SpamSieve has been missing a lot of those lately for me. Getting better but still missing more than I'm used to. However, a new version was released this week which has as its first feature better detection of these. Woo hoo!
There's nothing more horrifying than trying to figure out what you wrote six months to a year ago.
Not to take a swipe at you but for some reason I have seen this phrase popping up over and over in the past two weeks (it's come up twice in a book I'm currently reading) and I think it is such crap. IMO, if that is the case then you're a lousy programmer or, more charitably, still have a ways to go with your craft. I actually get a big smile when I have to go through my old code because I get to see that those comments I wrote, those names I chose, that extra time I spent doing things right are actually paying off because I can get back up to speed and make the changes I need to fairly quickly.
Again, this isn't really directed at the parent. I just wanted to let off some steam on the topic. Back to Mr. Conway's book.
I'll feed the troll. Fire up mail.app. Go to Preferences->Viewing. Un-check "Display remote images in HTML messages". When an HTML message comes in and you want to see the message but not those question marks, press Command-Option-P. Now you have a plain-text view. Want to go back to HTML? Command-].
Unfortunately what is not so easy is understanding what you did six months ago.
If a programmer cannot go back into code he wrote six months ago and figure out what is going on, the blame rests with the programmer. The language is irrelevant.
I may have to do this soon to a neighbor who happens to be an old folks home- they take care of their landscaping except for this one tree, which is about to take out my gutters.
Why don't you just trim the tree where it's affecting your gutters? You get to trim what's over your property (as long as it doesn't kill the tree, I believe).
I would have been happy if companies had gotten back to me with a "Thanks but no thanks" response during my last round of interviews. Is this some 21st century rule that I am not aware of?: only respond to people you're going to hire. Of the several companies I recently interviewed with, the only one that got back in touch with me was the one that offered me a job. Not so much as a postcard, phone call, or email from the rest. Even the companies with which I folowed up.
There still is a big difference between wanting to cause harm to ALL Americans (indiscriminate) and only wanting to cause harm to abortion supporters (discriminate).
Terrorist gets on a bus in Egypt and orders all non-Americans off the bus. He then blows up the bus with just Americans on board. Discriminate enough for you?
There is no difference between the two and you're an ass for thinking there is.
Nah, wrong conspiracy theory, the real question is whether it was Cheney or Rove who ordered the hit to keep the truth from comming out.
Ooh, you're deliciously paranoid. I love it!

True enough. However...
Sniping does get you bargains precisely because people don't put in their max bids. Try putting a test bid on an item that is just higher than the current high bid but lower than your max. Chances are the former high bidder will come back and outbid you again. If I was to put my max in early against such a person, he'd just bid up until hitting his max or until I was outbid. However, sniping against such a person can save some bucks. I just put my max in at the last minute/second. For me, sniping is all about saving a few bucks.
The problem with states that have no income tax is that they usually have a high-sales tax...
In California we actually get an income tax and a sales tax. Maybe they'll take the windfall and lower the sales tax? Yeah, right. Sorry, I'm old enough to remember when the sales tax was only 6%.
You have 2,000MB of RAM so why are you complaining that something is using up 15% of it? It's the 21st century and apps are still getting bigger. Get used to it, it's not going to stop.
Ah, Americans and our infinite capacity to forget history. It's breathtaking, really.
If they dont want to cater to 100% of the population that's their choice.
So you're okay with restaurants that refuse to serve, say, asians?
There's plenty of evidence to support this.
Where?

Thomas is an activist in that he believes that when Congress declares war, President Bush becomes King Bush.
Sorry to be such a nit-picker but Congress never declared war on Iraq...or Afghanistan. People keep forgetting that.
You must be the kind of developer who gets paid to press buttons, rather than fiddle with something until it works.
Perhaps he is an applications developer who would rather spend time fiddling with his projects than the OS, hmm?
And what does 9/11 have anything to do with this?
9/11 is the reason there's a post on Slashdot about airline security.
The 9/11 hijackers all had valid boarding passes. What do fake boarding passes have to do with security?

You keep telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.

Well, sure they could get lucky and do it once, half a decade ago. But could they do it again?
Sure. They just have to wait for Americans to forget. We're great at forgetting.

Oh, that Fred. Try fred@yahoo-inc.com.
Name one product that doesn't say requires MS Windows?
Um, the iPod. Works fine on my Mac, last I checked. ;-)

Seriously. I'm making much more with AdBrite than I was with Google.

Is that extreme enough?
Positive mutations can lead to evolution but there is no proof of one happening.
I think AIDS immunity count as positive.
