughts? I just don't want develop games that so few people could end up playing.

The VKB looked very cool. Too bad the website was next to useless.
I am excited about the new wireless monitors. I was seriously concidering the PaceBlade, a laptop with a wireless monitor! But felt it almost what I wanted, just not quite. For instance, no mention of whether or not I can use the monitor with a standard computer or if it takes analog signals for watching TV. I'll wait for that perfect combination.... hopefully not too long! I'm salivating.
It got the story on slashdot didn't it? How many other sites covered it? And of course they deny it is a marketing stunt. If they admit that up front, then the story becomes much less interesting. Its just not as shocking when someone admits they just want to shock you.
It took over 45 years to develop a watch that kept time accurately at see. And loosing over a second a day of accuracy was considered accurate!
It is amazing to think about the rate at which technology is improving. The changes we see in our life time are clear evidence of an acceleration in the rate at which technology is advancing. It was only since about the time of Jules Verne that technology has begun to change rapidly enough that humans recognize its effect on society. It was this recognition that was necessary to give birth to speculation about the effect of technology on the future, otherwise know as science fiction.

Another good reason for news agencies (or anyone) to use a fake backdrop is so they don't get views like this.
