I mean, this isn't the first time they haven't worked with other hardware or software -- why the hell can't they seem to get things right, every other hard drive company seems to have their shit together. Anyone know what's up with this?
For every OS I've ever used it on (Solaris, Linux, NT 4.0, Win2k), it's died in new and interesting ways. So when I hear "this kernel breaks the installer" or "this distro breaks the installer" or even "this day of the week breaks the installer" I'm never surprised.
One thing I like about normal shells: Short commands. "Go up, then go up, then go east" is an awful lot harder to type than "cd../../east" IMO. The whole shell looks way too wordy.
Ohwell, I guess this'll satisfy some niche user group...
The Simpsons has sucked since at least 1995. I wouldn't buy a thing advertised on it. Maybe this would be good afterall for those Cut-Cat haters in the audience.

It'd also be easy to remove the magnet. But am I violating the DMCA if I do this? Would I be doing the same if I showed others how to do this by means of a web page?
In order to truly erase a drive, for good, you need to wipe it dozens of times. There are data recovery centers that can recover files on drives that have been written to (i believe) 8 or 9 times after a file has been deleted or a disk has been formatted, so if you're not going to damage the surface of the drive, you're going to need to format like crazy, and fill it with junk every time.
I'm guessing, since it's a complete computer, the battery life on it is going to be pathetic. Probably a few hours, at best. It's not exactly something you can slip into your pocket, either. Also, I've heard the audio outs on it are very bad (this was in a review of it a few months back.)
This is far from the ultimate MP3 player. Something built around compactflash cards or IBM's microdrive would be much closer to that goal.
If you were using Solaris, you'd probably run into the same problems at some point. Software vendors write to specific releases of platforms; if the box says "requires Solaris 7 with patch xxxxxx, xxxxxy, and xxxxxz", you'd do well to make sure you had an identical system. If it requires RedHat 6.2, you'd better put it on RedHat 6.2, not 6.1 and not 7.0. This is just the way it has and will continue to work. Don't blame RedHat, and, if you must blame Oracle, realize that it's difficult to support moving targets.
I'm running 3.4-STABLE (yeah, I know, everyone and their dog keeps telling me to upgrade, but it works), and I basically had to rewrite ssh to get the fucking thing to compile, as it wouldn't compile from source.
Go to the ports directory, you say. That doesn't compile either. the SSH2 port doesn't compile either! Neither will OpenSSH (it warns about remote root exploits, really helpful), and the latest maintained official ssh1 version is 1.2.27.
I expect to find a lot of rootable old FreeBSD boxes out there.:(

No you aren't. The latest broadband sat systems are two-way. Read up on it.

Yeah, that one's cool, but there's this new game coming out called "Chess" that I hear is *really* awesome. Anyone got a chance to play it yet?!

Unfortunately, by the tenets of the DMCA, decrypting the DirecTV signal is illegal, at least for now.
