  1. Karma whore on DoJ search requests: Yahoo, AOL, MSN said "Yes" · · Score: 1

    3) Do nothing!!!
    4) Rake in some insightful comment

I'm trying to understand why there is to be so much reluctance on part of /. crowd to accept this. Every fifth post seems to be calling this vaporware, or saying the business is flawed or some such negative comment, instead of any discussion about the technology/feasibility. Contrast this with the announcement from Transmeta and the enthusiastic welcome that /. crowd gave it. Makes me wonder if this is all sour grapes, as Apple already committed to move to x86, and this seems to make Power a decent option for laptops again.

I know, I would most probably be modded a troll.

Just because you're a fanboy of Apple, doesn't make Apple the be-all and end-all of PowerPC. Apple's share in the whole PowerPC market was miniscule (less than 5% AFAIK). These guys can still make profits big time without caring a fuck about Apple.

  15. Ah, the "Indepence" in ISV on Software Development Practices At Google · · Score: 3, Interesting

    From TFA
The intranet in Google is super transparent. Teams are actively encouraged to share the most intimate details of their projects with the rest of the company. This happens through tech talks, design docs, lunch table conversations, etc.

That is the advantage of being an ISV. In companies where you work under non-disclosure agreements with some other software provider, liberties are limited. (I know, that would not be the case if everyone in the world uses open-source, but that is not the case, yet). Yes, there will still be opportunities to share good ideas in the form of utilities and stuff, but there certainly are limits to what you can share with other teams without infringing on NDA.

Hell, a few companies I know (in particular software contract-companies), have different access cards for different groups - preventing physical access. Sometimes it is imposed by client. But many times it's just the wisdom(!) of the PHBs who impose policies like, everything will be shared on a "need-to-know" basis!

I don't know enough about OS security stuff and so am not commenting on your claims that OS X is more secure. But, just that your experiment does not _prove_ that OS X is more secure than windows. Your experiment does not beat the traditional M$ sympathizers' argument that OS-X (or Linux) is still not widely attacked, because it gives less bang for the effort.

Sorry your statement is true only if you're the only person around that has interest in that language. I am guessing you do not live in Japan. You are ignoring the other major community of language learners - foreigners - they have to learn the language of the place they are in. In that case, it is not all that you describe. Instead it will be a nice experience - as they can seek help from most people around them. It also helps them build social networks.
