don't you know that the ONLY way to end a SciFi movie is to blow something up, and then show the Hero and His Girl watching the explosion, their hair blowing back, that glimmer in their eyes...
never have i seen a movie where the "improvement" is basically to remove a half hour's worth of man-eating monsters with... well, with what they put in there. it sucked.
it's funny... looking back, i have no idea why i would ever want to learn something like VI. but i'm really glad i did. once you get used to it, it's just a reflex...
the main advantage is that you get to use all the keys that are easy to reach...essentially, you never really have to move your hand from the 'asdf' keys... this is faster and requires less effort.
that's a stupid statement. there are a lot of countries that hate us. This kind of violence is commonplace to them in their own countries. of course they are going to celebrate. everyday they lose children and family members to bombings in their countries while America gets fat and happy.
I'm not saying it's right...but there could be a dangerous backlash...
there are a lot of foreign nationals that work here - i DO NOT want to send them to concentration camps.
we need to find out who is responsible. i don't necessarily think it's a good idea to flatten the first country who pisses us off.
i mean, let's say 5 guys from the US blow up a few buildings in some country. would you want to get Nuked for it?
otherwise it's like we're saying that it's okay to bomb us. (yes, i know that we were hit by planes, but they work a lot like bombs when you run them into things)
what amazes me is that Hardcore terrorists are denouncing these actions.
i'm not saying we should go to war - i mean, this could be the actions of a small minority in some country. but do we want to wait for a 'second wave'?
it seems to me that a potential non-carbon base lifeform is sitting right in front of you.
really, tho... i think that one of the problems with searching for extra-terrestial lifeforms is that we only _look_ for things that _we_ can recognize as life. we look for the life under the rock, behind the rock, but never _in_ the rock (and it would never occur to us (unless we watched a lot of Star Treck;) ) that the rock itself could be alive.. just imagine all of the things that could be living on our OWN planet that we simply cannot identify as 'alive' because it's so different - basically, unidentifiable because it defies our definitions.
in order to create State of the Art(tm) code, i need State of the Art(tm) tools with fancy buttons and little blinking lights.
but wait...
Uh oh...
where did these State of the Art(tm) development tools come from?
conclusion: State of the Art(tm) programs do not exist, because they require State of the Art(tm) development tools. this is a paradox. please reboot now.
seriously, though, i think the issue comes down to TIME. Fancy development tools are supposed to save TIME. but you know, i use command line development tools, and hitting the (up) arrow takes about as long as it does to click on a button.
you know, forget all that. Fancy development tools suck. Command line Rules. yeah.
while there are a lot of complex "eastern" issues, it's important to note the "western" issues here:

so... who would america rather have in government: a bunch of communist "capitalists" bent or world domination OR some guy who meditates a lot and can float on water?
sometimes it's better to look at things they way they are than the way they should be. When you communicate, everything you do (physically) contains useful data. In a sense, typos simply replace the involuntary movements of the physical body that tell us so much.
I don't know about the joke, but Robin Williams is definitely not funny any more. I think he probably lost it around the time he did Aladdin...
A substantial portion of the American public thinks ketchup is a vegetable.
what, are you kidding?

wether or not it actually helps is irrelevant.
they bombed us, and we have to respond.

i think it would be cool to integrate Lisp into
your Java VM and then use Lisp to perform recursive functions and AI operations and such.
of course, you could use a pre-processor for that instead.
on second though, maybe that's a stupid idea.
nevermind.

if we gave them Permanent residence, then we'd have to actually pay them competitive wages and treat them like Human Beings.
The Industry(tm) doesn't want that.

foreigners are cheap.
period.
it has nothing to do with education. it has nothing to do with how much you work.
educated americans are too expensive. If i went back to school to get a Masters, i would be unemployable.

The only problem with that is the fact that from the beginning, the H1-B people where never staying.
all of those immigrants that make up the US actually became citizens.
they send their money to their home countries so that when they go back they can crush our industry.

Alexander the Great conquered the Medeterranian before he was 17.
that was an empire, not a big company.
if you think that the Chinese government can't hack, then you're kidding yourself...
maybe they're testing their bounds.
maybe they've realized that America will do nothing to them as long as we buy their sh*t.
when one government steals from, attacks (electronically), and denounces another country, isn't that an act of war?
uhm...
there were many successful and popular leaders in the United States who were "uneducated".
and, yes, i would hire a high school student to a big company if he/she were qualified.
if you don't like the options, run for president yourself.
